Chapter 26: The King’s Cursed Smile

Primrose had never known that someone could be this talentless at smiling.

It was just a damn smile, yet Edmund still couldn’t get it right, even after thirty whole minutes!

A damn half an hour!

At this point, she was starting to wonder if his face muscles were cursed.

Thankfully, salvation arrived in the form of a soldier who informed Edmund that it was time for him to head to the training grounds to oversee the selection of new recruits for Noctvaris’ soldiers.

"Let’s talk again later." Edmund attempted another smile, but instead of looking friendly, he resembled a wolf baring its fangs to terrify a helpless little rabbit. "I’ll work hard to learn how to smile."

[For my wife, I’ll train myself to smile every day!]

Oh, dear gods. Please, no.

If he actually practiced that in front of his soldiers, they might think their king was furious with them instead.

But how could Primrose crush his determination?

"I know you can do it, Your Majesty!" she encouraged, rising from her chair.

Before Edmund could walk away, she plucked a soft-pink Azmeria flower, its layered petals blooming delicately in the sunlight.

"I don’t have much to give you right now, Your Majesty," she said, holding it out to him. "But please, consider this your first gift."

She lifted her fan, hiding half of her face behind it. "In my homeland, the pink Azmeria flower is a symbol of luck." Her voice softened. "That’s why I want you to have it, so that luck will always be on your side."

Actually, Primrose had only given him the flower to reassure him the greenhouse wouldn’t be ruined even if he accidentally damaged a few flowers while walking through it.

Honestly, she still couldn’t wrap her head around his ridiculous logic. Who the hell is afraid of stepping on flowers? The stone pathways were huge, unless he planned on tripping over his own feet and swan-diving into a flowerbed, there was no way he’d destroy anything.

Meanwhile, completely oblivious to her true intentions, Edmund clutched the flower like it was the most sacred treasure in the world.

[M-My wife gave me something!]

[I will cherish this flower for the rest of my life.]

Primrose watched as Edmund stiffly cradled the flower in his palm, looking as if he had just been entrusted with a newborn baby.

Oh no.

He was serious about this, wasn’t he?

Whatever. He’d probably forget about that flower in a few days, or it would end up in the trash once it wilted.

"Thank you for the gift," said Edmund. His tone wasn’t as cold as usual, but it was still a bit stiff.

When Edmund stepped outside the greenhouse, Leah was standing right beside the door. She deliberately pushed out her cleavage and called him softly, "Your Majesty."

Primrose instinctively looked away, her mind jumping to the thought that Edmund might be tempted. After all, men often couldn’t resist when a woman deliberately exposed herself like that.

But to her surprise, his thoughts were not what she expected.

[What’s wrong with her? Isn’t she freezing in clothes like that?]

That was ... unexpected.

If Primrose wore a low-cut dress in front of Edmund, his mind would probably explode as if she were offering fresh meat to a hungry wolf.

She thought he’d react the same way with other women, considering how Lycans were known for their intense lust.

But no, apparently, another woman’s body wasn’t enough to awaken his boner.

A smile tugged at the corner of Primrose’s lips as she watched his reaction, feeling a strange satisfaction. She whispered under her breath, "What a good boy."

Not long after, Leah finally stepped into the greenhouse. As always, she greeted Primrose with a polite smile. "Your Majesty, I heard some noise just a moment ago. Were you and His Majesty having a disagreement?"

Primrose couldn’t help but smile to herself. The little fox seemed to think she had wormed her way into the King and Queen’s relationship, bold enough to ask such a sensitive question.

"Yes, we were arguing just a minute ago," Primrose replied, setting her teacup down and gently pretending to wipe away a nonexistent tear from the corner of her eye. "His Majesty told me he was tired of looking at me, but to keep up appearances for others, he had to call me here."

[His Majesty hates her? Well, of course.]

[I mean, this woman isn’t even that pretty or useful. No wonder His Majesty can’t stand her.]

Not pretty? This bitch really needed to take a long, hard look at herself in the mirror.

[He did look a bit upset when he left, didn’t even acknowledge me! Seems like his mood completely soured after seeing his ugly wife.]

His resting face was just like that, whether he was in a good or bad mood, his expression never changed.

"Lady Leah, I want you to keep this to yourself," Primrose continued, her tone turning serious. "I don’t want His Majesty’s plans to make a good impression in front of others to be ruined if you let anything slip."

"Of course, Your Majesty," Leah promised with a nod. "This secret will be safe with me."

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Primrose made her way out of the greenhouse, planning to rest in her room.

But the soldier standing guard outside the entrance spoke up, "Your Majesty, His Majesty mentioned that a human doctor has been in the palace since this morning. If you wish to see him, you may ask him to come to your room."

A human doctor?

Primrose almost forgot that Edmund had arranged for one! But since she was feeling fine because of his ... magical saliva, the King had told the doctor not to bother her anymore.

Primrose asked, "What’s his name?"

"His name is Silas Hargrove."

"Dr. Hargrove?" Primrose’s eyes immediately brightened at the sound of his name. "Where is he now?"

The soldier was caught off guard by the sudden joy in the queen’s expression. "I can ask him to come to your room right away, Your Majesty."

Primrose gave him a warm smile. "That would be wonderful. Thank you."
