Chapter 124: Just A Servant

Before leaving, Maverick made a statement that left Brooke feeling antsy.

"Did you know, that your husband has already given his heart to someone?" He asked all of a sudden, before leaving.

Brooke replied calmly, "I know." She answered, referring to the childhood friend Rachelle had told her about.

Judging by her dampened demeanor, Maverick could guess that she didn’t in fact know.

"He’s not the sort of man to do something he doesn’t mean. Everything he does has a well thought out motive behind it." He explained, rolling his sleeves up.

"What is it you’re trying to tell me?" She asked, aware that he was getting at something.

Was he talking about the reason they got married?

If it was then she was well aware it was because he wanted to get back at Ethan.

’But now that I think of it, I’m not sure what exactly it was Ethan did to him.’ she realized, cracking her head over the situation.

"My cousin doesn’t change, he’s been the same ever since childhood. And that means his tastes and preferences don’t change either. So let me give you a piece of advice." He offered, setting Brooke on edge.

He doesn’t change?

What was Maverick even trying to spell out?

In a flippant tone he said, "Don’t expect more than what you’ve been promised by him. Unless, you want to end up hurt in the end."

Before Brooke could ask him to explain further he left to the hospital, leaving her to her thoughts.

To distract herself, she picked up her phone and fortunately, Hannah was calling.

"Miss Brooke- I mean, Mrs Grayson! I’ve been trying to call you, but no one’s been answering." Hannah sighed into the phone.

Brooke’s chest tightened, she had missed hearing the voice of someone around.

"I’ve missed you Hannah." She said, switching conversation.

Hannah replied, "As have I, Miss Brooke."

Brooke gasped and covered her mouth, "Hannah, Mr Grayson’s condition-"

"I know, I heard the whole thing this morning." Hannah cut her off, so she wouldn’t have to say it out loud.

"What? How did you find out?" Brooke questioned, wondering how fast the news has traveled over there.

Hannah laughed nervously, "Oh, from Gilbert. He has sources over there who keep him updated. Don’t worry, he’s on the next flight over to pick you both up."

"Really?" Brooke’s pitch went high.

"Yes! I know how suffocating that house can be, so please, take care of yourself while you’re over there. And don’t do anything to piss off the old man." Hannah advised, all though it was already too late for that.

"Thank you for the advice." Brooke started off, "But there’s something I want to ask, about his health."

Hannah’s breathing tensed. "We shouldn’t discuss this over the phone-"

"Is he going to...die?" She whispered the last part with her eyes closed and her hand clenched into a tight fist.

For a second the call went dead, a nervous line of sweat formed across her forehead, and traced it’s way to her chin. Brooke wiped away the moist from her face, as she braced herself for what Hannah would say.

Hannah sighed, "Mrs Grayson-"

Brooke went silent, holding back the tears that welled up in her eyes.

"You’re thinking too far!" Hannah announced in a lively tone, throwing Brooke off her game.

"What? What do you mean?"

Hannah laughed, "I admit that the situation is dire, but it’s not life or death. Master Grayson has been having this treatment for two decades now, and his body has been having a great response to it."

A wave of relief washed over her, "Is that true?"

"Of course it is! He’s recovered greatly since he was a child. It’s just that variables such as travelling long distances or a change in weather sometimes triggers his condition. But it isn’t anything too life threatening." She went on to say, reassuring Brooke.

A broad grin painted Brooke’s face. "Thank goodness! I’m so glad that it wasn’t as serious as I thought it would be." She huffed, relaxing her shoulders.

Changing the topic, Hannah said, "The moment you’re both back, I’ll fill you in on everything’s that’s been happening with Cassie Crane, that pretentious wench."

Brooke nodded, "I’ll be looking forward to it." She said, her heart filled with hope that everything would be fine.

Thane wasn’t in danger.

And they would be leaving this place soon.

Cassie was having some trouble.

And filming would begin in a month.

Everything was going well in her life.... ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

After they talked for a while, a maid came in to tell Brooke that she was summoned.

"Hannah I’ll speak to you later. Hopefully before we take off."

"Alright, talk to you soon." Hannah said, then ended the call.

She stared at the phone in her hand, "Forgive me, Mrs Grayson, I had no intention of lying to you." she whimpered, staring at Thane’s unconscious body through the hospital glass.

She had arrived with Gilbert barely an hour ago and immediately came to see her boss.

"It’s not your fault." Gilbert rested his hand on her shoulder, "You just don’t want her to worry."

"She’ll hate me for lying. It’s like we don’t trust her enough with the truth. I just want her to know what her husband is going through. What if he di-" Hannah was saying, until Matthew arrived, cutting her off.

"Hannah." He called out to her.

Hearing his voice she balled her fists, he was the last person she wanted to see.

Matthew approached her, "You should’ve called, I would’ve picked you up myself."

In a prickly tone she retorted. "Why would you? After all, I’m just a servant unworthy of looking at you isn’t that right?"

Matthew opened and closed his mouth, frustrated. He narrowed his gaze at Gilbert’s hand on her shoulder and frowned.

"Please, can we talk?"

Hannah turned around and sent him a harsh glare, folding her arms she tightly replied, "I have nothing to speak to you about. And if you cared about anyone other than yourself, you’d know that this is neither the time or the place for your bullshit." She spat out, making it clear that she wanted nothing to do with him.

In a quieter tone she went on. "It was kind of you to alert us that our boss is in danger, but don’t expect me to honour that favor. At least," she sighed.

"Not in the way you’d expect me to. Never again."
