Chapter 69: A hug filled with love - Part 1

"Hello, Kyrell. It’s me, Axel."

When Kyrell heard the familiar voice, his eyes shook and he subconsciously glanced at Xavier, who was chatting with Amy and Isaac.

Perhaps sensing a gaze on them, Isaac turned towards Kyrell and quirked his brows questioningly.

But Kyrell shook his head and averted his gaze, moving away from everyone. He looked for a secluded place, hurrying away from his friends before they sensed something amiss and followed him.

"Did you see Kyrell’s expression just now? Why did he look so stunned?" Isaac mused, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.

Unlike Isaac, Xavier and Amy hadn’t noticed Kyrell’s quick change in expression. So, they didn’t know what was happening.

"Perhaps, he is worried about Miss Lawrence," Xavier pondered, his face losing all emotions except worry. "Give him some time. He’ll come around eventually."

Isaac wasn’t convinced. But he didn’t dwell more into the matter and returned to their conversation.

"Why didn’t you tell me?" Amy smacked Xavier’s upper arm, annoyed to have been kept in the dark. Kyrell liking Sienna was a huge matter, something to rejoice about. Why did they hide such exciting information from her?

As far as she could recall, Kyrell had never been in a relationship, not after she got acquainted with him after joining the Cheetah Corps. The revelation was like a bombshell for her.

"No wonder he didn’t date anyone in the past," Amy mumbled, applauding the man’s unwavering affection and determination.

If it were anyone else, they’d have given up by now. What was the chance anything happening between Sienna and him?

Close to zero.

"I can’t believe he hid such a huge matter from us." Amy had her doubts when she saw how Kyrell coaxed Sienna to eat her lunch when she was not in the mood. The man was extremely attentive to her, a first as far as Amy could remember.

After years of being friends with Kyrell, Amy knew that the man wasn’t that perceptive towards the other gender. He was only acute when it mattered to him. He usually stayed to himself, not bothered by anything. Unless his friends were in danger, he didn’t intervene in their lives as well.

But now, not only did he cajole Sienna to eat her food, but he even stood outside, waiting for the doctor to treat her quickly and help her gain consciousness. His actions only confirmed that he had a thing for Sienna and it was quite intense.

"How long?" Amy was intrigued. She wanted to know everything, from when his feelings started to what he intended to do now that he was close to her.

"It’s been three years now. It all started at the Global Innovation Summit at Sacramento three years ago."

"Ohh, I remember." Amy’s eyes widened, recalling the event from the past. "Wasn’t it the first time we were contracted by the management to provide security at the venue?"

Xavier nodded.

"Wow. What does he intend to do now?" Amy’s eyes sparkled as she clasped her fingers as if she was making a wish.

"I have no idea, to be honest," Xavier sighed, his shoulders drooping slightly. "I was rooting for them, wishing sparks would emerge between them. But after what happened today, I’m not quite sure if anything will happen between them."

"I agree. If Miss Lawrence’s father hadn’t left a condition for her to marry within two weeks, maybe Kyrell could have used his time to leave a good impression on her. Perhaps, she would start liking him as well. But now..."

"Who says nothing can happen between them now?" Amy asked suddenly, gaining the two men’s baffled gazes.

"What do you mean?" Isaac cooked a brow in wonder, trying to analyze what she was getting at.

"Look, Miss Lawrence needs to marry someone to inherit the assets. She doesn’t have a boyfriend now and assuming that she doesn’t have anyone else to consider, wouldn’t Kyrell be a good choice for her to marry?" Amy narrowed her shoulders and raised her hands questioningly, excited by the possibility.

"Amy, your notion will work only if Miss Lawrence doesn’t have any male friends or acquaintances. Why would she marry Kyrell when she can marry someone she already trusts, like the young man in her office," Isaac reasoned, finding the possibility of Sienna marrying Kyrell zero.

"Like the man who works for her. What’s his name?" Xavier asked, recalling the young man who previously was her brother’s assistant. "Edward Jones or something?"

"Yeah." Isaac nodded, agreeing with Xavier. "If he isn’t in a relationship, wouldn’t he be a better choice? I mean, put yourself in Miss Lawrence’s shoes. Why would she marry a man who she barely knows?"

"I don’t know." Amy was convinced by their reasons. Yet, somewhere she hoped that Sienna would ask Kyrell to marry her. He was the best choice; at least, in her opinion, he was. "Maybe I’m being too optimistic."

"You just want the best for your friend. We understand," Xavier hugged her shoulder when he saw how downcast she looked. "Hopefully, by some miracle, Kyrell has a chance."

"Hopefully."

Meanwhile, oblivious to his friends’ thoughts, Kyrell found a secluded spot and answered Axel’s call.

"A?"

"Ky, I called you a few times. Were you busy?" Axel asked, his low bass voice filled with dominance. From his tone alone, one could easily say he was a man of authority.

"Yes," Kyrell replied absentmindedly.

"Can I speak to you now? Are you free?"

Kyrell heard Axel ask, followed by the sound of pages flipping.

"Or should I call you later?" Axel paused, giving him time to decide.

Kyrell breathed heavily, feeling faintly suffocated.

"I’m free now, A."

"Ky, I finished my work in Washington. I’ll be coming to San Francisco in a week."

Kyrell’s eyes widened and he almost cursed loudly. Biting his tongue before he acted mindlessly, he shut his eyes tight.

"That’s great. Take your time, A. There’s no rush."

"There is. I can’t wait anymore." Axel sighed, sounding crestfallen all of a sudden. "How’s everything over there?"

Kyrell didn’t reply for a moment. He didn’t know what to say.

"Ky, are you there?" Axel’s voice turned high, breaking Kyrell out of his trance.

"I’m here, A."

"I thought the call was disconnected. So, how’s everything going?" Axel repeated his question and this time, Kyrell didn’t dilly-dally anymore.

"Everything’s going well, A. Slowly, everything’s returning to normal."

"How’s Sienna? Is she alright?"

Kyrell pursed his lips, dreading to even think of the answer. He didn’t know how Sienna was. How could he answer his friend when he didn’t have the answer himself?

"She is fine, A," Kyrell lied, guilt gnawing at his heart. He felt like a sinner for lying to his friend.

"Why is your voice low? Are you in the presence of a crowd? Is Sienna around you?"

Kyrell hummed, not having the courage to lie to his friend anymore.

"I see. I’ll not hold you up anymore. You must be busy. I’ll meet you in a week," Axel said before the call ended and Kyrell stared at his phone, running his fingers over the screen.

He was so stressed at that moment that any stress-measuring device would explode.

Lowering his head, he pressed his glabella as he mumbled, "A, how do I tell you that Sienna is not fine?"
