Chapter 177: Into the Jungle

After Melina and I found the group of workers constructing an adventurers’ guild building, we approached them to see if they needed help.

The person who would be the guild master was delegating the workers. A beastkin woman who had the features of a cat and had been waiting for years to return to her home and direct the adventurers guild there.

From what she told us, after Zagor took control of Kalusia, he destroyed the adventurers guild and ordered the workers to be executed, so they all had to run or act as if they weren’t part of it.

She said that, in the past, Kalusia was considered a place for high-ranking adventurers since a lot of contracts took place in the jungle, which was so dangerous that even Zagor avoided it.

Nonetheless, Melina and I were feeling pretty excited, so we decided to help them with the construction of the place with our magic.

It took us an entire day to finish since the building needed to have specific rooms and spaces that were mandatory for all adventurers’ guild to have. Still, once it was built, we had to wait a few more days for them to get their documents in order.

Melina and I were staying at the castle as the king’s special guests, but we decided to rent a room at the inn since we would be returning late at night, and we didn’t like to bother the servants that late.

Most of the battle-maids had gone back to their previous positions, except for Gina and Carli, who were tasked with staying with us as the king said that their connection with us was too strong to break now.

He had a point, to be honest. Gina was one of my best friends, even if she said that she was only my personal maid or whatever. So, if she had to go back to Kalusia forever, I would have been pretty bummed.

It was the same with Carli and Melina. They were both really close with each other, so having them separate would have been a bit cruel.

The day we returned to the adventurers guild, it was Melina, Vespera, Yoru, Gina, Carli, and me. A party of six was pretty common to see, but we still caught the attention of people around us when we entered.

Not many adventurers had made it to Kalusia yet, so the only people present were beastkins who used to be adventurers before Zagor took over.

Most of the contracts that were posted were for low-ranking adventurers, asking for help in building and moving carts with resources from town to town, which made sense since those were the jobs required the most at that time.

Still, we saw one that had been posted that asked for mithril ranks or higher.

The clerk told us that it was an old contract from before Zagor took over, and they weren’t sure if the monster that was asked to be hunted was still active.

Supposedly, a monster had been attacking the beastkin settlements in the jungle, but after the devil took control of Kalusia, no help was ever sent to them.

Zagor avoided the jungle, so while the beastkins that resided there were "safe" from him, they were still suffering from the lack of support from their kingdom.

Gina told me that the jungle beastkins were a bit different from the ones that lived in the cities in the sense that they were very autonomous and didn’t rely on importing goods from other towns.

They had good relationships with the other towns and even exported some of their products when they had good crop yields, but they hadn’t heard much about them after the incident.

Seeing that it was the highest-ranking contract posted at that moment, we took it and decided it was time to explore the rainforest.

Even if the monster wasn’t there anymore, we wanted to check the settlements there to see if they were still standing after all that time.

The contract described the monster as a giant gorilla with white hair and red eyes, and it had a little drawing that someone had made that portrayed the monster as vicious and scary.

Still, we couldn’t contain our excitement about visiting a new place and made our way right after grabbing the contract.

I had only been in the very first area of the jungle since my fight with the devil ended up taking us there, but I didn’t have the chance to explore it.

When we crossed the city gate that led to the rainforest, the two long trails on the ground that were generated by my fire arrows were still there, extending into the distance out of our sight’s reach.

The good thing was that we could follow the trail so we wouldn’t get lost. However, that wasn’t really a problem since we could just fly back.

We walked along the massive burnt mark on the ground for a while until we decided to take flight so we could get a better view of our surroundings.

The rainforest was filled to the brim with vegetation, making it difficult to see or sense anything with our search spell as it felt like there was a lot of "noise" in the area.

There were a lot of animals in the area, too. Monkeys, frogs, and snakes were the most common ones that we saw, but Gina told us that there were wild tigers that prowled the jungle and told us to be careful.

We knew that she was being cautious since an ordinary tiger wouldn’t really be able to get close to us with our magic level, but she explained that the tigers were smart and would attack their prey when they least expected it.

That night, we decided to camp in the middle of the jungle and built a room with earth magic right in between a few trees.

Vespera didn’t feel like sleeping that night, so she stood outside of our little cabin, keeping watch.

The following morning, I was met with the corpses of two large crocodiles that Vespera had hunted down during the night.

She explained that she felt something strange coming from the river and found the two massive animals there, so she killed them and brought them here.

I didn’t think they could be considered beasts since they looked like oversized alligators, but I inspected them to be sure.

<Giant Caiman

Rank B

Possesses scales as tough as rocks.

Tender white meat, non-poisonous.>

"Huh? We can eat these..." I said after inspecting the two massive animals.
