Chapter 93: Even the smallest warmth could save a life

"I’m sorry, master," I said. "I don’t know what’s going on or if what I said offended you but I’m worried about you, just as much as you’re worried about me. So, please snap out of it."

My words served as a trigger and Jin-Yeok’s eyes began to clear up and he broke out of that state. His warmth began to return as well.

That was dangerous. Just what would’ve happened if he had stayed in that state for long?

Had he been suffering like that for a long time? He was like someone who was suffering from a frost disease. It must’ve been harsh.

He was a natural born killer before he started taking those drugs and those drugs seemed to have worsen his condition making him become a lunatic.

I wonder if he killed people in that state because he was searching for warmth that he could only get from their blood.

It was disgusting to think about how one would crave another’s blood like a vampire, but not to drink but he drenched in it instead.

Ah, that reminded me of a text. I know this is my world now but I just can’t help it when the concept of a novel rules it all.

’He stood amidst the carnage, surrounded by a dozen lifeless bodies. His figure was drenched in crimson, from the splatters of blood that had painted his skin as he ruthlessly slaughtered his opponents. The warm liquid seemed to satiate his thirst, yet simultaneously ignite a hunger for more. It had become a curse at this point, a vicious cycle he couldn’t escape. A curse that he had inflicted in himself with his desire to look perfect to the outside world while he sarm in the gutters of hell in the underworld.

A being of the underworld, he was. He man of status and infamy. He was feared and revered but all that stayed in the gutters. When day breaks, he washes his hands and steps out into the lights, once again putting on his mask of hypocrisy.

With a perfect smile on his face, he fooled those under the light. And when the sun sets again, he would rush back to the gutters.’

The text continued to show how much Jin-Yeok wanted to grasp the feeling of warmth that he got from spilling blood.

’He reveled in the rain of blood, the only warmth that could penetrate his cold, calculating exterior. The hot fluid that once pulsed through the veins of others like him was now the very thing that brought him a twisted sense of comfort.’

When I read that passage, I felt there was no one more hypocritical than him in this novel and that he was just a ruthless maniac whose only delight was spilling blood. But it turned out that he was actually searching for the warmth of others because of the side effects of the drugs and that search turned into a lunacy craving.

How do I heal a man that’s driven to that state?

That description was given around the time before he went mad so at this point, he shouldn’t be so deep into his craving from warmth.

And yet... It seems I’ve unwillingly and unknowingly pushed that event forward. It’s not like I did it on purpose.

It wouldn’t be long till Jin-Yeok was overrun by his lunacy craving.

Seriously, what was Su-Yeon doing at a time like that anyway? She couldn’t bath him with her blood, obviously, but I was sure she would be able to calm his thirst for blood if she shared some of her body heat with him periodically.

Even the smallest warmth could save a life.

Just like I just did... Though I never knew it would work out well since I only wanted to share my heat... If she had shared her heat with him, his condition wouldn’t have gotten so bad.

And now that I think about it, the time Jin-Yeok actually ran mad and went on a rampage was after he had stayed away from Jo-Pil for over two weeks. He did not sleep with Jo-Pil in that time and did not return to the mansion either.

So, it makes me wonder if his time with Jo-Pil helped him keep the madness at bay for much longer because his girlfriend was stingy with her own body.

"Jo-Pil," Jin-Yeok called. In any case, we needed to get rid of his addiction so he would start getting better. "You asked me to be honest with you, right?"

I paused. I... didn’t expect that.

Was he going to finally open up to me? That was faster than I expected but it was better now than later when it would be too late.

"Yes," I said.

"I want to promise you and be honest with you but in return, please, promise me that you won’t run from me after knowing the truth about me." He said.

It seems knowing I had an ability where I could tell that he killed someone helped me a lot. I didn’t expect him to believe it but he actually did. He did not doubt me, to but he was probably wondering to what extent my powers could tell his bad deeds.

"I promise," I said without hesitation.

"Promise me that you won’t be scared of me."

He had this desperation in his eyes. He couldn’t risk it. He couldn’t risk having me fear him after knowing the real man behind that smiling facade.

I mean, I already know that you kill people ruthlessly so there’s nothing else to be scared about.

"I promise you, Master. I will not be scared of you no matter what you do or the kind of things you plan to do." I said and stroked his hair. "I told you before, talking helps and I am a very good listener so tell me everything that weighs on your mind."

Go ahead. Spill all your dirty little secrets to me and let me comfort you. It’s only a matter of time before I have your entire heart in the palm of my hands.

He heard this and though reluctant, he finally decided to ’confess’.
