Chapter 392: A day with women (2)

"It scares me how nervous you look, Annalise. It is only a party with women you are familiar with. If that look is because you miss my son, you’ll be back with him in a few hours. I’ve prepared a lot so you won’t miss him. I’ve even told River not to return until it is time for your carriage to return," said Beatrice.

"It is not from me missing Rafael. I am nervous because I have never sat down to do whatever you have planned today. I am still learning the rules for how to act in a group. I don’t want to be the odd one here today," Annalise said, sharing her fear.

"There isn’t anyone here to judge you or think that you ruined the party. There are no rules here for how anyone should act. Though I must admit I don’t want to see another young lady hold up her dress my way. Once was enough," Beatrice said, tapping Annalise’s hands to help calm her.

Annalise wanted to hear more about the young woman who held up her skirt. "You must tell me what happened. Was it at a party where dresses were not to be lifted? Were there drinks involved?"

"There were a few drinks but the men had stronger drinks. I don’t know how she got her hand on the stronger drinks. I was speaking to a friend and the next thing I saw was a dress lifted before me. Maybe I am getting too old to remember all the trends. At least give me a warning before dresses go up," said Beatrice.

All Beatrice wanted to do was go over to the drunk young woman, pull down her dress and escort her home. She later learned that the embarrassment had all started over pressure from other young women to do a dare.

"I will try my best to give you a warning," Annalise joked.

"Thank you. Did Rafael also get you ribbons? The purple looks pretty in your hair. That boy is spoiling you. It looks like it is coming undone. Let me tie it better for you," Beatrice said, going behind Annalise. "Do you mind coming down a little?"

"Yes," Annalise replied, lowering herself to help Beatrice. "I have been thinking of what to get him. I have a little bit of my money left over to spend on him, but he won’t tell me what he wants."

"Let me guess. He said he didn’t need anything. That you are all he needs."

Annalise turned her head but then remembered what Beatrice was doing. "Sorry. He does turn down my offer to get him a gift. I still want to do it so I wouldn’t be the only one receiving something. Being in his life just isn’t enough of a gift."

"I understand. River used to be the same way with not wanting me to spend money, but when he came home from wherever the palace sent him, he came with a bag of gifts. Just buy what feels right in your heart and if you ever need help, I am always here to go looking around with you. I have started going out now that Travis isn’t around," Beatrice said.

She had gone back to travelling around the town as she used to do before Travis came to disrupt her life. These days she was dealing with a bit of conflict with Rachel over Delilah. For some reason, the family still believed Delilah had a chance with Rafael and were trying to pressure her into it.

Beatrice couldn’t wait for the day she could flaunt Annalise to get rid of the delusional fools who would not listen to the fact they would not be marrying her son. At the same time, Beatrice didn’t want to waste Annalise’s time by having her around women she didn’t care for.

There were a few women Beatrice liked that she would like to introduce Annalise to one day, but she didn’t invite them today since she didn’t want Annalise around strangers.

"All done. Looks like our final guest has arrived," Beatrice said, looking out the window at a carriage coming in. "After we welcome Giselle, we can go back to the others. They should be finished looking around."

Annalise waited by the window with Beatrice, looking on as Giselle got out of her carriage and came up to the door. Annalise was the one to move to open the door.

Beatrice gave her butler and servants the day off so it would only be the women and the guards walking around outside here today. The food and drinks were already placed for them to serve themselves and with no one watching them, they were to act as they wanted.

"Welcome," Annalise said, greeting Giselle when she reached the door.

Giselle clapped her hands, excited to be invited. The invitation came as a surprise. It was so surprising that her uncle did not believe it when she showed it to him. The normally cheap man sent her off to buy a new dress and coat for the occasion.

"Thank you for inviting me," Giselle said, going straight to hug Annalise and then Beatrice.

With the season almost over, she was worried that she wouldn’t have gotten to do something exciting before it ended. Now she could write down coming to Beatrice Callahan’s home as a great ending. Though it would have been great if she had been able to snag a husband.

"Thank you for coming. You look lovely," Beatrice said, enjoying the blue dress Giselle picked. "I hoped the invitation wasn’t sent too late. It was not long ago that I decided I wanted to do the party today." freeweɓnøvel.com

"Oh no. It was fine," Giselle said, pretending like it hadn’t caused her to get dressed and go looking around for the perfect dress.

"What are we doing? Come inside quickly since you’ve already taken off your coat. I don’t want you to freeze at the door," Beatrice said, making way for Giselle to enter. "Everyone is already inside looking around. I will put away your coat. I hope you won’t mind that there are no maids here today. We’ll be doing everything ourselves."

"That is fine with me," Giselle replied, happy to hear this since it meant nothing about what was said or done here today would be shared around the town.

"Annalise, you can take Giselle ahead while I put away her coat. I will be there shortly," Beatrice said as she closed the door.

Annalise nodded her head, agreeing to it. "Follow me."

"What is this party about? Is it for a birthday, engagement, or just women sitting around talking? The invitation wasn’t exactly clear about the purpose. I’m now overthinking that I might have needed a gift," said Giselle.

"I think it is the last one since my birthday has long gone and I am not engaged. At least I don’t think I am. Do men do that in your sleep and everyone around you can suddenly tell?" Annalise asked, looking at her hands. There wasn’t a ring on any finger.

"It would be odd for anyone to do that," Giselle answered. She wanted to be wide awake when someone put a ring on her finger.
