Chapter 34: Nothing money can fix (1)

"This is turning out to be a party of my liking. Women, drinks, and someone who doesn’t seem to be breathing," Logan said, rushing to see if the person was alive or not.

Rafael followed behind Logan and looked at his door. He didn’t believe in coincidences that someone just so happened to be lying in front of his study where valuable information was kept.

Logan bent down to turn the person over so he could see who they were. "He looks like one of the men from Connor’s group. What games are they up to now?" He asked.

"He must have been after something inside my study. Watch him," Rafael said as he needed to check his study. He got his key to unlock the door. The first time he turned the doorknob, it didn’t open like he was using the wrong key. When he tried a second time, the door opened. ’Someone messed with it.’

Rafael entered the room with his guard up and looked around for anything suspicious. At first glance there didn’t seem to be anything out of place so he turned around to check on the man lying on the floor. "Connor must have put him up to check my study. He’s up to something to get back at me," he said, referring to him taking Annalise’s side when she had hit Connor with a rag.

Logan looked up at Rafael. "What exactly is going on between the two of you? There has always been some animosity between the two of you, but these days the two of you seem ready to fight. I didn’t miss that your knuckles are red after coming back from looking for Connor. Did the two of you fight?"

"I found him trying to force himself on Annalise, the maid we were-’

"What!" Logan practically jumped up when he heard the news. "When did he? Is that why she isn’t working? Wait until I get my hands on that fucker-"

"I have already dealt with it and right now we have someone else to deal with. Drag him to the cells and lock him up until he wakes up," Rafael said.

Logan looked down at the man who had a good size to him and then up at Rafael. "You said what?"

"You are going to take him to a cell. I don’t care how you do it, but do it before anyone sees it. I am not in the mood to deal with anyone’s questions. We will continue our conversation another time-"

"And where the hell are you going instead of helping me lift him?" Logan asked as this was a job for two men. He didn’t want to be dragging around a man that was almost dead on his own. Quite frankly, he would like to leave to see Connor now to have a word with him.

"To my party," Rafael replied with what should have been obvious to Logan. It wouldn’t be long before his mother would find Delilah alone and then come searching for him to drag him back.

"I cannot believe you," Logan muttered as he watched Rafael close his study door and lock it with the key. "You do not want to be at the party. Why not help me put him in a cell and then you can go back to hiding?"

"No," Rafael replied, placing the key back into his pocket. Tonight was not a night he could hide from his mother, so he would rather get it over with and then send her home. He was also looking to spend some time with the men who were letting loose for the night.

Rafael liked to see the knights enjoying themselves after their travels. They needed this moment of peace before they would fall back into intense training or suddenly be ordered to deal with enemies. The guards at the border were already requesting that the knights come to join them. Rafael denied the request since the knights needed a break and Tobias should send his army to help the border.

"Young master," Edwin greeted Rafael at the bottom of the stairs. "Mr. Bailey wished to speak with you. I placed him in the small library."

"Thank you, Edwin. Do me a favor and check the servant’s quarters to see how a maid named Annalise is doing. Tomorrow, if you have time, please send someone to buy her a new dress. And a blanket," Rafael added as he remembered her story about someone putting dirt on her blanket. "Does she have a hard time getting along with the other maids?"

"All the maids tend to have their own group of friends they get along with. I see her spending time with a few. Is there something I need to look into?" Edwin asked. It wasn’t like Rafael to ask about a specific maid. What he was told happened with Annalise and Connor must have made Rafael worried for the poor girl.

"No. I was only curious," Rafael replied. All that was important was repaying Annalise with a new dress since the one she wore tonight was ruined. "Excuse me," he said, walking away to get to the library to speak with Connor’s father.

John Bailey was a man Rafael had a good relationship with over the years, but Rafael was growing tired of John always helping Connor escape being punished for his actions. Rafael had no doubt that John would try to cover up what Connor did tonight to save his ass, but Rafael wasn’t going to let it slide this time.

"Mr. Bailey," Rafael said when he entered the library. He found John with a book open, reading it.

"Rafael Callahan," John said, putting the book back where he found it. "It is all you hear when you walk through the town. Everyone is happy to have you back. What trouble has my son caused now?"

"He tried to take advantage of one of my maids. He should be seeing a doctor right now because I punched him," Rafael answered. He watched John ball up his hand out of anger before letting it go.

"Is this one he has a relationship with because-"

"Do not go there with me," Rafael said, stopping John before he could insinuate something that wasn’t true. "He sought her out because she rejected his advances. I let him slack off and have his fun with women who wish to sleep with him, but I draw the line at him attacking my servants. I am looking into how many other maids he has been inappropriate with."

John couldn’t let his son be known as someone who forced himself on women. That would not only affect Connor, but himself. "Look, there is no reason for you to go through all of this trouble. Let me deal with my son and have him apologise to you."

"I am not the one he tried to force himself upon. An apology would need to go to the maid, but if I were her, I wouldn’t want to see his face. This is nothing an apology he won’t mean can fix. Your son will no longer be under the Callahan knights."

"I will inform the town guards of what he has done and let them deal with it. Should you meddle and have him released, he will be sent to the palace to be with the other knights. Should he come around the maid, I shall see to it you never have the joy of holding a legitimate grandchild," said Rafael.
