Chapter 789: 099 Auntie in Trouble_1

Lin Yuan’s sudden appearance startled Lady Yang, causing her to shiver. She stared blankly at her granddaughter, fuming as she approached, then grasped Lin Jiaxin’s arm and scoffed, "Father, don’t listen to her hypocritical words. She’s only approaching you because she knows you’re naive and soft-hearted. Don’t forget how she used to treat Mother and the rest of us."

Lin Jiaxin’s mouth opened and closed, incredulous as he looked at his daughter. He knew his own girl better than anyone; Lin Yuan couldn’t be cold-hearted. She had even kindly taken in street beggars, so it was impossible for her to mistreat an old lady who was one foot in the grave.

"Da Ya, what’s gotten into you? Your father was only..."

"Father, you’re just too kind," Lin Yuan interrupted before Lin Jiaxin could finish, using ’kind’ to push back his words. She then turned to Lady Yang, who was still in shock, and said, "Don’t you care about your two sons? Don’t you still want to bask in their glory and enjoy a comfortable old age? Then why don’t you go find them instead of coming back to our father?"

Lady Yang twisted her lips, repeatedly saying how she had wronged them as she reached into her sleeve, ready to take out the ten taels of silver to return to her son.

But before her hand could touch the silver, she heard Lin Yuan cry out urgently, "What are you trying to do? Don’t think that just because we come to talk to you, you can do whatever you want! Stop pretending to be innocent and fool anyone. I saw everything just now; do you have a rock hidden in your hand? Are you planning to hit my father with it?"

"I, I didn’t, I didn’t!" Lady Yang became more flustered as she listened and struggled to produce the item.

Just then, a figure suddenly emerged from the corner, and Li Feng’e’s sharp, spiteful voice followed, "Humph! Think you’re so great, don’t you? Is it just because you’ve got some lousy silver? Is it necessary to insult people like this?"

Neither Lady Yang nor Lin Jiaxin expected another person to be in the corner, and both widened their eyes at her, their hearts pounding with unease, wondering how long she had been eavesdropping and whether she had seen something she shouldn’t have.

Li Feng’e glared at Lady Yang again, impatiently howling, "You old hag, they don’t recognize you as their mother anymore, and yet you have the cheek to go fawning after them! Shameless! Now get back to your room, you’re only embarrassing us!"

After her rant, she disgustingly flicked her sleeve and couldn’t wait to leave.

"This, this." Lady Yang looked at Li Feng’e, then at Lin Jiaxin, seemingly understanding something, yet also not quite getting it.

Lin Jiaxin, however, had figured it out. No wonder his daughter’s attitude had taken a sudden one-eighty turn—it was all because of her.

Seeing Li Feng’e leave, Lin Yuan’s expression softened, and her voice lost the sharpness from before. She slightly smiled at Lady Yang and said, "I saw Li Feng’e sneaking over to listen to your conversation from afar, that’s why I acted like that. I hope you don’t mind."

Lin Jiaxin smiled with relief, patting his daughter on the shoulder, "I thought so! How could my daughter suddenly change? She was still very worried about your grandmother at home."

Lin Yuan chuckled and turned to Lady Yang, "The silver that father gave you, it’s best if you keep it for yourself. Make sure those two families don’t find out. Otherwise, I’m afraid you won’t have any silver to your name in the future."

"How did you know?" Before Lady Yang could speak, Lin Jiaxin widened his eyes in disbelief, looking at his daughter. He was sure no one had seen him give the silver. How could his daughter possibly know?

Lin Yuan glanced sideways at her father and said softly, "What, only Father Xing can understand me, but I can’t understand him? You, giving grandmother silver today, would have been the real surprise!"

Lin Jiaxin chuckled naively, warmed by having such a thoughtful daughter.

But Lady Yang was embarrassed. When Lin Yuan had appeared, she’d been so cold, and Lady Yang had thought the girl was angry with her and wouldn’t forgive her. She hadn’t realized that Lin Yuan was pretending to protect her silver. She felt petty, even a bit resentful toward her.

Lady Yang lowered her head, her old face flushing with guilt, and she didn’t dare to look up at her granddaughter.

Lin Yuan, of course, noticed her unease, but she didn’t want to bring up the past again. Moreover, Lady Yang was already regretful and had received her deserved punishment. It was better not to be too harsh on an old woman at the end of her years.
