Chapter 45 -41 Shadows Part 1

The two chatted for a bit, added each other’s Haofang IDs, and agreed to play together when they were free. Lin Fei then exited the game and logged onto QQ.

No sooner had he logged onto QQ than a series of beeping sounds quickly began to ring. The icon in the bottom right corner kept flashing. He quickly clicked on the icon.

“Are you there?” A handsome avatar instantly popped up a chat box.

Lin Fei checked the time; it had been sent last night.

“Guess you’re probably not online right now.” He tried sending a message.

“I’m here.”

Initially, he thought the other person definitely wouldn’t reply immediately. Surprisingly, the reply came right away.

“Why haven’t I seen you online recently?”

The avatar was named “Wind’s Weeping at Night.” It was an older brother Lin Fei had met online before his rebirth. They shared their frustrations and comforted each other, becoming unlikely friends despite the age gap; the other person was more than a decade older than Lin Fei, mature and mild-mannered.

“Been a bit busy lately, haven’t had time to go to the internet cafe,” Lin Fei replied.

“Something big recently happened here.”

“What happened?”

“A person got struck by lightning twice in a row and was perfectly fine, got up and continued running. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would have thought it was fake. The world really is full of wonders.”

“Struck by lightning twice and still alive?” Lin Fei was astonished.

“Yeah, I’ll send you a link; it’s a video I uploaded, recorded with my phone.” A link immediately appeared in the chat box.

Lin Fei gently clicked on it.

The webpage popped up, the video started buffering, and soon it began playing.

The image was a bit blurry and dark. However, you could clearly see a person walking slowly under a streetlamp.

Suddenly, a silver flash streaked across the screen and harshly struck the person on the head; the individual was immediately knocked down. Within a couple of seconds, however, he quickly got up, looked around, and started running. Before he had run far, another bolt of lightning instantly smashed onto his head. The person was knocked down again but still quickly got up as if nothing had happened and hurriedly ran off into the dark night.

“It’s so exaggerated. Struck by lightning twice and he’s fine.”

“Yeah, if I hadn’t caught it on my phone, I probably wouldn’t believe it myself.”

“That guy is incredibly lucky.” Chen Yun, who had also seen the video, couldn’t help but interject.

“Yeah, really lucky.” Lin Fei smiled, his gaze fixed on the screen as he replayed the scene over and over, closely observing.

“The direction of the lightning is off. It doesn’t look like it came from the sky.” He noticed that both bolts of lightning came from a slightly rightward direction. In other words, the lightning struck the person at an angle.

Could it be a Psychic? A Psychic who controls lightning? Is such a level of ability possible?

“Alright, I need to go now. Today was just a quick check on QQ; I have to go to work soon. By the way, I might have a business trip to Ping City soon. When I’m there, you’ll have to show me around since you know the place so well.” The chat box beeped again.

“Sure, but I’m just a poor student; I can’t afford to entertain at hotels.”

“Haha, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! If you come visit me this summer holiday, I’ll take care of you.”

“Alright then. Remember to let me know when you arrive.”

Time passed quickly, bit by bit. Over seven hours passed by in a flash, as if night had fallen in just a moment. Halfway through, Lin Fei and his friend each ordered a fried rice with eggs and ate at their computers—it served as their lunch. With that, their day was effectively over.

It was after nine at night when the two walked out of the internet café. Chen Yun had a look of reluctance on his face.

“Time flies. Today was awesome.”

Lin Fei smiled and nodded.

“Let’s just head back separately from here. I’ll take bus fifteen.”

“Alright, bye then. See you Monday.”

“See you Monday.”

Chen Yun walked a few steps away but then suddenly turned back around.

“Oh right, did you know about Xu Ke transferring schools?”

Lin Fei was startled. “No, I didn’t—she’s not in my class. How would I know?”

“Isn’t she your girlfriend?”

“Who said that?”

“Aren’t you guys often together?”

“Just being together doesn’t mean it’s that kind of relationship. We’re still so young,” Lin Fei retorted irritably.

“No wonder you didn’t know. Okay, I’m off.”

“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”

Standing at the entrance of the internet café, Lin Fei watched Chen Yun’s figure slowly disappear among the crowd before he turned and walked in the opposite direction.

The dense crowd brushed past him constantly—young, old, ugly, beautiful, tall, short… all kinds of people moving along the street, each with their own purposes, much like himself.

A sudden, inexplicable sense of loneliness surged from within Lin Fei. The countless people were like a slowly flowing river, and though surrounded by numerous individuals, he could never feel anyone’s companionship.

“To gain something, there naturally must be payments made,” he murmured softly. Looking up, he saw the multitude of people, their voices, their auras, their outfits, their lives…

“Such fragility.” Lin Fei was silent for a while, then gently straightened his collar. He pulled a black flip phone from his pocket, opened it, and skimmed through the two contacts in his phone book, choosing the first. He pressed the call button.

After a brief waiting tone, a sweet voice came through the phone.

“Boss, is there something you need?” This girl was the same club member who had provided him with information about Chen Yaojia. After witnessing Lin Fei’s clean and decisive handling of a situation, she had become extremely admiring and insisted on calling Lin Fei ‘boss.’ She also acted as his personal assistant.

“Come pick me up on Tongji Road; I think I’m being followed.”

“Okay, I’ll call you in ten minutes to tell you my location.” It wasn’t so much her picking him up as it was her handling the aftermath.

Gently hanging up the phone, Lin Fei caught a glimpse of a figure in the left corner of his eye and smiled subtly. Without further attention, he continued to walk along the sidewalk on the street.

The direction was toward a park at the street corner. At this moment, the gardens and trees on both sides of the plaza were shady and dark, with no one around. Only the dim light from street lamps was sporadically visible.

Having just walked a few steps, Lin Fei turned around to look behind him before suddenly speeding up to a run, dashing into the dark areas of the park. Following shortly, a young man with spiky hair and a grim expression ran out from the corner, looked around Lin Fei’s previous spot, and then chased after him into the park.

“You think you can run?” the young man said harshly in a low voice.
