Chapter 269: Future (3)

"Don’t look at me like that. I came to check on you and bring you some news. You can go back to being with Annalise after you take care of important matters," Logan said, stepping back to put some space between him and Rafael as a precaution if Rafael wanted to hit him. "Guards stopped by again. Asking questions because Lady Everett says we put Siena in danger."

Rafael closed his bedroom door after he stepped out in case Annalise happened to step out of the bathroom. Logan was the last person Rafael wanted to see Annalise as she was now.

"I remember your parents crossing paths with that woman in the past, but it seems like she is close to your uncle. Siena is staying with her and from what we gathered so far, her mansion is where his men gather. She is close to Siena’s father. An old friend," said Logan.

Rafael buttoned his shirt as he walked down the corridor. "She isn’t exactly a family friend. Just someone my mother saw from time to time when we visit because of Wendy. I wouldn’t expect much from her since she isn’t loyal to us. Don’t worry about looking into her connection to Travis and Siena’s father. That doesn’t matter at the moment."

Rafael would deal with Lady Everett in the future when they returned to this town. At the moment, she was not a big threat. Just a woman who had no idea what kind of game she was getting herself into.

"I’m going to make the assumption that she is an old lover of his. What else would make a woman go to such lengths unless he is paying her a large amount of money? She sent the guards to speak with us about the dangers Siena got into and asked for Siena’s guard to be released," Logan revealed.

"Is that so? Send a message to the guards not to release him until someone from our side has questioned him. Anything else?" Rafael asked, failing to see why his time with Annalise was disturbed. It was common sense to not let her guard be released yet. "Did you try to destroy my door for only this?"

"Hey! I thought it was important the guards came to us. There is more I need to tell you about the men we are questioning, but honestly, when I heard your mother say we are not allowed on this floor, I knew you have to be enjoying yourself with a certain maid so I had to stop that shit. If I am not with a woman, why should- Fuck!" Logan cursed, touching his arm. "I’ll tell your mother you hit me again."

"I also came because I was worried about you after hearing you got stabbed. Don’t you think you should show your face to the knights who weren’t here? They’re worried since it has been a while since you got hurt. The last time you were wounded, we thought your time as commander would come to an end. Just show your face and get back to your lady," Logan said.

"You’re all like children," Rafael sighed.

"You should also speak with your parents if you haven’t already. Your father was really upset when he learned someone reached the women and during the time that I spent with him, he was still angry about it. Then your mother wasn’t her usual self but Annalise distracted her here and there. We really need to kill him soon," Logan said, wanting Travis dead just as all the other knights did.

Beatrice was a second mother to them and for some, she was the only mother figure they had. Before following Rafael, most of the knights followed his father and then when Rafael followed his father’s lead, they followed him. They moved as one big family. An enemy of the Callahans was an enemy of the knights.

"The king’s request for me to go to the palace is interfering with my plans. He will die," Rafael said. It was just bad timing with Tobias requesting his presence now when Siena had told him where Travis was staying.

"Leave it to the knights-"

"No," Rafael quickly denied the offer. He would join his father in killing the man who made his mother’s life hell and then attempt to kidnap Annalise. "My father would not allow the knights to get rid of him. This is a fight he has been waiting over twenty years to finish. Get some food and then some rest. I am fine," Rafael patted Logan’s shoulder.

Rafael walked ahead of Logan to first find his mother and father so he could have a proper conversation with them since their earlier one ended quickly to let Annalise into his room.

He went to the other side of the home to the room his parents used.

Rafael heard their muffled voices when he stood in front of the door. It sounded like they were yelling at each other, a rare occurrence for him. Rafael knocked on the door to get their attention and then waited for the door to finally open.

"Rafael," Beatrice said, surprised to see her son when she opened the door. When she left him and Annalise alone, she didn’t expect to see him any time soon. "Why are you out of bed? Did something happen?"

"No. I came to speak with you two since our last talk was short. Can I come in or is this a bad time?" He asked, looking past his mother to his father standing near the window.

"Of course, you can come in. Maybe you can help me to convince your father that there was nothing he could do about today. I was not hurt and the man who came into the room was killed. What will it take for us to move on from this? I can’t take another minute of him thinking he was careless with leaving me alone with the other women," Beatrice said, placing her hands on her hips as she looked at River.

One minute he was silent and then the next he was speaking of how there was a chance she could have been taken away from him.

"It could have ended differently if Annalise was not there with you-"

"But she was, and if she wasn’t, I would have screamed to alert you of danger," said Beatrice. She was no fighter, but she would have fought for her life to not be taken away and sent to her brother.

"Honestly River, each time you think I got hurt because you weren’t around, it just makes me angry with myself for being so weak. We’re all safe so why do we have to think so negatively?" Beatrice asked, desperately wanting to move on from this.

Travis was getting what he wanted with them still shaken up by this hours later.

River needed Beatrice to understand that it wasn’t easy for him to stop the countless thoughts in his head about how today could have ended. He was still trying to figure out how someone managed to reach her.

"Instead of thinking about that, why don’t we think about our son and his injury?" Beatrice suggested.

River looked at Rafael’s shoulder. He was just as concerned about Rafael as he was about Beatrice. He knew Rafael would be able to recover from this, but Rafael was his child so seeing him be wounded no matter the size made him worry.

Then there was what had been on his mind since yesterday and now the incident today confirmed something. He thought it was just a simple curiosity when they were at the orphanage, but seeing how Annalise had it in her to kill someone, he couldn’t help but think she was someone not from this side of the kingdom.

River knew about the marking on the orphanage gates because of Nicolas. It was a shocking revelation in the past but explained so much of the person Nicolas was.

Thelma spoke of Annalise’s interest in the marking and how she seemed shocked by it, trying once again to get an answer about what the marking meant since his father never told her why it was there.

If his guess was correct, he had so much to worry about for his son.
