Chapter 299: Unwelcomed arrival (1)

A day later, Rafael and the Callahan knights arrived at the border where the border guards were set up to stop outsiders from entering the kingdom.

As expected, they weren’t given a warm welcome even when Rafael showed that he was sent by the king to take over. Rafael paid no attention to the guard’s cold reaction to seeing him here and instead led the knights to find somewhere to set up camp.

"If I were them, I would be happy to see us. They are finally getting the extra help they requested, but they aren’t happy to see us. Like we have forgotten they sent some of their men to try to convince us to come here," Logan said, keeping an eye on the guards.

He wouldn’t put past the guards to try picking a fight with one of the knights. Rafael was normally their target as they attempted to make him act out of character.

"News of the missing guards must have reached them already. Their captain still thinks that Rafael killed his men. We should have killed them," Christian said, regretting that he didn’t. He would feel less annoyed if their claims were true and he had the satisfaction of killing a few guards.

"Pay no attention to them," Rafael said as he tied his horse to a tree. He would be stuck here forever if he paid attention to the guards. "Focus on putting up our tents and gathering a group to ride out to inspect the land. We also need some knights on patrol of our camp. I will send home anyone who gets involved in an unnecessary fight."

"I will try my best not to fight right now. We’ve got annoying company," Logan said, getting down from his horse as Martin approached them.

"Easy there. We’re all on the same side," Martin said, stopping at more than three arm’s length from where Rafael stood. He wouldn’t be able to get any closer to Rafael since Rafael’s little dogs were blocking the path. "It is good to finally have the knights here. After I spent my good time requesting that you join us, you show up only after the king makes the order. Wagging your tail as usual."

"Wouldn’t that mean that you are also a dog? We all move when the king gives us a command," Christian said, shaking his head at Martin’s stupidity.

"Before you say something that you will regret, remember that the king has placed Rafael in charge of you. Would you like to see the royal decree?" Logan asked. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

Martin wished the two men would shut up and let Rafael answer. He had a bone to pick with Rafael and he didn’t care if the king sent Rafael to order him around. First Rafael got rid of Connor and then he killed his guards.

In his opinion, the king was being careless by putting his friends in these positions instead of calling upon the right people. Martin had been doing just fine in leading the men defending the border. He only called upon the knights to get extra help, but he expected to still be in charge.

"We are unpacking and putting up our tents. Is there something important you need to talk about? Have there been any attacks?" Rafael asked, deciding to get his conversation with Martin over with.

As much as Rafael disliked Martin, he knew now was not the time to let an old feud get in the way of dealing with what Tobias sent him here to do. Martin had knowledge about what happened during the days the knights were travelling here. Rafael needed to know if there were any movements or deaths meant to be placed in a report and sent to the palace.

Martin licked his lips and then smiled. "You’re really good at acting like a saviour. Tell me, when are you going to be honest and admit to having something to do with my missing guards? You have no idea how angry I was to have to return here without any answers, but luck is on my side to send you here."

"We have a little bit of a problem. See, I can stomach you being here, but the men aren’t happy to see you. They believe that you had something to do with the death of their friends- Hey!" Martin yelled to Rafael when he started to walk away.

Martin was ready to follow him, but the unanimous sound of the knights taking out their swords stopped him from walking any further. He looked over his shoulder at his guards gathering to defend him.

If word reached the king that a fight happened the first day the knights arrived, they would all be scolded. Martin wished he could tell Rafael and his knights to leave. To claim that he no longer needed their help.

It would kill him to have to listen to anyone speaking of Rafael coming to the border and finally ending the war. Martin was already sick and tired of hearing the daily praises Rafael received.

Rather than fight with Rafael, he was going to use him. Pretend to put their differences aside to work with Rafael and see to it that his name was at the top of the list of the people who got rid of the barbarians once and for all. He couldn’t let Rafael have all the glory.

After this, he hoped the king would grant his request to become a knight so he could get far away from this land. He had long grown tired of being situated here at a place where all he did was try to hunt down barbarians. Martin wanted to be closer to a town so he could tell stories about himself and listen to the people praise him.

"That was rude of me. We’re off to a bad start but can you blame me? I really need to find out what happened to the people I sent to you. We can figure that out another day. Right now, it is important that I report what we observed. I think they are preparing for an attack," Martin revealed, knowing Rafael simply could not ignore this.

As he expected, Rafael stopped and turned around. Martin lowered his head to hide his growing smile. It was like he had control of a wild dog. Knowing just what to say to make it stop.

"Normally, there would be a few of them riding around to intimidate us so we don’t try moving in, but they are not there. It is unusual. Using binoculars, we noticed large groups of them gathering. Your men need to settle in quickly and then work with us to come up with a plan. I will order my men not to bother your knights," Martin said and then he left to have a word with men he trusted.

Rafael was now on his territory. Martin didn’t care what the king said. He was in control of this land as captain. No one was going to steal his name going down in history. From this point on, he would keep a close eye on Rafael.

"He must take us for fools. He’s plotting something," Logan noted.

Rafael knew that it was unlikely Martin would be mature and put their differences to the side to do as he was ordered, but he didn’t care about what foolish plan Martin was concocting inside his head.

What mattered was getting the information he needed to have his knights riding out tomorrow morning to start what they came here to do.
