Chapter 276: Last day (3)

Annalise spent the day with Beatrice and Rafael until River returned. River and Rafael went off to talk, so Beatrice ended her picnic to do the last of her packing since they would soon need to leave.

Annalise used everyone being busy as her chance to walk around the house to see if she spotted anyone, but she had no luck. She didn’t know if they were around and simply hiding well or if they left to meet with others.

Annalise spent the rest of her day keeping watch as she packed, but there was still no sighting of her people. Soon evening came and it was time to leave to go back to the manor.

"Stick close to the carriages," River ordered Logan.

The knights were riding on horses just as they travelled here while everyone else was using the carriages.

Annalise walked with her bag to the carriage she was sharing with Rafael. The trip was short, yet she had many experiences here that she would never forget. Had she not joined Rafael on this trip, she doubted their relationship would have come this far.

When Annalise neared the carriage, Logan took the bag from her to place on the carriage.

"Thank you," Annalise thanked him, and stood back to give him space to put it with the others.

"It’s what all of my muscles are for. You should get inside now since we are about to leave. Aside from Rafael, I will be keeping you safe tonight. No need to thank me," Logan said, stopping her before she could thank him.

"I wasn’t going to thank you. It is your duty as a knight to guard us. I hope you don’t fall asleep and end up sliding off your horse. That would be really embarrassing," Annalise said, walking around him to get inside the carriage.

"An insult to how I guard someone will not be taken lightly. I have stayed up for hours on hours travelling on a horse or sometimes on foot and never fell down from being tired. For what you said, if anyone tries to attack us, I will point them to your carriage," Logan joked.

"And after I am done with them, I am coming for the fool who sent them my way. Do you really want to play that game with me, Logan?" Annalise asked, turning around to stare him down. "If you plead with me, I might end you pretty quick to stop your suffering."

"What did I honestly see in you, Annalise?" Logan muttered.

Now that Annalise stuck around to talk to him instead of constantly running away, he realised how they were not suited for each other. He was also starting to realise that all of her threats toward him in the past might have been serious, and she might have been plotting to kill him.

"You saw a pretty face and didn’t know that there was a deadly side to it. I’m glad we understand each other now. I’m going to enjoy scaring you," Annalise said, chuckling as she stepped into the carriage.

"Get to your horse," Rafael said as he approached Logan.

"Don’t take this the wrong way, but are you sure you want to be with her? I think there’s something wrong with her," Logan whispered so Annalise would not hear him. His mind was starting to replay his encounters with her, and now he could see each time his life was dangling by a thread.

Rafael was almost tempted to tell Logan of Annalise’s plans to let him down hard, but they had to get moving so he couldn’t scare Logan any more than he already was. "Get to your horse, Logan. She can hear you," Rafael said, peering into the carriage at Annalise smiling at him.

"Right," Logan replied, leaving Rafael to deal with Annalise.

Rafael double-checked the bags were secure and then entered the carriage with Annalise. "What did you say to Logan?" He asked after taking a seat opposite her. "He seems to be afraid of you now."

"He should be," Annalise said. "We just had a little understanding. There is nothing for you to worry about. Why is it that I made space for you to sit beside me, but you chose to sit on the other side? Are you messing with me or are you waiting for the carriages to start moving?"

Rafael thought she might have wanted a little space in the carriage. What he didn’t want to happen was for her to feel bothered by him being close after they had taken their relationship further. "I thought you would have wanted that side to yourself," he said.

"Nonsense. It is a long ride back to the manor and I am bound to fall asleep after looking at the scenery. Why should I fall asleep on the carriage seat when I can lay my head on your shoulder or lap?" Annalise questioned, patting the empty spot beside her. "We’ll be away from each other since you need to go to Lockwood. Let me enjoy the ride back."

"Then, since it is you who wants to enjoy the ride, shouldn’t you come to me?" Rafael asked, using her own trick on her.

Annalise bit her tongue. She couldn’t argue with him there. She relished the way he was joining in her game to be the one giving orders. Before she could get up, the carriage started to move so she had to wait for it to become steady. Rafael offered his hand to help her stand in the moving carriage without falling.

"I have not forgotten our earlier conversation about how our night was tame," Annalise said the second she sat down.

"I’m happy to hear that it is still on your mind. Were you hoping for me to show you what I meant now?" Rafael asked, snaking his left arm around her waist to keep her close to him.

Annalise did a look over the carriage. "I can already feel my back hurting from doing something in this carriage unless I am to sit on your lap, but then I do not see how that would be any different from last night."

Annalise then remembered that she wasn’t able to keep her voice down no matter how much she tried. They were in the carriage alone, but there were still knights riding on horses beside them, the coachman, and the carriage Beatrice and River were riding in were not far behind them.

"How about you just tell me instead of showing me? Feed my curiosity with your words. Dirty talk can be as good as actions if done right. Hey!" Annalise exclaimed, glaring at Rafael for pushing her head to lay on his shoulder.

"Just go to sleep, Annalise," Rafael replied. She got him all excited for nothing and rather than trying to convince her, he was going to let her sleep so his excitement wouldn’t be toyed with.

"You’re a bore," Annalise muttered, shifting her body to make herself comfortable to lay on him and look out the window. She planned to stay awake so the ride back to the manor would not come quickly.

She wanted the ride to be as slow as possible so she could savour their time together.
