Chapter 1315: Chapter 101 Are We?
"Tsk." Pannis curled his lip and, with a twirl of his eye, he spotted the only human female officer among the four young officers. He immediately dashed to her side with the same posture and enthusiastically said, "It’s such a pleasure to see a human, hello, hello." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
Confronted with his smiling face and such passionate demeanor, the female officer subconsciously extended her hand, only to discover she had been fooled. This fellow who called himself Pannis had hands as cold as the ice of the Perpetual Icefield. Within less than three seconds of his hands enveloping her right one, it turned completely numb from the cold, and his hands seemed to be continuously shifting positions, as if he was... warming them?
"Whoosh," an arrow whizzed closely by the female officer’s hand, and before it could hit Pannis’s arm, he had already promptly drawn back his hands, blowing warm breath into his palms while exclaiming with a tone of someone who had a narrow escape, "I’ve finally come back to life. I shouldn’t have ridden the magic-powered motorbike at midnight. With gloves, the mana doesn’t flow well, and without them, I almost froze to death. Huff, huff, I’ve finally recovered."
The corner of the female officer’s eye twitched violently. Had it not been for her hand being numb and her presence in front of the two commanders, she believed she would have drawn her sword and chopped him into twenty or thirty pieces. What she regretted most at the moment was why she hadn’t learned from the commanders to simply stand back with her hands behind her and ignore the other’s attentiveness.
"Just as His Majesty said." Dreide’s stern appearance was accompanied by a smile that was terrifying, but those who knew her were aware that the female general was just fierce-looking. Actually, aside from when she was disciplining the troops, she was quite amiable. Her smile, though fearsome, was genuinely warm. Still standing with her hands behind her back, as if the arrow that had intervened for her subordinate hadn’t been shot by her, she casually said, "You’ve become quite lively, little fellow."
"Oh, isn’t this Grandma Dreide?" Pannis seemed to have had previous encounters with the female general and was quite familiar with her, which allowed him to casually wave his hand and say gaily, "I actually didn’t recognize you just now, ha ha, ha ha, what a surprise."
"Grandma... grandma." This time, the female general’s smile wasn’t terrifying at all, but with her right hand resting on the hilt of a short sword at her waist and a chill murderous intent in her eyes, she said in a very gentle voice, "It seems Her Majesty the Queen was quite euphemistic. You little fellow have become something that can’t be described simply as lively. However, I didn’t quite catch what you said just now. Could you please repeat it, Lord Kyle the All-Powerful?"
"Hahaha, it’s just a joke, Aunt Dreide. It’s been over a hundred years and no need to be so worked up." Pannis pounded his chest with a fist, nodding, "I understand now why I didn’t recognize you. Turns out that you’ve grown even younger during the time we haven’t seen each other, Aunt Aide. Even the scars on your face have grown considerably prettier."
The several officers nearby had an urge to cover their faces. Although they were still unclear about the situation, they unanimously thought that it was a miracle this person had lived to this day without being beaten to death. However, the young Elf officer was surprised to see Pannis, knowing among the young people present that the facial scar, which could be considered disfiguring for the female general, was not a subject to avoid mentioning as most would think. On the contrary, this scar was a symbol of Dreide’s most proud combat achievements, and the female general didn’t mind when others brought it up; instead, she was happy about it.
It was said that over eight hundred years ago, when Dreide hadn’t yet become a general and was serving as a guardian of the forest, she was stationed for thirty years at an outpost on the border of the Forest of Death. During her tenure, she encountered a sudden beast surge, where over twenty Demigod magical beasts charged out of the Forest of Death, aiming to enter the Lost Forest to carry out a hunt. At that time, there were only two sentinels in the outpost. To be safe, Dreide sent the other sentinel back to the Lost Forest to call for reinforcements, while she stayed behind alone, holding off all the magical beasts. By the time the support troops arrived, what they saw was only the corpses of a dozen Demigod magical beasts and Dreide standing in the middle of the beast carcasses, soaked with blood. The remaining invading beasts had been driven away by Dreide’s valiant courage and never appeared again. This battle spread Dreide’s fame throughout the Lost Forest and left her with many scars that were difficult to heal. However, the female general always considered these scars as medals of honor, never attempting to conceal them.
Indeed, just as the young Elf officer had suspected, the female general was not angered by Pannis’s words, but instead was amused into laughter. While stroking the scar on her face, Dreide kicked at Pannis playfully and said with annoyance, "You little rascal are getting worse at sweet-talking women, who talks like that?"
"Hehe, Aunt Aide, such words simply show my honesty," Pannis replied with a grin before turning to the old general beside him and bowing, "General Buck, it’s a pleasure to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine, Lord Kyle. I grew up hearing about your exploits. To meet you in person is a piece of fortune I can brag about for the rest of my life," the old general saluted respectfully. "I was so excited to hear you were coming here that I couldn’t sleep all day yesterday, haha. I spent the whole day imagining what kind of person you are. I never expected you to be so familiar with General Aide. If I had known, I would have asked her about your deeds a long time ago."
"You flatter me too much, General Buck. The courage you showed by readily taking on such a challenging task to lead the army is equally admirable," Pannis responded with a Kyle-like politeness, smiling faintly as he spoke, "As for my exploits, they are all in the past and not worth mentioning anymore."
"Alright, you two youngsters," Dreide’s address left both unable to retort, only able to respond with bitter smiles, "The sun is about to rise, and the temperature is getting higher. If we want to chat, let’s go back to the camp and sit down to talk. Kyle, guess what I’ve prepared for you?"
"Salty egg-filled pies that could kill with salt, Aunt Aide, that’s the only thing you know how to make," Pannis said before breaking off and running away, "Just what’s needed to replenish my salt intake, but I hope you’ve prepared enough water, Aunt Aide, I’ll need to quench my thirst after eating."
"You little scamp," the fierce-looking Dreide laughed and cursed softly while she and General Buck quickly followed Pannis, "You never said they were bad when you first ate them."
"Everything tastes good to someone who has been hungry for five days," Pannis suddenly paused, "But doesn’t that take a long time to prepare? Aunt Aide, you knew I was coming a while ago? Oh right, it must have been Flare who informed you beforehand."
"Mmm, the monarch did send a letter a few days ago," as they approached the camp gates, Dreide finally couldn’t suppress her curiosity, "But there’s one thing I haven’t been able to figure out these past few days. Why didn’t you all come together? Why leave in separate groups and then arrive here only a few hours apart? Is there some special plan?"
"We... we?" A foreboding feeling suddenly rose in Pannis’s heart. Following Dreide’s gaze towards the camp gate, they saw several figures standing guard there, among them one in the lead looking at Pannis with a half-smile, gently shaking a familiar envelope in his hand.
