"Huff, huff."

Amy was running, dragging the pig behind her, unable to believe the current situation.

Just moments ago, she had been descending the hill on the outskirts of Brunel Village with four pigs in tow.

Then, out of nowhere, a horde of monsters appeared and attacked them.

Behind them, around ten monsters were in pursuit. When they climbed the hill earlier, there hadn’t been even a shadow of these creatures.

Now, both Harrison and Aurora were nowhere to be seen.

This happened while Jose, Amy, and the village chief were distracted, calming the struggling pigs.

"Move! Quickly, move!"

Jose urgently grabbed Amy, pulling her along. She glanced down at the leash in her hand, tied to the pig.

"Jose, should we let go of the pigs?"

Although she asked, she didn’t want to let them go.

Amy’s face crumpled, tears threatening to fall. Happy House’s food supply was running dangerously low.

If they could bring these pigs back, the group could survive without worrying about food for at least a month.

The limping village chief, Amy holding the pig’s leash with teary eyes, and Jose, gritting his teeth while holding a rifle.

Cherry, Harrison, Ethan, and Nox weren’t there. It was up to Jose to protect them now.

The weight of responsibility bore down heavily on his shoulders.

"Amy, let the pigs go."

"Really... let them go?"

"Yes. And help the village chief."

"Okay."

At Jose’s firm response, Amy bit her lower lip and reluctantly released the pig’s leash.

This mess was a consequence of their own greed. They had insisted on bringing an extra pig, and now, only those responsible for that decision were left behind. It was their own doing.

Amy quickly moved to support the village chief.

Seeing this, Jose loaded his rifle and turned toward the approaching monsters.

Sweat dripped down his tense face. There was no room for error. Not a single mistake was allowed.

He thought back to the life he had led after leaving the Galloway family, scraping by in a foreign land, surviving by dealing in illegal weapons, starting from the very bottom.

Meeting Harrison had been a stroke of luck. It gave him a stable trade and a slightly better life.

Then, he met Cherry, and in this desolate, ruined world, he found a way to keep surviving.

But luck always ran out eventually.

Grasping that luck and turning it into something lasting required his own effort.

Jose had forgotten this. Before the world ended and even now, mere survival hadn’t changed.

This wouldn’t lead to progress. It made him feel unworthy of facing Harrison or Cherry.

Why had he left the Galloway family if this was how it would turn out?

"Do you distrust me because I’m a doctor? Our young sniper, how will you survive in this harsh world with such narrow-minded thinking?"

Nox’s words echoed in his mind. Survival was hard for someone as narrow-minded as him.

"Happy House is me, and my pillars are Ethan, Harrison, and Nox? That’s true, Jose. But you’re missing yourself from the equation. We all know you’re amazing."

Even so, Cherry had a habit of overestimating him.

Unlike Ethan, Harrison, or Nox, Jose hadn’t accomplished anything significant yet.

His mind cooled, sharpening with clarity. His focus intensified. Jose’s icy blue eyes gleamed with a chilling brilliance, sharper than a frozen lake.

Firing a shot would attract more monsters. They had been avoiding using guns to prevent an overwhelming onslaught of creatures. But...

“I just need to be faster than the monsters.”

Fixing his gaze solely on the front, Jose pulled the trigger.

Bang!

Despite being a rifle, the shots roared like those of a machine gun, echoing through the forest.

Ratatatatatata—!

*****

Harrison stood alone with two pigs.

He glanced around, startled, before muttering a low curse.

"Damn it. Where did everyone go?"

The village chief had injured his leg, forcing Jose and Amy to support him.

That left Harrison with the task of leading two pigs, while Aurora had taken the remaining one.

Running away from monsters while dragging pigs wasn’t easy, and at some point, the monsters chasing them had disappeared. His companions were nowhere to be seen either.

Bang!

Ratatatatatata—!

Gunfire echoed faintly in the distance, accompanied by the faint howls of monsters.

Through the undergrowth, Harrison saw birds fluttering skyward and trees crashing to the ground.

Then,

Screeech!

A monstrous cry reverberated.

“Could the others be in that direction?”

Harrison tied the pigs to a tree and readied his crossbow.

Rustle.

Growl.

A wolf emerged from the bushes—a wolf-like monster.

Snarl!

The creature bared its sharp teeth and leapt toward Harrison.

Just as Harrison aimed his crossbow and began to pull the trigger,

Thud.

Something fell from the sky, striking the wolf.

It was a woman, who had jumped down from a branch, stomping on the monster with her boots.

The wolf was slammed into the ground with a sickening thud, the heel of the woman’s boot pressing firmly against its neck.

The monster whimpered, unable to resist as it gasped for air.

She drew her bowstring, aiming directly at the creature.

Whoosh—

Thwack!

The arrow buried itself into the wolf’s head, killing it instantly.

Aurora raised her dirt-covered face, her disheveled hair and sweat-soaked features filled with fear and panic.

"A-attorney... you’re here."

Her hands were trembling violently.

Despite her fear, her movements while killing the wolf had been swift and decisive, as if by instinct.

Her body moved with the grace and skill of a seasoned fighter, though her mind was clearly consumed by fear.

Could Aurora's strange movements be connected to her lost memories?

The immediate concern, however, was the other wolf-like monsters drawn to the sound. Aurora and Harrison quickly stood back-to-back, bracing themselves.

"I lost the kids while running from the monsters. I lost the pigs too... it’s all... all my fault. I was supposed to cover the rear..."

Aurora’s voice was heavy with guilt, on the verge of breaking into tears.

Harrison, speaking in a calm tone, reassured her.

"I was at the front and failed to give proper signals or keep an eye on the surroundings. That’s on me too."

But there wasn’t time to continue the conversation.

The pack of wolf monsters was closing in. Standing back-to-back, they loosed arrows at the approaching beasts.

However, there were too many of them. Facing this many wolves with just bows and crossbows was proving to be overwhelming.

At this point, bullets would have been far more effective than arrows.

Harrison gritted his teeth, trying to think of a solution. A way out... there had to be one.

Just then, footsteps approached from the direction of the village.

Thump, thump, thump.

The sound of synchronized steps, disciplined and measured.

Two armed royal guards appeared alongside Nikolai, moving swiftly to form a protective line around Harrison and Aurora.

Kneeling on one knee, Nikolai aimed at the monsters and shouted to the guards.

"Fire at the front!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Bang! Bang!

Gunfire echoed through the forested hillside, so loud it seemed to invite more monsters from afar.

And as expected...

"Graaaahhh!"

"Kraang!"

More monsters, previously passing by, turned back and began converging on their location. It seemed likely they were descending from Hondurf.

Unfazed, the royal guards quickly regrouped and aimed their weapons at the incoming horde.

However, the number of monsters gathering was substantial.

"Everyone, prepare to fire!"

The sound of bullets being loaded rang out in unison at Nikolai’s command.

Just as Nikolai opened his mouth to shout, "Fire!", gunfire erupted from an unexpected direction.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Bullets from an unknown source pierced the heads of the surrounding monsters with unerring precision.

Ratatatatatata—!

The rapid firing, resembling that of a machine gun, decimated the remaining monsters in an instant.

Even as they watched, it was hard to believe their eyes. The bullets struck with an accuracy and speed that seemed almost unreal.

Amidst the fallen monsters, three figures emerged.

One was a sharp-eyed girl with jet-black hair, supporting an elderly man. Another was a young man with pink hair, scanning the surroundings with a rifle at the ready.

The young man’s appearance was striking. His clothes were torn, and his body was smeared with green, slimy residue, but his refined beauty shone through nonetheless.

His eyes, however, were a stark contrast to his delicate features. They gleamed with a ferocity that captured attention, making it impossible to look away.

"My goodness. Is that young man the one who shot like that? How could he achieve such speed and accuracy with a rifle?"

One of the royal guards muttered in disbelief.

There were about ten monsters left, but the guards didn’t even need to step in.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Jose killed five monsters with his rifle. When he ran out of bullets, he tossed the rifle to the ground and drew a revolver from his hip holster.

He quickly loaded the revolver and shot two more monsters approaching from behind, then stabbed a serpent-like creature in the eye with a dagger before blowing its head off with a single ➤ NоvеⅠight ➤ (Read more on our source) shot.

As another serpent lunged at him from the opposite side, Jose flicked his dagger through the air. The blade struck the snake squarely between the eyes, killing it instantly.

Amy, who had handed the village chief over to Nikolai, leaped into the air with astonishing agility.

She landed on the shoulder of a bear-sized monster, plunging her dagger deep into its head.

Thud!

The last ten monsters collapsed to the ground.

Amy flipped midair and landed gracefully, raising her head just as Aurora began clapping.

Watching Jose’s remarkable shooting, Nikolai couldn’t contain his curiosity.

"I can’t believe what I just saw. That’s a shooting skill I’ve never witnessed before. Where did you learn that? Sir Ethan? He’s the only person I’ve seen with such unique techniques."

"I’m self-taught."

"Where did you get that gun? You were handling a rifle like a machine gun."

"It’s a rifle. I’m just good with firearms. As for the revolver, it’s customized. If you’re curious, take a look."

Jose briefly replied, tossing his revolver toward Nikolai.

Watching this, Harrison suddenly remembered Cherry’s words: "Jose is a genius when it comes to handling weapons, don’t you think? You must have noticed, Harrison."

"I knew you were skilled with weapons, but I didn’t expect this level of expertise."

Harrison’s praise brought a small smile to Jose’s lips.

Though he still had a youthful air, his eyes were steady and resolute, exuding a maturity that hadn’t been there before.

"I want to be one of the pillars too. Acting like a child won’t help me protect anyone."
