Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 141: A Change In Destination
Chapter 141: A Change In Destination
Brooke could barely believe so much had happened since she was away.
"You’re saying, that I have shares in Luther’s business? And that I’m also an online presence actively dragging Cassie through the mud for being fake?" She asked for clarity.
Hannah nodded, "And that’s just the starting point. Master Grayson had us hold off on making any other move until you were back in the country."
Brooke could see what Hannah was implying but decided not to focus on that. "And how about Sadie? I haven’t had time to call her since we arrived."
"Sadie’s in a tuff place right now." she answered, "Master Grayson had me run a background check on her brother and I found out he’s been involved in some shady business."
A gasp escaped Brooke’s lips, "What?"
"Of course, it’s nothing too big, his basic clientele don’t go past your average drug peddlers and mobsters. However, he has a huge debt on his head, and angry people seeking him out." she revealed.
Brooke pinched her chin, "I’m guessing he came back because he wanted money from her."
She nodded, getting up from her squat position, "Lots of it. He also tried to blackmail her and the owner of the production company you’re filming under."
"Has she called the police? The problem should be solved if he’s locked up." Brooke asserted, but the unsettled look on Hannah’s face said it all.
Brooke pinched her temples and swayed her head from side to side. "She won’t do it, will she?"
"Lucas and I were in the middle of trying to convince her when the whole incident with the young master’s health sprung up." She replied.
Brooke could understand the confliction Sadie was feeling, when Ethan had started his abusive behavior, she decided to stick around and give him a chance. But she knew just how sadly the situation would always end up.
She picked up her phone. "I’m going to call her and try to explain things-" Brooke was saying, only to get cut off by her phone ringing.
She checked who it was to see that it was Scott calling.
Her features dulled. She placed her phone on silent and dropped it on her laps.
"Hannah," she called out.
"Yes, Mrs Grayson?"
"From what you told me, you were the one who gathered all that information, weren’t you?" She asked.
Hannah raised her brows, "I never told you that."
"But I could guess, you wouldn’t have explained everything in such detail if you didn’t have a clue on what was going on. Infact," she said, drawing the dots. "It makes sense why Mr Grayson hired you to stay close to me. You’re not my ordinary maid, that’s why you stay with us and not at the help’s quarters."
Hannah bit her lip, ’Should I really be admitting this? I don’t know if master Grayson wanted her to know this.’ After all, she was meant to discreetly watch over Brooke, and help keep her out of harm’s way.
Defeated, she sighed. "Yes, I wasn’t hired to be just your help, and yes, I did most of the information gathering."
Brooke who had just been speculating was stunned genuinely to hear her doubts get confirmed. "What else has he had you look into?"
"Mrs Grayson-"
"Please, Hannah. Just tell me the truth." Brooke pleaded.
Hannah swallowed a bitter pill and admitted, "I was the one assigned to hack into your sister’s phone. But I haven’t looked inside of it yet, Mr Grayson reserved that specially for you."
Brooke widened her eyes, she did recall Thane telling her something about having Cassie’s phone, but she always figured he tendered the phone to professionals to break into it.
Looking at Hannah she couldn’t help but be amazed. "That’s incredible that you can do that! And all on your own too!"
"Wait, you’re not angry at me? I’m prying into your family’s business." Hannah asked.
Brooke shook her head, "Those people are not my family, Hannah, so I don’t mind you doing that. Infact..." she picked up her phone and passed it to Hannah.
"Could you help me run a background check on someone?" She asked.
Hannah raised a brow, "You want me to track someone? Who?"
Brooke inhaled slowly then exhaled sharply, a fierce look of determination in her eyes. "My uncle."
Jen’s feet sent her flying across the hospital’s lobby, earning stares and gawking from all angles. Her heart beat was louder than the crying coming from the near distant scene.
At the sight of her, a young girl no older than fifteen ran over and hugged her tightly, sobbing into her stomach.
Jen patted the back of her head, "Chyna-"
"What’s going to happen to my sister?" Chyna cried out.
Jen peered through the glass at the intensive care unit, and gasped at the heavily bandaged woman laid out on the bed.
"She’ll be okay-" she was saying, only for Avery’s boyfriend to step forward. He pulled Chyna away from Jen’s grip and asked her outside for a talk.
The rest of the family were too devastated to say anything and just watched the two leave towards the elevator.
As soon as the elevator doors came together, Oliver demanded, "Who did that to her?"
Jen wiped the tears from her eyes with her oversized sleeves, "I don’t know-"
"Don’t know?! You were the one who called for help! That means you must’ve been on the phone with her when it happened." He raised his voice, his fists balled tightly.
She looked to the ceiling, trying not to cry, "I-I don’t know! W-We were just talking and then I heard...I heard this loud noise-"
"Why don’t I believe that?! You’re telling me that what happened was some kind of accident?!" he slammed his fists against the elevator walls, cornering Jen.
She jolted in fear from his close proximity, she looked at his face, and clenched her eyelids shut.
Oliver’s face was reddened from not just the anger but from crying his eyes out the entire time.
He had sensed something had been bothering Avery for a while and tried to give her space to open up to him. He had even planned a little get away weekend trip. Little did he expect to get the call that she was hospitalized.
Seeing he was scaring her, he backed away. On cue, the elevator door parted, and people flooded the elevator.
Seizing the opportunity, Jen dashed out and quickly tried to call for a cab. But her jittery fingers could barely hold the phone, causing it to fall to the ground.
"Shit!" She cursed, lowering herself into a squat.
She tried picking up her phone, but her sweaty hands wouldn’t latch on.
"Hey Miss, are you okay?" A passerby asked, he reached down to help her pick up her phone, but noticed the red bruise peeking out of her black sleeve.
Following his gaze, Jen swiftly covered the wound, she wiped her palms on her black knee length skirt and then swiped the phone.
"Miss! Miss!" He called after her, but she ignored him and briskly marched over to the entrance.
On her way out, she took a vacant cab outside, "Where to-"
"The nearest subway!" Jen instructed him, searching her pockets for her credit card.
However, on her way, her phone rang. She turned pale when she looked at the caller ID, and saw that it was her boss, Ethan calling.
At first, she disconnected the call, but after a while Ethan kept calling, forcing her to try and switch off her phone.
"What’s this?" She gulped at the message from him that popped up on her phone. She reluctantly tapped on it, only to gasp and drop her phone.
"Miss, are you doing okay back there?" The cab driver asked, stealing glances at her through the rear view mirror.
Jen pushed her hair back, the sweat keeping her strands in place. She reached for her phone, which had the screen facing upward, displaying a picture of her family’s house.
A recent picture, which looked to have been taken barely half an hour ago.
She picked up her phone and read the text that followed, "Answer."
On cue, the phone rang and this time she answered. Placing it to her ear, she tried to speak, but Ethan cut her off strictly.
"Come over to the address I just sent, and you’d better come alone." He said, then ended the call.
Confirming what he said, he shared his location, which was located at the heart of the city.
"Miss?" The cab driver called out to her, when she buried her face in her palms and began to cry.
He reached for his phone, and dialed the number for the police. "Miss, is there something wrong? You can tell me." He said, reading the situation.
The image of Avery’s condition and the despair of her entire family, jolted Jen into sitting up. She hurriedly wiped the tears from her eyes.
"No, nothing’s wrong." Jen said, straightening her back.
"But miss, just now you-"
"T-Turn the cab around." She said, her voice pained and reluctant. "My destination’s changed."
