Chapter 42: Buying Vegetable

Meanwhile, Feng Xiyan wrote down Bai Hanyun’s instructions. When he was done, he called out, "Someone, come."

A soldier soon entered. Clasping his fists, he asked, "Great General, what are your orders?"

Feng Xiyan handed him the paper and instructed, "Give this to the head chef. Tell him to prepare meals according to these instructions."

"Yes, Great General." The soldier accepted the note and left.

Afterward, Feng Xiyan resumed reading the reports sent by his shadow guards. As he read, his expression turned gloomy.

While Feng Xiyan was working, Bai Hanyun drove to a nearby village.

Living in the suburbs of Fu Cheng Town, she knew that over a dozen villages surrounded the area.

Each village had its own specialty. Some produced vegetables all year-round, others raised livestock and fish, while some focused on making clothes, shoes, and other daily essentials.

Since she had instructed Feng Xiyan to improve the soldiers’ meals, Bai Hanyun needed a steady supply of grains, vegetables, and meat. Therefore, she decided to visit the villages to see if she could buy these supplies from them.

Arriving at the nearest village, she saw a group of elderly people sitting under a banyan tree, drinking tea and chatting.

Parking her car by the roadside, she walked over with a friendly smile. "Hello, Uncles and Aunties."

The elderly had already noticed her when she parked her car. One of the aunties, smiling at her, asked, "Young lady, do you need something?"

Bai Hanyun nodded and explained, "Aunty, I heard I can buy vegetables from this village. Do you know who I should talk to?"

Hearing that she came to do business, the aunt beamed and replied, "Oh, so you are here to buy vegetables!"

"Young Lady, you can buy from us. Everyone in this village has their own vegetable field. Just take a look around. If you see something you like, knock on the door and talk to the owner."

Hearing this, Bai Hanyun said, "Thank you, Auntie."

After thanking her, she walked back to her car and drove into the village.

Seeing this, another auntie asked, "Why didn’t you sell your vegetables to her?"

The first auntie chuckled and replied, "Didn’t you see what she was wearing? Cheap clothes and a cheap car. How many vegetables could she possibly want to buy? I won’t waste my time earning just a few yuan."

Hearing her arrogant words, the other aunties and uncles could only shake their heads.

Unaware that she had been looked down on, Bai Hanyun slowly drove around the village.

After more than twenty minutes, she finally saw a man in his twenties working in a vegetable field alongside a woman in her fifties.

Parking her car by the roadside, Bai Hanyun walked up to them. Standing at the edge of the field, she called out, "Excuse me, Brother. Are you the owner of this vegetable field?"

The man stopped working and turned to look at her. Seeing that the person speaking was a young woman, he brushed the dirt off his hands and replied, "Yes."

Upon hearing his response, Bai Hanyun asked, "Do you sell these winter melons?"

The man’s interest was piqued by her question. He studied her for a moment and replied, "Yes."

"I want to buy all of them," Bai Hanyun said. "Can we discuss the price?"

The man was surprised and said, "Miss, there are at least several tons of winter melons here. Are you sure you want them all?"

Bai Hanyun nodded and answered without hesitation, "Yes."

Seeing that she was serious, the man spoke briefly with the middle-aged woman, then walked toward Bai Hanyun.

Standing a few steps in front of her, he said, "Since you want to buy them all, I will give you a wholesale price—three yuan per kilogram."

The price was on the higher side, but she had money, and the farmer’s life was not easy. After a moment of thought, Bai Hanyun said, "Alright. Please weigh them all."

The man’s eyes flickered with surprise that she didn’t even negotiate the price. Coming back to his senses, he said, "It will take a while to weigh everything. Would you like to wait in the resting hut?"

Bai Hanyun shook her head. "Thank you for your invitation, but I will wait in my car."

"Alright."

The man then went to speak to the middle-aged woman again and left to call for help. Soon, a dozen villagers came to help him harvest and weigh the winter melons.

An hour later, the man returned and explained, "Miss, we have finished weighing them. It’s 48 tons in total, worth 144,000 yuan."

Bai Hanyun nodded and thought, ’Based on the standard portion of a 5 cm thick slice per serving, these winter melons can feed around 68,000 people.’

’If made into soup, they will barely be enough for one meal for Feng Xiyan’s troops. It seems that I need to buy vegetables every day to provide the soldiers with enough vitamins.’

With that in mind, she asked, "Do you accept payment via WeChat?"

The man nodded, took out his phone, and opened WeChat to show her his QR code.

Bai Hanyun scanned it and transferred 44,000 yuan. "I will pay the rest after you deliver the winter melons to this address."

The man checked the address she sent to his WeChat and nodded. "No problem. I will arrange delivery right away."

After the payment was settled, Bai Hanyun asked, "Brother, are winter melons the only thing for sale in this village?"

The man shook his head and explained, "No. Not all villagers grow winter melons like my family. Some grow other summer vegetables, like water spinach, Chinese cabbage, long beans, bok choy, and more."

Seeing her interest, he offered, "Miss, if you want to buy more, I can help you speak with the other villagers."

Bai Hanyun’s eyes lit up at his words. "Thank you, Brother. If you can help me arrange daily vegetable deliveries, I will pay you extra for your help."

Hearing this, the man’s mind worked quickly.
