Chapter 160: Kalusia’s Last Stand

It had been a few weeks since we took the factory, and the three groups of the army had all reached a point where the capital’s walls were visible in the distance.

We were only a day away from the final siege, which would determine the fate of not only the Kalusia Kingdom and all of its citizens but the future of the entire continent.

Losing this battle would make it a hundred times easier for Zagor to conquer all of the nations in the continent without much resistance, so this was our last chance to end it for good.

On the day before, I sent a voice message to Melina, telling her that we were close to ending the war and about our plans the next day.

Her response message came back almost immediately after I sent it.

"Please be careful, okay? I’ll be waiting for you... Please come back safely..." the message said.

I could hear her voice laced with uncertainty and fear, but that only made me want to put an end to everything even quicker.

That night, I could barely sleep as the anxiety was eating me alive, so I cuddled with my companions and took a nap, feeling like the calm before the storm was slowly coming to an end.

__________

The following morning, the army started their advance towards the capital walls, which could be seen full of guards and soldiers protecting it from the top.

The knights’ orders were flying to intercept the giant crossbows with the Dawn’s Defenders, while the foot army would take on the lesser demons stationed outside their walls.

When the first arrow was shot from the wall, Harvey deflected it in the air by coating his sword with wind magic and quickly flew towards the gate with his group, landing on top of one of the crossbows and destroying it wholly.

The soldiers were all carrying golden pearls with them to use against the lesser demons, but they still had orders to protect their own lives at any cost, so if it seemed impossible to heal one, they were allowed to kill them.

It wasn’t my favorite solution, but it was the most logical one, and I had already come to terms with the fact that I couldn’t save everyone in a war.

As the knights landed atop the wall and started their assault on their defenses, the foot army was battling the lesser demons at the gate, giving my companions and me the perfect opportunity to fly by and make our way to the castle.

However, as we flew above the streets of the capital, we noticed a large number of soldiers were stationed in different parts of the city, with a few lesser demons accompanying them.

"Zagor isn’t sending all of the soldiers to the frontline..." I said to my companions.

They seemed to be protecting specific landmarks of the city, as I spotted a building that looked similar to the factory in the savannah that was wholly surrounded by lesser demons. However, the battle-maids were tasked with capturing that building, so we kept moving.

The worst part was that all of the enslaved beastkins were still working non-stop, which made me think that Zagor was keeping them on the streets to use as a diversion when our army broke inside.

At that moment, I sent a voice message to the empress and Harvey, telling them of the enemy forces inside the wall so they could prioritize them when they were done with their first task.

We kept flying towards the castle, and when we arrived, we noticed the courtyard had blood splattered all around the area, and a large demon stood tall behind the gate.

’Another greater demon...’ I thought, recognizing his physique as it was similar to the greater demon at the factory.

They had a few different features, like their horns were unlike the previous one, and the red hue of their body was slightly darker. However, their energy felt the same, so I had no doubt that it was a greater demon.

After we defeated the first one, I decided to place them on the same power level as an S-ranked monster. It was a rank that could differ significantly between monsters, but I thought it was the perfect scale for the demons.

[I got it.] Yoru said with telepathy.

[Are you sure?] I asked, knowing that Yoru wouldn’t pick a fight he couldn’t win as his animal instincts usually restricted him from doing so.

My companion, who was using his "airwalk" skill to stand in the air beside me, nodded with confidence and crashed down on the courtyard to face the greater demon.

Meanwhile, Vespera and I flew even faster until we reached the massive double doors of the entrance and kicked it open with a flaming kick, blowing the door forcefully inside.

Vespera and I found ourselves in the middle of a long hall, where I expected to be swarmed by enemy soldiers or lesser demons, but nobody came out to check on the commotion we caused.

The end of the hall was too dark for me to see, even when it was daytime outside, but Vespera could clearly envision the figure that was seated at the top of a throne located at the back of the dark hall.

Before I could walk toward the darkness, my companion placed her hand on my shoulder and shared her vision with me, allowing me to discern the figure at the back that was holding back his demonic energy.

Suddenly, as if he realized that we had spotted him, the figure on the throne released his unsettling and powerful aura, making Vespera and I hesitate for a brief moment as fear overtook our bodies.

We heard a raspy and deep laugh coming from the darkness that slowly dissipated, allowing the sunlight to enter from the hall’s windows and giving us a clearer view of the devil.

"So, the beastkin killers finally made it..." he said, slowly rising up from the throne.

Zagor looked much more prominent in size than Armaros, and his aura felt a lot more imposing and unsettling.

Armaros had a body that seemed to be composed of shadows, while Zagor’s body looked more like a real devil. He had long, strong arms, dark red skin, black horns with spikes, and held a giant morning star weapon in his hand.

’Focus... This is for all the beastkin, the Terra Titan, Acalan, and Melina...’
