The Knight's Mysterious Maid-Chapter 403: Reunion (3)
Chapter 403: Reunion (3)
"I’m tired of looking up at you. You must stop growing before you can no longer walk through doors like everyone else. Come get a drink," Edgar said, turning around to go back to his carriage. "Don’t worry, there isn’t one that will get you drunk. Tie your horse to my carriage and I’ll drop you off."
Edgar knew of Rafael’s dislike for getting drunk so he prepared a bottle Rafael would enjoy.
"I don’t have time to go anywhere for a drink," Rafael said as Annalise was still awaiting him.
"Rafael, it offends me that you don’t think my carriage has drinks. It is only when Alessandra is riding around with me that it’s nowhere in sight. She has already caused me to get rid of my cigars. I am not throwing out my drinks. Luckily, she can handle her drinks and it is only now that she is pregnant that I promised to not drink along with her," said Edgar.
"So, you are having a drink with me even though there is no alcohol so you can get to drink something out of her sight?" Rafael asked, leading his horse to the carriage so he could tie it.
"You make it sound like I am doing something bad. I should welcome my friend to this town with a drink. You’re going to need it with all the fools here. I might move soon. Take Alessandra somewhere peaceful to enjoy this time," Edgar said as the people here would only become pests once it was known that there was another Collins on the way.
His own family would become a pain in the ass and considering the only Collins he cared for at the moment was the woman sitting at home painting up his estate and the child inside of her, he wanted to get far away from the others. They would see Alessandra when the child was born or perhaps whenever their child was getting married. Or never.
The last one sounded the best to Edgar. He didn’t need certain people’s stupidity to rub off on his child and since there was a large fortune to be inherited, he had to be wary of those coming around now. To make sure that his child got to enjoy their childhood without realising how greedy people are at a young age, he was going to be more distant than ever.
Thankfully, Alessandra had found a group of friends who might have children he could stomach in the future. He was not yet sure if he wanted to be around the future prince or princess because then he would have to be around their annoying father Tobias.
Rafael looked to the front of Edgar’s carriage to the driver he had not seen before. He was used to seeing a man named Timothy. Someone Edgar came across long ago and was one of the few people Edgar trusted to drive him around.
"I’m sorry about what happened to Timothy," Rafael said.
Edgar was someone who wasn’t very social but when he liked you, he cared for you and tried to keep you safe. It was unfortunate that someone close to him died over jealousy.
"He’s been put to rest near some relatives of mine. It’s pissed off a few of the living relatives but I’ve been reminding them that I wouldn’t be bothered with their complaints if they were dead. I will continue to send his pay to his family since he was taking care of them. It’s the least I can do. Sometimes it makes me want to put my mother in a cell again," said Edgar since she was the reason someone died.
Rafael stopped walking, startled by this because Edgar hadn’t shared this with him during the time they were sending letters. He was curious, but at the same time, Rafael did not want to know much about what Edgar did with his mother. It would make running into Priscilla more odd than it normally was.
Rafael tied the reins of the horse to the side of the carriage so it would walk along as the carriage moved. They weren’t far away from the home he was using for the time being. He then joined Edgar inside the warm carriage.
"I am moving out of the manor soon and going near the border. I am looking to build a new town there so it might be a good place for you to move with the duchess," Rafael suggested as it meant they would be closer to each other and would not have to rely on letters to talk.
"For a while, there won’t be many people there and I am always interested in getting more land to build another home. I will think about it. Once it is certain that no one will be fighting at the border anymore. Look at you starting a town and marrying a princess. What a surprise," Edgar mused.
He always thought Rafael would find a woman during his time out protecting the kingdom and bring her back to the manor to settle down for a quiet life. Not all of this with a truce, arguing with the court, and going into the palace which Rafael grew to hate as he got older.
"She is not a princess. She does not call herself one. I will make sure that no one fights at the border whether I am there or not. We both aim to make it safe. It’ll take some time for us to get far with building the town so you and the duchess could move elsewhere before then," Rafael said.
Edgar leaned back against the seat. He trusted that Rafael could lower the fights the border normally had and build up a new town, but as of right now, Annalise and Rafael would encounter some problems Edgar did not want to be bothered by.
Edgar was interested in going where no one was familiar with him or planning to build gates to keep anyone out of his next home. If he didn’t move to the town Rafael was speaking of in the future, he would still get a home there to visit sometimes.
Rafael looked out the window at the homes they were passing. "Did Tobias reward you for your efforts to make the kingdom safe? You found who was taking women."
"He wants to reward me but as usual, some men are trying to act like the court was the one to solve the case. I don’t care that I am not rewarded, and they are arguing over who gets picked. I hope that idiot doesn’t give me something else to do for the kingdom," Edgar said, tapping his fingers on the door.
Edgar had not wanted the task given to him which was to find the missing young women, but he did it and that was all over now. Now there shouldn’t be something for him to do when the palace was full of so many men in the court who should know how to help the kingdom.
This was his first child and for every growth he wanted to be near Alessandra to see what had changed.
The king and queen were finally blessed with a child and Edgar loved that for Hazel, but he couldn’t bring help to Tobias at this time when his wife needed him. Any more tasks given to him would be turned down.
However, Edgar would help Rafael with whatever he needed since they were not able to see each other. Rafael never bothered him as much as Tobias would so he was open to helping Rafael more.
"Do you want me to pour you a drink? I don’t do this for just anyone," Edgar said, picking up the bottle that lacked alcohol.
"How can I turn down the great Edgar Collins pouring me a drink? It might help get rid of my worries about taking Annalise to the palace. I fucking hate that place and if the former queen will be around, it will be worse. Though I would love to see Annalise shut that woman up. I keep feeling that I am about to see that I lack patience more than ever," Rafael said as he wouldn’t be able to sit still when someone spoke rudely to Annalise.
"I won’t get angry with you if you find the tallest tower in the palace and throw someone out of it. I’m due for a good laugh. Amuse me," Edgar said, encouraging Rafael to fight so he could have something to laugh at.
It was always him being the one dealing with fools and trying not to kill them. He wanted to see Rafael’s patience snap or better yet, Annalise attacking someone. Edgar looked forward to being entertained for the next few days. There were a few men he hoped Annalise would clash with and scare them.
"I’m not here to amuse you, Edgar. If there is someone you want to see falling from a window, you should do it yourself. I’m starting to feel worried about Annalise meeting with you. The two of you might encourage each other to scare someone else," Rafael said, realising what the town was soon about to face from Annalise and Edgar being in the same place.
