Chapter 188: A Deliberate Act

As soon as the car drove off Brooke let out a relieved sigh, she sunk her back into the passenger seat, inhaling Thane’s cologne. "Don’t you think you were too harsh back there? It was my fault for not handling myself better back then." She said starting off the conversation.

Thane shook his head, "Did you expect me to let him talk down about you? That man should know by now the sort of people to not piss off."

"Still, he helped us tonight. I was with Damien earlier and if he had seen you, I can’t begin to imagine what he’d think of me then." She huffed, folding her arms.

Thane stole a glance at her, "Why would you care what he thinks?"

Mindlessly, Brooke responded, "He’s voted actor of the year, of course his opinion of me matters." she nestled her head into the car seat, a sense of drowsiness overcoming her.

Thane scoffed, "It mattered enough that you stayed back extra hours with him?"

Brooke sprang up from her seat, the tiredness in her eyes disappeared in an instant. She turned to Thane who had his eyes on the road, but his features contorted into a deep frown.

"It wasn’t like that. I had no idea he was staying back after filming." Brooke explained.

Thane retorted sharply. "You could’ve called me, I would’ve dropped everything and gone to meet you. Instead, I have to see my wife and some man emerge out a building alone at night."

Brooke furrowed her brows, what exactly was he trying to say to her? The anger from Thane’s insinuation nearly made her miss his first retort.

"What do you mean? I did call you-"

Thane cut her off by pulling his phone from his side and placing it on her lap. "You can check for yourself, I would’ve known if you placed a call to me."

Alternating her gaze from him and his phone, she scanned her thumb on the screen, unlocking his phone, then tapped on the call icon. After scrolling for about three minutes she furled her lips into a frown.

"Mr Grayson, I...I...don’t know how to explain this," Brooke panicked, her jittery fingers still scrolling through the phone. "But I swear I did call you." She defended, her eyes watery from the possible misunderstanding.

Blinking twice, she remembered, "Gilbert answered and he said you were in a meeting..." she turned to Thane but he seemed unfazed by what she was saying.

Wiping her tears she went on, "I swear I’m not making this up-" her words fell to the blaring horns behind them when Thane made a sudden turn and pulled over at a random spot.

"Mr-"

Thane reached inside his jacket and pulled out a black handkerchief, gently he dabbed the tears away from her eyes. "Brooke, I’m sorry for lashing out, my head wasn’t in the right place."

Brooke took his hands in hers and looked Thane in the eye, "Please believe me, I didn’t cheat you. I had no idea Damien was there when I woke up, and I did call, Gilbert even answered, I don’t know why..." she cut herself off by letting more tears fall from her eyes.

"I know, and I trust you." Thane replied, giving her hand a tight squeeze, in a calm tone he said to her ever so gently, "I was just pissed off that I wasn’t able to see you the entire day." he explained.

Brooke sniffled, "I’m sorry. I wasn’t getting anything right today and I just felt so frustrated that I kept holding everyone back. And I knew you were busy today with work and...I just didn’t know when that stress caught up to me, I should’ve been more attentive."

Thane’s thumb gently rubbed the back of Brooke’s hand, "I know it’s hard for you to adjust, and I want you to know that you can depend on me, I am never too busy when it comes to you."

Hearing those words sounded like a breath of fresh air to Brooke. Knowing her ex husband, he would’ve nitpicked at her for calling and berate her for it.

But Thane was different, miles different from Ethan.

After she had calmed down, Thane asked, "Could I see your phone for a moment?"

Brooke nodded and handed it over, Thane leaned in close so she could see what he was doing. Scrolling through the missed calls from him, he finally landed on the call that Brooke had placed to him.

He checked the time, then opened his schedule on his phone. Brooke followed his eyes and immediately understood what was going on.

"The time I called you were in a meeting." She observed.

"Yes. I had Gilbert take my phone in case you called. From the look of things, it seems I was a fool for doing so."

Brooke pinched her chin, "I don’t understand, why did he tell you I called? We even spoke about getting a driver to pick me up."

To herself she thought, ’I want to say he forgot, but then he wouldn’t have deleted the call record.’

Thane handed her phone back, Brooke noticed the unfazed look he had on and could not help but ask, "Did you anticipate this?"

"Somewhat."

Brooke stared at the record on her phone, then looked up at him, "You mean you were suspicious of Gilbert? Why?"

Thane shook his head, "I was suspicious of someone back home, I just wasn’t sure of who that person could be."

"What about now?" She asked, wiping the corners of her eyes, "Do you think it’s him?"

Starting the car up, Thane gave a cryptic response, "Whose to say there’s only one suspect?"

Brooke’s curiosity sparked from his words, true she found what Gilbert did odd, moreso because it was clearly deliberate. But what exactly could’ve been his end goal? And what’s more, who else could her husband have in mind that would want to sabotage her relationship with him?

There weren’t that many people around them to begin with, the only other person as close as Gilbert was to them had to be...

Sharply Brooke turned her head to Thane and blurted out, "Do you mean Hannah?!"
