Chapter 432: Permission to marry (2)

"That’s your future father-in-law. It’s not too late if you want to leave Annalise here and find another woman when we get home," Michael said in a hushed tone. Annalise always appeared to hear everything so her scary father might be the same way.

"Allow me," Logan said and then proceeded to hit Michael over the back of his head. "You idiot. All Rafael has to do is charm the man. Look at how much the wife is in love with Rafael for a son-in-law. Honestly, it didn’t seem like if Rafael came around, Annalise would be getting married. Oh wait, there was Thomas."

"I think that Rafael got in the way of those two becoming a couple. I mean, it all made sense. Best friends who grew up together and he dropped everything to follow her somewhere he could have died. It would have made a good story all the women in the kingdom would want to read. I mean," Michael said, panicked because of Rafael staring at him. "A good story for a child."

"The way you and Annalise came together was more exciting. More romantic," he added.

"Stop talking," Logan advised Michael.

"I’m trying to fix my mistake here. Rafael is the perfect man for Annalise. Oops," Michael clamped his hand over his mouth.

"You mean my daughter is the perfect woman for him? I’m tired of the three of you whispering. If you have something to say and it concerns my daughter, speak out loud. What’s the little man have to say?" Phillip asked, folding his arms as he looked down at Michael.

Phillip wasn’t fond of Michael’s height. It would have been more disappointing if Annalise brought home a man like Michael.

Phillip looked away from Michael to inspect Rafael again. He looked from Rafael’s head down to his toes and then back up, letting out a grunting noise when he was finished.

Michael moved close to Logan and whispered, "I think that means he approves of Rafael."

"I think it means he’s happy that we are not his son-in-law," said Logan.

"No one is my son-in-law until I see a ring," Phillip said. No one was going to fill his little girl’s ears with marriage and there would not be a ring. A good ring that he approved of.

"I have a ring. I want to speak to you alone about marriage," Rafael said, finding now to be a good time since marriage came up. "I plan to ask Annalise to marry me and I want your blessing first."

Phillip was silent at first, thinking over his answer. "Show me the ring and then we’ll have a better talk."

Ezra leaned up on the wall of one of the homes the knights were currently using. When he heard that Phillip was going to sleep with the knights, he came here to enjoy the show. That and Celine said that he was to keep an eye on Phillip so it seemed that instead of spending the next few nights in his own home, he would be here around men. Again.

"Why don’t you go off on a nice walk with him to tell him what you expect out of him as a husband to your daughter and then you see the ring?" Ezra suggested.

To Ezra, wanting to see the ring first was like Phillip already made up his mind Rafael would become Annalise’s husband.

"Why don’t you find something better to do with your time because I have much to talk about how you kept an eye on Annalise when she was away?" Phillip replied, angry with Ezra as much as he was at the sight of knights.

"I would love to hide from you but Celine sent me here so we both know that I can’t leave. Go on with questioning your future son-in-law. Here he comes with the ring," Ezra said, turning Phillip’s attention back to Rafael.

"I had the ring made for her when we returned to my manor," Rafael said as he handed the small box over to Phillip for him to open himself.

Rafael hoped this wasn’t a moment that Phillip would take the ring and toss it somewhere or take the ring and never want to give it back because it was the only ring he had prepared for Annalise. He thought she would like it so there wasn’t a need for a backup.

Phillip opened the box he was tempted to throw away and found a beautiful ring neatly tucked away. At first glance, he knew that Rafael must have spent good money on the ring and found someone with good talent to make it.

"Part of it is made from a sword melted down. Something I thought Annalise would enjoy," said Rafael. He couldn’t get the diamond he paid a hefty price for to be made into a sword, something he was thankful for, but he had suggested using an old sword which was meant to be tossed away to be used for some parts.

"You melted down a sword? Annalise will-"

"It is an old sword meant to be melted down for something else. I will let her know that it was not a good sword with some more life to it," Rafael interjected.

He thought it all out to know Annalise would cry if a good sword was melted just for the sake of a ring.

Phillip nodded his head, impressed that Rafael thought ahead. "It is a beautiful ring. You’ve impressed me that you didn’t make a boring ring simply because my daughter isn’t into something like this. I don’t care how much my little girl isn’t like other women. You better spoil her as you would with anyone else. I don’t need to have a talk with you about marriage," he said, handing the ring back to Rafael.

Phillip couldn’t object any more than he already did in the past. As Celine said, they had given their blessing in the past when Annalise left for the second time. Even if he wanted to object, Celine, Celeste, and Annalise would not care for what he had to say.

It was hard to admit, but Rafael was treating Annalise well. He was still going to think that Rafael stole his little girl from him, but that was a rant for Celine’s ears.

"Treat her well," said Phillip.

"That’s it? No treat her well or I will kill you. Was the ring that good to forget about a threat?" Ezra asked, approaching Rafael to get a good look at the ring.

The Phillip that Ezra knew would have taken Rafael off for a trip to challenge him and Rafael might not have returned in one piece.

"It’s A nice ring, but this isn’t like you," said Ezra.

"This is Annalise we’re talking about. If he tries to hurt my daughter, she’ll hurt him because I can get near him. It’s why I worked so hard to train my daughter. Remember that she will gut you alive if you play with her and I will help her hide the remains," Phillip warned Rafael.

He never had any reason to travel away from home, but he would to help Annalise kill Rafael for not being a good husband to her.

"There is the Phillip that I know," Ezra said, feeling like it had all gone back to normal. Now Celine would be happy to know that Rafael asked for permission to marry Annalise.
