Chapter 55: New CFO

Sienna looked out the window and tapped her fingers against her elbows. She couldn’t fathom why her father had asked Simon not to interfere in Herbert’s matter anymore. What was the secret and why did her father not want anyone to know about it? fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

Since the moment she read the message on Simon’s phone, confusion swirled in her mind, and it hadn’t left her even after she had finished work.

"Miss Lawrence, are you alright?" Kyrell asked when he saw her absent-minded gaze. He knew what was troubling her, for he, too, was puzzled by the unexpected information they had stumbled upon.

What was the secret Sienna’s father was trying to hide? Did he know something about Herbert that could endanger his life?

Kyrell’s eyes shook when a possibility sprang in his mind. Subconsciously, he tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

Was Herbert behind the Lawrence family’s mishap? Was the man detrimental to Sienna’s life?

Amy turned slightly to glance at Sienna when she didn’t reply to Kyrell’s question. Seeing her lost in thoughts, she pursed her lips and retrieved a bar of chocolate from the glove compartment. She had bought it a few minutes before they departed from the Lawrence Group.

"Miss Lawrence, would you like to have some chocolate?" she asked, her voice loud enough to snap Sienna’s chain of thoughts.

While Kyrell looked at Amy strangely, Sienna blinked a few times to clear her thoughts.

"Did you say something?" She stared at the two in the front seats, wondering what she had missed.

"Miss Lawrence," Amy turned around in her seat until she was facing Sienna. "Whenever I’m stressed, I eat something sweet. It helps me deal with my stress. Do you want to check if it works on you as well?"

Amy pushed the bar of chocolate forward while Sienna stared at her strangely.

"That’s an odd way to deal with your stress."

"Well, it’s not like I can immediately teleport to the gym and release my stress on the punching bag, can I?" Amy joked and Sienna laughed, agreeing with her on this.

"Thanks." Sienna took the chocolate bar and took only a quarter of it before returning the rest to Amy.

"Miss Lawrence, do you have anything to do on Sunday?"

"Sunday?" Sienna frowned, recalling if she had anything scheduled for the day.

"Yes. It’s Isaac’s birthday. Before we came here, we had made arrangements already. But..."

Kyrell’s head snapped towards Amy instantly, his eyes filled with a subtle warning and Amy stopped speaking immediately.

"Oh, I’m sorry. Because of me, your plans got sabotaged." Sienna felt bad. Although she wasn’t at fault, she still felt a pang of guilt hitting her heart.

"Not exactly, Miss Lawrence." Amy was quick before the woman became sad again. "Instead, of celebrating in LA, we will be celebrating here. The the same. Do you want to join us?"

"Can I?" Sienna asked hopefully. The past few days had been filled with sadness, agony, and immense stress. She could take a break and enjoy some celebration.

"Why not? We’d love to have you with us."

"Well, okay then."

"The plan isn’t confirmed yet. I’ll tell you about it tomorrow." Amy informed and took a bite from the remaining candy bar.

"Surely." Sienna nodded, finding her stress vanishing slowly. "Thanks."

"No worries, Miss Lawrence. You’re one of us now." Amy smiled widely and turned around to face the front.

Kyrell didn’t speak even once the entire time. His focus was all on the road and occasionally, on Sienna.

Instantly, his eyes looked for her in the rearview mirror, and they crinkled in relief when he saw her smiling. Her previous tense expression was nowhere in sight. She looked serene and relaxed, a first since her family was murdered.

’Thanks, Amy. I owe you this time.’ He was immensely grateful to Amy for lifting Sienna’s mood.

"By the way, did anyone approach you guys after you started spreading rumors about my favoritism towards Mr. Winchester?" Sienna probed.

"Although we weren’t approached by anyone, we did notice people acting strangely," Amy said, pursing her lips.

"Soon then. Just be careful." Sienna warned, feeling her stress return. The person who wanted her dead was dangerous and she wasn’t willing to put any more lives at risk.

The Cheetah Corps were formidable sure. But they didn’t know their enemies might. It was better to be careful than sorry.

"Yes, Miss Lawrence."

Sienna wanted to ask something but was interrupted by a call.

"Yes, Frank."

"Miss Lawrence, I have a good news for you." Frank’s joy was impossible to not notice and Sienna’s lips curled up, realizing what he was about to say.

What else could it be other than Anthony gaining consciousness? It was the only matter in the current predicament that could make Frank happy and her too.

"Is it about Anthony?" Sienna asked, feeling her heart pick up speed in anticipation.

"Yes, Miss. Anthony has gained consciousness." Frank was over the moon and he couldn’t stop smiling. Since the moment Agnes had informed him, his smile hadn’t dwindled even once.

"That’s amazing news. How is he?" A knot in her heart finally cleared and Sienna felt less guilty.

"He’s out of danger, Miss. It will take a few weeks for him to recover though."

"That’s not a problem. Let him rest well and recuperate well. His well-being is of utmost importance."

"Yes, Miss."

"I have a meeting to attend. I’ll visit Anthony after I finish."

"Yes, Miss."

The call ended and Sienna leaned back in her seat. Sighing loudly in relief, she couldn’t stop smiling.

"Anthony’s awake," Sienna informed Kyrell and the man smiled when he saw her relieved expression.

"That’s good news, Miss Lawrence."

"Let’s visit him on the way home."

"Yes, Miss Lawrence."

Kyrell would do anything she wanted. She just had to say and he’d be ready.

"Have we reached yet?" Sienna asked, glancing at the time. It had been almost an hour since they left the company.

"A few minutes more, Miss Lawrence."

"Great. Were we followed today?" Sienna asked, suddenly recalling the previous day’s high-speed chase.

"No, Miss Lawrence. I guess after yesterday’s events, they are on alert now," Kyrell replied, glancing at Amy.

"That’s good. I hope this ends soon. I’m tired of it." Sienna mumbled the last few words to herself. Yet, the people heard her, and their lips thinned into hard lines.

"Miss Lawrence, is this the correct address?" Kyrell stared at the bungalow before him doubtfully. They had reached their destination. Yet, he couldn’t help but wonder if this was the place Sienna wanted to go.

"Yeah. Don’t worry. It looks creepy from the outside. It’s nothing like this inside."

"Have you been here before, Miss Lawrence?" Kyrell was surprised. He had never expected Sienna to have visited such an eerie place before. From the outside, it looked like a haunted house. If not for the other bungalows in the area, it wasn’t difficult to assume they were visiting a ghost house.

"Yes, a long time ago. I came here with Dad."

Kyrell stopped the car outside the bungalow and Sienna was the first to get out.

"I’d suggest only two of you to follow me. The man is quite eccentric. He might not appreciate a crowd," Sienna said and Kyrell sent the instructions to the other three men.

Sienna rang the intercom and waited. At first, there wasn’t any response. The intercom buzzed for a long time before ending, prompting her to try again.

When there wasn’t any response on the third try, Amy said, "Maybe they aren’t at home."

"That’s not true." Sienna laughed helplessly and shook her head. "That man is a homebody. He hates going out unless absolutely necessary."

On the fifth ring, the intercom was finally accepted.

"Who is it?" a lazy voice questioned in annoyance.

"Mr. Brendon Curtis, this is Sienna Lawrence."

"Go away. I don’t know any Sienna." The man wasn’t harsh by any means. He just sounded grumpy.

"Are you sure, Mr. Curtis? I only have to send an order and your dividends will be paused immediately.

"Hey, that’s not fair," the man complained, obviously dissatisfied. "You can’t do it."

"I can’t do it? Are you sure, Mr. Curtis?" Sienna questioned smugly and Kyrell and Amy looked at each other, wondering what was happening.

"It’s against the law. I am going to sue you." Brendon threatened. But it only served to widen Sienna’s smile.

"Sure, go ahead. If that’s what takes you to leave your cozy house."

"You..." The man huffed. "I won’t let you go."

"We’ll see about that."

There was a loud buzz and the gates opened the next second. Sienna shook her head, finding the man as amusing as always.

They didn’t have to knock on the door for Brendon was already waiting for them.

"You, young lady, are a menace," Brendon scolded, glaring at her through his glasses.

"And you’re as adorable as I remember."

"Don’t treat me like a child. Your old man used to do the same and now, you’re doing it."

Kyrell was surprised to see a man in his late forties bicker with Sienna like a child. And Sienna was no less. She entertained him patiently as if she were dealing with a petulant kid.

Brendon huffed loudly and turned around, keeping the door open and Sienna followed him silently.

Kyrell and Amy were right behind and were astonished to see how vastly different the bungalow was inside. It was warm, cozy, and well-maintained. There was a homely feel, with no over-the-top decorations or tacky objects placed haphazardly. The place was meticulously designed and maintained.

The man placed a tray with some cups and saucers and another containing ingredients to make tea.

"Make your own tea. I’m too old to be entertaining you."

Sienna didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. If the forty-something man was too old, what about people in their sixties and seventies? What should they call themselves?

"It’s fine, Mr. Curtis. Let’s talk first." She brushed it off, deciding to handle the important matter first.

"What talk? I have nothing to talk to you about."

"But I do and I hope you’ll listen to me."

Brendon remained silent, an indication for Sienna to start speaking.

"Mr. Curtis, I want you to join the Lawrence Group as the Chief Financial Officer."
