Chapter 1454: Chapter 240: The True Meaning

"Hmm... and then?" Danacus asked Pannis with a smile that was not quite a smile, "What’s the meaning behind my actions?" frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Exactly, what is the significance of such an act? Generally, any creature has its reasons for doing something, let alone a deity like Danacus; it’s even more so. Humans might occasionally engage in some meaningless acts, but deities do not. Every act of a deity has its purpose. However, merely becoming powerful is not a purpose because the concept of power itself is relative to weakness and is not an absolute notion. Therefore, there must be a deeper meaning behind becoming powerful." Pannis tapped his fingers on the ground, analyzing step by step, "Let’s think about it, what would you gain if you devoured the Divine Soul of a deity? I am not a deity, nor have I ever devoured anything, so I don’t know, but from the last era’s War of Faith where many deities were keen on fighting for faith through slaughter, it’s clear that there must be some benefits. So, what could these benefits be? Over the years, I’ve asked many members of the clergy, and although they don’t understand completely, they still provided some pieces of answers. From these fragments, I seem to have guessed part of the answer: when one devours another, it seems possible to acquire the other’s knowledge, memory, power, and authority, although only partially, but it’s still very beneficial for strengthening oneself."

"That’s right, very beneficial," Danacus asked as if guiding Pannis, "But enhancing oneself does not depart from the realm of becoming powerful; it’s not the deeper meaning."

"Because you interrupted me before I finished. Don’t disrupt me," Pannis said with an eye roll in a contemptuous manner, only continuing after the other party made a non-committal shrug as if following a bodily habit, "Devouring a Divine Soul, plundering a deity’s power and knowledge, may ultimately just strengthen oneself, but accumulation will eventually lead to qualitative change. When devouring happens frequently, the results differ. Hundreds of deities represent control over nearly all the rules in the Yarran World and signify the deepest understanding of these rules. The more Divine Souls you devour, the deeper your understanding of this world becomes, and the higher your degree of control. If this trend continues, what will happen once you’ve devoured all the Divine Souls? Perhaps only one state can describe it, that of true omniscience and omnipotence, completely controlling this world."

Danacus remained silent, his expression growing serious as he silently listened to Pannis analyze his goal. Clearly, Pannis’s analysis was gradually nearing the true answer, which is why he appeared so solemn.

"To this point, we’ve nearly reached the limits of what mortals can imagine and understand, but I wonder if this might not completely constitute your ultimate goal? Even at this step, it’s still just a node in your grand plan," Pannis seemed to be questioning Danacus, yet also seemed to be questioning himself, "So, I boldly pushed my imagination forward another step. Once you truly control this world, having achieved true omniscience and omnipotence, what then? Perhaps, like devouring Divine Souls, you could devour the entire world, turning it into part of your power. This world was personally created by Lord Yarra, always belonging to the intrinsic power of Lord Yarra. By devouring this world, you would absorb a part of Lord Yarra’s origin power, through which you could break through the limitations of this world and enter another deeper and vaster world, which I cannot comprehend or explain. Then, you could pursue the worlds created by Lord Yarra in that vaster universe, one by one devouring them, gradually absorbing and digesting Lord Yarra’s origin power; thus, your ultimate goal is actually to become the second Lord Yarra, or even to eventually replace Lord Yarra and become the new sole ruler."

"I must admit, as a mortal creature, you are quite impressive," Danacus said with a grim face, "Not everyone dares to think this way."

"But it makes sense, doesn’t it?" Pannis said seriously, looking Danacus in the eye, "This explains a lot of things. Why do the few deities I’ve encountered seem to owe us a great debt, continually empowering us? The Storm God Karet does so, perhaps because we solved the Nightmare Spirit’s disturbance of the deep sea, but what about other deities? Over the years, we’ve encountered no barriers from the deities or the church; in fact, anything involving the deities has gone unusually smoothly. On the plains, wherever we go, we are warmly welcomed—is this merely the Beastmen being hospitable, or is it guided by the War God and the ancestors? In the depths of the City of Innocence, we reside amicably with followers of the Wind God, whose clergy are as elusive as the wind, yet they almost completely obey our commands. On the mountain, we drink under the statue of the Fire God, in the caves, we are protected by dark deities, and the Earth Goddess Denia even personally appeared before me. As for the Forest Goddess Yuktiraxil, she even directly allowed me to use... ah, that should remain a secret. Love is never without reason; I don’t believe that just because I am attractive, all the deities would treat me especially well. Thus, there’s only one reason: because we have thwarted your plan and will do so again, preventing matters from developing in the worst direction, sparing the deities from major trouble, so they owe us favors and treat us well everywhere. There’s only one point I can’t explain: if the deities know your plan, why don’t they actively attack your Divine Kingdom to eliminate the risk in advance?"

"They can’t do it, because of the unique nature of this place. My Divine Kingdom is within the concept range of the Divine Barrier. If I leave the Divine Kingdom voluntarily, I would be expelled beyond the Divine Barrier. If I don’t leave, they are unable to reach my Divine Kingdom," Danacus once again began pacing on the spot, after a long silence, openly answering Pannis’s question, confirming his suspicions from the sideline, "Here, I can freely execute my plan, and they, due to the obstruction of the Divine Barrier, can do nothing but watch me successively approach victory."
