The Knight's Mysterious Maid-Chapter 40: Caught (1)
Chapter 40: Caught (1)
Giselle sighed since Delilah was being difficult by not moving. "Do I honestly need to walk around you when you can simply move? You almost knocked me over when you came out so the least you could do is move. Or don’t tell me you don’t want me to meet with Rafael?"
"This is not the way to get his attention," Delilah softly spoke. Rafael was not a man who would be interested in Giselle coming around him with her bosom almost exposed.
"Then why are you so worried? You have your ways of capturing your husband and I have my ways. You cannot continue to be selfish by not letting other ladies have a bit of time with him. It seems to me that you are also wasting your time. You need to step aside and allow others to try their hand at getting him. You hardly have a chance with him. You are like a sister," Giselle pointed at Delilah. "A woman who he shall never lust. While I have a chance. Knowing him forever really hurt you."
Delilah grabbed a handful of her dress. Not only was Rafael calling her sister but now the other ladies might start doing it. She knew Giselle was just taunting her out of jealousy that she had always been close to Rafael when for a long time Giselle struggled to get near.
Delilah stepped to the give to give space for Giselle to walk by. "Go on. I am not worried about you. You were always the girl forgotten in the back while everyone else was admired. You needed to resort to showing off your body to get attention. You’ve unknowingly labelled yourself a woman that men would keep as a mistress and-"
"You!" Giselle exclaimed, her hand raised to slap Delilah, but she didn’t do it because her father would be angry with her for hitting someone with a background like Delilah’s. There was a distance between them when it came to wealth.
"And a woman they would never introduce as their wife to their parents. Regardless of how men lust after your body and whisper sweet words, they want a wife who is a lady. A lady who can act and dress with class. I am not worried about you catching Rafael’s attention. I worry if you shall ever have a ring on your finger and will be able to call yourself someone’s wife. Perhaps my words have been too harsh. There is still hope for you," Delilah smiled.
"I am sure there will be some man who will be able to hide that he is only after your body you flaunt around so much and place a ring on your finger so he could have you as much as he likes. Oh, but then you would have to fear when he grows tired of your body and finds a new woman to lust after. That is why you shouldn’t rely on just your body. Have a bit of personality for men to like you. I suggest you take down your hand," Delilah said, looking at the hand Giselle held in the air.
Giselle was in no position to try slapping her or pulling her hair. There were only a few women who could attempt it and get away with it. Now that Delilah was looking for a husband, a single scratch on her would have her mother ruining the life of the person who did it.
"Ha!" Giselle scoffed, taking down her hand. She ran her fingers through her dark hair to calm her anger. "That was a good attempt to rile me up, Delilah. You should not have said that, because now I will work twice as hard to take him from you. Let me tell you why I have a better chance of being his wife than you," she said, stepping forward to whisper. "I have warmed his bed before."
Delilah’s eyes widened upon hearing that Giselle had been intimate with Rafael. She stepped back, inspecting Giselle to see if she was lying, but she couldn’t tell. She would like to believe that Giselle was only doing this to tease her and had not ruined her purity just to get ahead of the other ladies.
"You have spoiled yourself if that is true. Should you marry another man, you will not bleed, and he will send you away. Warming his bed is nothing to cheer about when he has not decided to marry you. I pity you," Delilah said, walking around Giselle to leave instead of going to the training grounds.
She hurried to get far away from Rafael’s study so she would not have to listen to what was being said between him and Giselle. Delilah stopped and leaned herself against a wall. She could not judge Giselle since she had made the offer for Rafael to bed her not long ago. It was a desperate attempt that failed miserably.
Delilah thought of leaving so she could hide how sad she was, but now her thoughts went back to the dress and how she wanted it for herself. If she could not get her hands on it to keep it as her own, it should be destroyed. The dress suited someone of her status, not a maid who would fool someone into thinking she was a refined lady when she wore it.
Delilah didn’t want Annalise to go around talking about getting a dress from Rafael.
"You there!" Delilah called to a maid sweeping the floor near the front door. "Come to me."
Laura was happy to hear the young lady call out to her. With Beatrice gone and Rafael’s maid not picked yet, Delilah was the next best person for her to serve. Everyone knew that there was a high chance for Delilah to become the lady of the house, so it was smart to try serving her now. She would remember those who were loyal to her before she became Rafael’s wife.
Laura dropped the broom she was using on the floor and rushed to be by Delilah’s side. "Yes, my lady."
Delilah thought that by the way the maid had already addressed her that this one would be of good use. "Do you know where a maid named Annalise resides?"
Laura frowned, taken aback by the fact that Delilah only wanted to speak about Annalise. Maybe she wanted her fired? "She lives here in the servant quarters. She is not from town, so she has nowhere else to stay," she answered.
"Of course, she would be staying here. In her room, there should be a white dress that looks like something she could not afford. Bring it to me, and I shall pay you whatever you want," said Delilah.
Laura hesitated to give a response. If it was anything else, she would happily do it, but this concerned Annalise. After the incident with Annalise putting a snake in that room, she didn’t want to think about what Annalise would do if she came to know that she had stolen from her. She could do it if Annalise was nowhere on the estate, but she was, so there was a chance to be caught.
Laura knew if she were to be caught taking the dress, Delilah would not help her. "Unfortunately, getting the dress is something I cannot do. Going after Annalise or something that belongs to her, is difficult-"
"I shall fill your hands with gold coins so much that many will drop to the floor. I want that dress," said Delilah.
