Chapter 1407: Chapter 193: Danacus’s Conspiracy

Kyle’s face was deathly pale, his forehead dotted with cold sweat, and his lips almost bitten through by his own teeth. His usually steady hands were shaking uncontrollably, but when Nellie’s hand grasped his, the trembling miraculously stopped. The teeth clenched on his lips began to slowly relax, and the tension in his expression eased. Even his heavy and rapid breathing gradually returned to its normal softness. Clearly, whether it was because of the held hand or the change in his teammates, he was slowly walking back from the brink of collapse.

"Take a calm look around, everyone’s doing very well. You’re not alone in bearing the pressure. When you need it, everyone will stand by your side, sharing the burden on your shoulders. Look, everyone is desperately trying to share your burden, to buy you time to stand up again." Nellie’s voice, strong and indomitable, now softened to an incredibly gentle tone, a light breath that brushed against Kyle’s face like a breeze bringing calmness. The gentle sound was low and soothing, like a lullaby sung beside a child’s ear at midnight: "Dear, I understand how you feel right now, but you must know, nothing is perfect, not even the Deity itself. Everyone makes mistakes, and making mistakes is not terrible as long as you try to make amends. Look, in truth, you have done your best, really, no one could have done better. You gathered everyone together, you gave hope to everyone, to the whole world. You led us here, through countless Undead, charging into the Divine Kingdom of Danacus, taking the battle to Danacus himself. Throughout the Fourth Epoch, you are the first to achieve these feats. Yes, you’re not perfect, but you are the best, the most glorified hero."

"I’m not perfect..." Kyle’s voice was weak and dry, drier than the perennially water-starved sands of the desert: "But am I a hero?"

"Yes, you are a hero, a hero trusted by everyone." Nellie consoled softly: "Look, everyone’s continuing with the tactics you proposed. Look, look into their eyes, everyone still trusts you, still holds you in high esteem, still sees you as their hope. Do you think that’s because you are perfect? Do you believe they treat you so because they think you will surely lead us to victory? You’re underestimating everyone. They trust you because you are trustworthy; they respect you because you are worthy of respect. Whether or not you can lead everyone to final victory... that’s not important. Everyone is willing to follow you, willing to obey your orders, because you are Kyle, a trusted hero. Even if you lead us all to hell, everyone would face death with a smile. Have you forgotten? Each of us has said we came prepared to die; it’s not a joke, it’s the truth. Everyone is prepared to die if it means we can strive in battle alongside you, just once."

"Even though I’m not perfect, even if I can’t lead everyone to victory, they still trust me?" Kyle’s expression was still somewhat bewildered, asking as if in a dream: "Why?"

"Because you’re Kyle, dear," Nellie said, her ordinary face breaking into a beautiful smile: "You’re upright and selfless, brave and Fearless. You would spend all your belongings to hire mercenaries to help villagers move their possessions before a tsunami engulfs their homes, and you would confront Demigod magical beasts in the Lost Forest for a child’s commission of three silver coins. You strive to protect this world, you strive to uphold justice, and everyone sees you as the embodiment of bravery and justice. With all this, why wouldn’t they trust you? Why wouldn’t they see you as a hero?"

"Yes, I am a hero." Kyle’s eyes finally regained a trace of life, and he spoke softly, "Though I’m not perfect, I’m not without redeeming qualities. At least I have courage, and I can still use my life..."

Kyle’s words were cut short because in his vision, the Soul of Danacus started to move. It suddenly transformed into a bolt of lightning, streaking toward him at an incomprehensible high speed.

Nobody expected that Danacus, who seemed like the victor, was also especially irritable at this time. From the outset of their meeting, he had set his sights on Kyle’s body. The bodies of others had more or less some defects, and although the Drakes’ bodies had no flaws, the bodies of the Guardians’ group couldn’t perfectly match their Divine Souls. They were only a secondary choice. Only Kyle’s body was near perfect—the best option. However, the struggle for the body is often a contest of will. Although the power of a Divine Soul can suppress the body’s original spirit without suspense, Danacus, originally weak, didn’t intend to waste his strength suppressing Kyle’s soul. After all, the soul of a Demigod is incredibly resilient and to suppress it in a short amount of time would be too costly in terms of the power expended. So, in fact, right from the beginning, Danacus had seen through Kyle’s weakness and had formulated his own plan, gradually attacking Kyle’s heart, leading his inner spirit to ultimately collapse. A collapsed soul cannot possibly resist a Divine Soul.

Danacus had almost succeeded. Under his relentless assault, Kyle’s spirit was on the verge of collapse. According to his original plan, the next step would have been to clear the obstacles around him, eliminate the other intruders, and then take over Kyle’s body. However, Danacus could never have anticipated that the female knight, who he had not previously considered important, would pull Kyle back from the brink of collapse within a minute using only a few words.

He didn’t know how Nellie had done it, nor did he want to know. All he knew was that if he delayed any further, his previous plan was about to be thwarted. Kyle’s spirit would recover soon; although it would still be relatively low, dealing with him would become much more troublesome than when he was on the verge of collapse. Therefore, Danacus had to urgently change his plan, ignoring everyone else and charging directly at Kyle.

"And then what?" Catherine only then took a deep breath. The young knight realized she had been so tense that she had almost forgotten to breathe, until Pannis suddenly stopped his story, which slightly eased her anxiety.

Pannis didn’t answer but slowly stood up, walked over to the net-like window, and looked out at the dark world outside, whispering, "The night is deep, it’s time to rest."

"Hey." Lina was about to protest when Catherine covered her mouth. The young knight gave Pannis a deep look, shook her head slightly at Lina, and sighed softly, "Right, it’s time to rest."
