Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Having the Ability_1

Lady Wu took the child to the west room, where Cheng Yue had finished eating her egg and was now breastfeeding. Nursing is an instinct; even though Cheng Yue was simple-minded, she still knew how to feed her baby, and the naive young mother holding her child looked the part.

Qian Manxia had been watching her niece and, upon hearing some noise outside, couldn’t bear to leave. When she saw Lady Wu enter, she asked, “Mother, what happened just now? Why did I hear a baby’s cry and a dog barking?”

Lady Wu replied, “It was a little dog barking outside the courtyard. I opened the door and let it in.” Holding out the child in her arms to Cheng Yue, she said, “Yueyue, this is also your child. You gave birth to two children today, a pair of twins of mixed sex.”

“Mother, I remember giving birth to only one child, and without a handle,” Cheng Yue said, her large eyes filled with confusion and a hint of shame. She knew her in-laws were eager for a grandson. What could she do? The child in her arms didn’t come with a handle, but she loved it dearly nonetheless.

Lady Wu said, “It’s true. While you were asleep earlier, you first gave birth to this son, then woke up and gave birth to this daughter.” Turning to Qian Manxia, she said, “While you were still asleep, your sister-in-law first gave birth to this child. You mustn’t tell anyone; otherwise, people might say your sister-in-law gave birth without knowing it, which would make them think she’s even more simple-minded.”

Qian Manxia, who was most afraid of others calling her sister-in-law a fool, quickly nodded her agreement. Having just turned six and having actually been asleep, she believed her mother’s words without a doubt. She admired Cheng Yue and said, “Sister-in-law, you’re so capable, giving birth to two children all at once!”

Seeing her closest mother-in-law and younger sister-in-law both saying so, Cheng Yue began to believe that she truly did give birth to a son first, followed by a daughter.

The baby girl was tiny and weak, struggling to breastfeed. After trying for a while without success, she began to cry.

Lady Wu handed over the baby boy, “This little guy’s stronger; let him draw the milk out first.”

As soon as the baby boy was cradled in Cheng Yue’s arms, he opened his mouth wide and began to breathe heavily. Despite his small size, he was quite strong. When he couldn’t get any milk at first, he sucked vigorously, causing Cheng Yue so much pain that her eyes reddened. Once he finally drew milk, he began to feed contentedly.

Cheng Yue proudly told Lady Wu, “My son is capable, he managed to get the milk flowing.” After a pause, she added, “Yueyue is also capable, for giving birth to one with a handle.”

Qian Yixiu smiled silently. Was their little mother simple or not? On one hand, she sought credit, yet on the other hand, she really believed she could give birth to a son while sleeping.

Lady Wu also laughed heartily, “Yes, Yueyue is capable. She’s our family’s hero.”

“I like the ones without a handle too,” Cheng Yue said, glancing at the baby girl who had her eyes closed.

“That’s right, daughters are good too. Daughters are a mother’s little warm jacket,” Lady Wu explained as she picked up the baby girl, who still didn’t open her eyes and softly whimpered.

The baby boy had a big appetite, switching from one side to the other. Lady Wu commented, “You have to save some milk for the girl; you can’t let him finish it all by himself.”

Upon hearing this, Cheng Yue laid the baby boy on the bed. He immediately started crying loudly. Lady Wu handed the baby girl to Cheng Yue and then soothed the boy by feeding him warm water with a small spoon, which calmed him down.

After finishing with his water, Lady Wu held him upright and gently patted his back. Turning to Cheng Yue, she advised, “Watch how I do this, Yueyue. After feeding milk, you should hold him like this until he burps before putting him back on the bed. Otherwise, I’m afraid he’ll spit up his milk.”

Cheng Yue responded with an “Oh.”

The baby girl had a small appetite and stopped feeding after just a few mouthfuls. Cheng Yue, having forgotten her mother-in-law’s instruction, directly placed her on the bed. Fortunately, since the baby girl didn’t eat much, she didn’t spit up the milk.

Aware that Cheng Yue would not remember the lesson after just one time, Lady Wu picked up the baby girl and repeated the earlier actions and instructions. In the end, she emphasized, “Remember this now, Yueyue?”

By the time Cheng Yue and her son (daughter) had all fallen asleep, dawn broke. Lady Wu went to the kitchen to prepare some of yesterday’s leftover rice for the puppy that had followed them inside, and then she sent Qian Manxia to the Qian’s Main Courtyard to spread the good news that Manjiang’s wife had given birth to twins of mixed sex.

Before she left, Qian Manxia glanced at the puppy who was eating porridge under the eaves and said, “Why does this dog look so strange? It’s so ugly.”

Lady Wu said, “It came to our house on its own, so whether it’s ugly or not, as long as it’s raised in our home, it can still guard our house. Didn’t those people say that our family was so poor that even dogs would turn up their noses at us? Let’s see if they have anything to say in the future.”

Qian Manxia couldn’t stand the villagers talking down about her family and, hearing her mother’s words, she nodded vigorously.

Qian Yixiu was also shocked by the appearance of the puppy; it was indeed very ugly, looking as if its nose and mouth had been flattened by a punch. She felt she had seen this kind of dog in her previous life but couldn’t remember the breed. She thought that maybe its breed would be more apparent as it grew older.

As soon as Old man Qian and Old woman Qian got the news, they rushed over, with Qian Mandie bouncing along behind them.

As soon as Old woman Qian entered the courtyard, she said loudly, “I’ve come to see my great-grandson.” With that, she walked straight towards the left wing room.

Her loud voice startled the sleeping Cheng Yue, who quickly wrapped her arms around her children and cried, “Don’t take away my children, don’t take away my children.”

Lady Wu had already stepped out of the house to block Old woman Qian’s path, “Manjiang’s wife is fiercely protective of her calves, she won’t even let Auntie Xia get too close to the children. Could you perhaps wait a few days until her emotions have calmed down a bit…?”

This was something that Qian Sangui and Lady Wu had agreed upon after discussing it beforehand, as people may notice over the next few days that the little boy wasn’t born just last night.

The puppy also began jumping up and barking at Old woman Qian.

Old woman Qian’s face fell, “What’s the matter, I have to look at someone else’s face to see my own great-grandson?” She then kicked the puppy and scolded, “Ugly mutt, what are you barking at!”

Lady Wu quickly tried to smooth things over with a smile, “The daughter-in-law is worried that Manjiang’s wife might get upset with you, so I’m giving you a heads up. If she says something unpleasant, please be generous and don’t stoop to her level.”

As they were speaking, Qian Sangui, leaning on his crutch, came to the entrance of the hall and said in a low voice, “Mother, Manjiang’s wife is sick, so her mind isn’t quite like that of normal people. Her milk was already scarce, and if we scare it away, how will the two babies survive?”

Even though Qian Sangui was injured, the old lady still favored this son. Hearing him say this, she hesitated.

Old man Qian scolded, “You old woman, you’re looking for trouble as soon as you arrive, why do you have to go in there? Why don’t you let the third son’s wife bring them out for you to see?”

Old woman Qian’s face wrinkled up, torn between wanting to see her great-grandson for the first time and fearing that she might indeed scare Cheng Yue’s milk away. She grumbled quietly, “Even with good fortune, it’s blessing a fool.” Yet, she still headed toward the hall.

Once the old couple and Qian Mandie were seated in the hall, Lady Wu went in and brought out her granddaughter. Old woman Qian held the little girl and said with disdain, “Oh dear, this girl is so small, probably only weighs a bit over three pounds.”
