Chapter 29 - 26 Eren Jaeger

Dreams.

The subconscious world where the minds of the Mighty and Mediocre ventured to at night.

Many explained it to be many things. Most attributing it to the deepest thoughts of its viewer replayed in their most vulnerable moments. Others said it was an illusory representation of our hopes, dreams, goals and inner selves.

However, there laid one, unusual theory that usually went ignored.

One that held far more substance than everything else we had been told.

That dreams weren't illusions.

Neither were they made up figments of imagination that came about in our hours of rest.

No.

They were real, all real.

That car you bought in them, it was real. Arsenal winning the Champions League? It actually happened.

Those nightmares of the boogie men in your closet. They were always there.

The one about monsters under your bed, the one where you fell from a tall building, the one about being chased by a clown while naked, if you've ever dreamed about being eaten by a Titan.

Those weren't just dreams. They were real, and they all happened. Just not in your reality.

Out there, somewhere, your wacky dreams manifested as the reality for another you, in another universe. Everything, it was all out there somewhere.

Dreams were just the way in which you discovered this. The time when your consciousness blurred between worlds, and you can perceive what normally you should not. It was why people fell into Coma's despite nothing wrong physically happening to them. As their minds had wandered too far from their bodies to be pulled back. To realms unknown, and should they wake, they would have no idea it actually happened.

Unknown POV

___

'Eren.'

The voice sounded in his head.

"Huh?"

A young, firm male voice answered, turning to reveal a young boy with short dark hair and Teal green eyes. The darkness gave way to light. And when it did, the boy opened his eyes.

'"I'm ..."

The boy was stunned for a minute. Looking around, what fell into his eyes were the wide open fields of land. Lands quite similar to Wall Rose.

"How did I ..." He turned around, seeing nothing but grass and trees in his vicinity. This, this looked like the fields of wall Rose.

The boy thought. Had he left the Corps Location and ventured off? How? He didn't even remember getting here.

Logically speaking, he should be in the Training fields.

However ...

'Eren.'

The boy froze. The next moment, he turned around sharply, towards the direction the voice came from.

Nothing.

"What in hell? ..." Nothing could be found. And yet ...

'Erenn!'

It came out again. Resounding from every direction. Each time, a tad bit more unsettling than the first time he heard it.

"Who are you?" The boy gritted his teeth in frustration as his eyes darted around. "Show yourself you coward!"

He put himself in a fighting stance. Placing everything he had learned from the military and Annie in the past four years to use.

"Fight me if you dare!"

'Errr ennn!' The voice didn't respond to his threats, just calling out his name yet again. The creepy drawl in its tome sending a momentary chill down his spine.

"What the hell is this?"

He moved frequently, never allowing his back to face one direction for long.

"Something's wrong" He thought, sweat had started dripping down his forehead.

"... something's definitely ..."

"EREN!"

The voice came again, practically screaming this time. The boy stiffened instantly as all his hair stood on end. The voice ... It sounded so ... So like ... Like it was right behind him.

He turned again.

His eyes widening at what he saw.

"How did? ..." The previous open space was gone. Behind him, was a thick, dense forest that seemed to stretch on for as far as the eye could see.

He had no time to ponder on this. As the sound of clear cut footsteps followed the new phenomena. From the darkness hidden within those tall trees, the footsteps emerged. Calm and steady as it drew closer with its advancement. The boy took several steps back.

Something was wrong, Like really wrong. Still, when had his personality been one to ever admit defeat?

"Bring it on! I'm telling you I ain't afraid of ..."

His voice paused.

Froze if you will. Because the footsteps had stopped, and before him was a person that was most likely the one calling him. However ...

"You?"

Eren couldn't believe his eyes. Because right in front of him, was a Teenage male with long dark hair, dark clothes, uncanny facial looks, an indifferent expression, and his most striking feature ... A pair of Teal green eyes.

Eyes, just like his.

Seeing the person before him that was basically an older version of himself, the Fourteen year old Eren Jaeger was stunned.

"Who are ..." He opened his mouth to speak, then stopped at what happened next. Inside the forest, deep within the darkness, Two large, emerald green eyes lit up like bright, burning orbs. Each containing large, unfiltered amounts of malice. Followed by a deep, nasal growl emerging.

Instantly, he felt his scalp go numb as all the hairs on his body again stood erect. Those weren't orbs, those ... Those were eyes. Yet before he could react ...

It happened then. The Trees burst apart as a large, naked humanoid figure emerged at blinding speed.

Jagged Teeth, bare skin, frenzied expression, glowing eyes. Large, humongous, radiating a terrifying intent to kill.

'Titan.' The boy thought in horror.

Time seemed to freeze. In fact, it did.

He couldn't move an inch, neither could anything else. The trees blown apart by the sudden eruption all stilled in the air. The debris flying in all directions halted.

Nothing moved.

Except one.

The Teenager standing right before the Midair Titan. Eren watched as his mouth moved, and words that he couldn't hear were spoken one after another.

Time elapsed.

The elder him went silent. Then, time resumed.

Like hitting a play button, everything came back to normal. The tree debris resumed movement, as well as his body.

The giant pointed ear, green eyed Titan was no exception. It rushed over in the blink of an eye, dived, and opened its mouth wide. Eren who could barely move a muscle, watched as he was swallowed alive.

_____

"Eren!"

In the 3rd Cadet corps located in southern Wall Rose,

Eren Jaeger jolted awake with a starting gasp. His body shot upright, heart hammering wildly against his ribcage. Cold sweat drenched his forehead as his eyes darted frantically around, trying to reconcile reality with the vivid nightmare he'd just experienced.

"Eren, are you okay?" Mikasa's concerned voice cut through his disoriented state. She stood beside him, her perpetually calm face betraying just the slightest hint of worry in her dark eyes.

Eren blinked several times, the remnants of the dream still clinging to his consciousness. The image of himself being swallowed whole flickered behind his eyelids each time he blinked.

"Oh, Mikasa, it's just you," he mumbled, running a hand through his disheveled hair. His breathing gradually steadied as he took in his surroundings. They were out in an open field, the gentle afternoon breeze rustling through the grass. A few other cadets could be seen scattered across the landscape, engaged in their training exercises.

"You fell asleep during the survival exercise," Mikasa said, adjusting her red scarf slightly. "Shadis would have your head if he saw you like this."

Eren grimaced, remembering now. The cadets had been dispatched in small groups to practice wilderness survival techniques. They were supposed to be setting up makeshift shelters and identifying edible plants in the area. Somehow, he'd dozed off against a tree trunk while Mikasa had been gathering firewood.

"How long was I out?" he asked, stretching his stiff muscles.

"Not long. Maybe twenty minutes," she replied, her eyes lingering on his face. "You were muttering in your sleep. Your face looked... troubled."

Eren sighed, pushing himself up to his feet. The dream was already beginning to fade, but the unsettling feeling it left behind remained.

"I had a dream," he admitted reluctantly. "No... a nightmare."

Mikasa's expression softened. "Was it... about your mother again? About the Smiling Titan?"

Eren shook his head, a strange sensation stirring in his chest. His mother was alive—injured, but alive. There was no Smiling Titan in his nightmares, not anymore. Those nightmares had been replaced by something else, something he couldn't quite grasp.

"No, it wasn't that one," he said quietly.

Mikasa tilted her head slightly. "Then what was it?"

Eren furrowed his brow, trying to recall the details that were rapidly slipping away from his consciousness like water through his fingers.

"I don't know exactly," he replied after a moment of contemplation. "There was a forest... and I was there, but also not. Like there was another me, but older." He frowned deeper, struggling with the fragmented memories. "And there was a Titan... not like any I've seen before. It had these glowing green eyes and—"

He stopped abruptly, suddenly aware of how ridiculous he must sound. Dreams didn't mean anything. They were just manifestations of his deep-seated desire to eradicate all Titans.

Mikasa studied his face intently. "Eren, maybe these dreams—"

"It's nothing," he cut her off, his tone a bit sharper than he intended. "Just stupid nightmares. Forget I said anything."

Before Mikasa could press further, a bright flash of light streaked across the sky. Both teens looked up to see a white flare dissipating in the air above them.

"A white flare?" Eren said, puzzled. "That's the recall signal. Why are they ending the exercise early?"

Mikasa's expression grew serious. "Something must have happened."

The sound of hoofbeats approaching drew their attention. A horse galloped toward them, kicking up clouds of dust in its wake. Atop the steed was a familiar figure with blonde hair.

"There you guys are!" Armin called out, pulling his horse to a stop before them. His usually calm blue eyes were wide with urgency.

"Armin, what happened?" Eren asked, instantly alert.

Armin dismounted quickly, his movements betraying his agitation. "The exercise is over. All cadets have been called to reassemble at the training fields immediately."

"Why?" Mikasa asked, her voice even but her posture tensing.

Armin looked between his two friends, his expression grave. "Shadis has called for all of us to regroup. An emergency has come up."

"What kind of emergency?" Eren pressed, a knot forming in his stomach.

Armin swallowed hard, his eyes darting between Mikasa and lingering a lot longer on Eren. He seemed ... Hesitant.

"Armin?" Eren called out, noticing his reactions. The boy sighed. His voice dropping to just above a whisper as if speaking the words too loudly might make them more real. "A Titan was spotted in Wall Rose."
