Chapter 31: A Wall Of Bodies

"Seein’ as you ’ave all the answers," started Luca with a smile. I was still watching the world through Max’s eyes, and I couldn’t help but smirk at the look on his face. A strand of his brown hair dipped into his eye, and it took everything in me not to reach up and put it back in its place. "What do we’s do now?"

Everyone could hear the pounding on the doors of the detachment as the zombies trapped inside tried to get out. One of the windows to the side had been broken, and a cut up arm stretched forward, its black nails trying to grab onto anything it could.

We were lucky that they were just the dumb zombies; at least they seemed to be easier to kill than the mutated ones. Still, both were completely capable of killing us, so it might not be all that good.

"I told you not to come here," replied Alicia, crossing her arms over her chest as she stared Luca down. "But I was outvoted, remember?"

Luca nodded his head, the smile on his face never leaving. "So, what you are saying is that you didn’t see this comin’."

"Fuck this," snarled Dimitri, clearly having run out of patience. "Luca, open the door."

His gun already out and leveled, Dimitri stood at the bottom of the five steps leading up to the police station. With a shrug of his shoulders, Ronan sauntered up beside him, not bothering to rush in the least. Taking out his sidearm, he copied Dimitri’s stance and waited.

Luca studied the two of them before opening the door on the left, forcing the zombies to come out in a more orderly manner. As soon as the first one poked its head out of the door, Dimitri fired hitting it right between the eyes.

It went down hard, only to be trampled by the zombies pushing from behind. The second zombie that managed to break free from the crowd was met with the same fate as I saw Ronan’s eyes turn to Dimitri. "Yous gonna run outta bullet before we’s even gonna get through the front door."

Dimitri chuckled as he continued to fire round after round into the zombies. "Hasna ’appened once since I picked up my little Kitten. She’s my good luck charm."

"Hardly," interjected Alicia. "I assume you were vaccinated when they came out in September and October?"

"Of course," nodded René, his eyes never leaving Alicia’s face. The love he had for her was so clear on his face that even Max could see it.

"Then you have the metal attribute," answered the woman as bullets continued to ring out. There was a thud and shuffle coming from behind me, and I quickly realized that the loud sound of gunfire had attracted some of the other zombies from around the station.

Max looked over his shoulder, me still in his arms as I clutched Teddy to my chest, and it was easy to see the almost hundred walking dead coming toward us.

Thud, thud, drag.

Thud, thud, drag.

"Fuck, an’ I’s be thinkin’ that Ro moved slowly," chuckled Luca as he fired the first shot toward the coming zombies.

Like those in the station, the second one fell; there were two more ready to take its place.

"Tri might have unlimited bullets, but you don’t, Luca. Be smart. We need to leave here before there are so many zombies that we are overwhelmed by numbers alone," snapped Alicia, and I couldn’t help but smile at the snarl on Dimitri’s face.

"Yous an’ I aren’ close enough for yous to be callin’ me Tri," replied Dimitri, never turning around to look at the woman. His focus was completely on the zombies still in police uniforms as they tried their best to crawl over the bodies of their fallen comrades to get to the fresh flesh.

My heart broke for him, even if he never wavered. It couldn’t be easy killing someone that you went to BBQs with or considered friends.

"There be more bullets in the station," shrugged Luca. "Donna you be worryin’ your little ’ead over my bullets."

One of the randoms that the group had picked up at the mall fell to the ground, her face lifted to the sky as she wailed out her fear and frustration. "Dear God, please... please. No more zombies. I am willing to give you anything and everything to never have to see another zombie again."

Just as I wondered if praying to God counted as a wish, the female voice inside of my head rang out. "Deal accepted."

Suddenly, the woman was wailing for a completely different reason than out of pure frustration. I watched through Max’s eyes as her eyes started to cry blood before they took on a milky white film over them that I knew well. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Well, I guess, in a way, she got her wish. She would no longer see another zombie as long as she lived.

It turned out to be only a matter of seconds before one of the dumb zombies managed to get past Luca and descended on the woman, ripping a hole in her neck. Her cries turned to nothing more than gurgles as I watched air bubbles starting to appear on her throat as she struggled to take a breath.

Max covered my eyes with his hand as he continued to stare at the scene in front of us. "Little girls donna need to be seein’ that," he murmured, his cheek resting on my head as Désiré fired two shots.

The first one put the woman out of her misery, while the second one took care of the zombie.

Time seemed to stand still as the sound of the zombies coming toward us was drowned out by gunfire from six of the guys.

"I’m older than I look," I answered when my head finally cleared enough to understand what Max had said. "And I’m blind; I can’t see a single thing anyway."

Max kissed the top of my head before turning his attention back to Dimitri. There were no longer zombies trying to get out of the station, but there was now a wall of dead bodies preventing us from getting inside the building.
