Chapter 261: Connected (1)

Annalise travelled with River, Beatrice, and the knights to a small house River thought would keep them safe until it was time to return home. She was able to properly wash up to get the blood off her, but there were no dresses in the house they were using, so she washed the spots with blood on her dress and hung up the dress in the room she was given to use.

Unfortunately, the town guards took the man River had knocked unconscious, but they would allow River to visit the small court in town to get the chance to question him.

The workers from the shoe shop were given money because of what they witnessed today, and the owner was also given money to help with cleaning up any traces of blood the knights missed. Some of the money was also for any damages caused.

Annalise was impatient to hear about Rafael. River sent someone with a message to Rafael, but a message was not sent back to him. Annalise sat by a window to see when a knight or anyone would come to say it was safe to leave.

When her dress became a little bit dry, Annalise went out to sit with Beatrice so they could keep themselves distracted while River and the knights tried to hear from Rafael and keep an eye out for more danger.

Finally, a message from Rafael came just as the sky was turning dark. Not wasting a second, they gathered whatever they had and started their journey back to the home they were originally staying in as soon as the message came. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

As their carriage neared the house, Annalise tapped her fingers on the cushion of her seat as she looked out the window to inspect the damage. The front yard, garden, and gates did not look disturbed. If she wasn’t around when Rafael received word about a fight, she wouldn’t think something happened here.

There was no blood to indicate that someone died there. It didn’t calm Annalise’s mind since the knights she spotted by the gates could have tidied up the yard for their arrival and to hide that something happened here from the town guards

Annalise waited for River to help out Beatrice and then she exited the carriage to follow them to wherever Rafael was. It was odd that he did not come out to greet his parents and show that he was fine, but she tried not to be so negative and decided to go with Rafael being busy dealing with the people who ruined today.

"Where is he?" Beatrice questioned the knight coming out of the front door. She disliked the way he looked down at the ground instead of answering her right away. "Did something happen to my son?" She inquired, raising her voice as she had no time for beating around the bush.

"The commander is not severely injured, but there is a wound on his shoulder. He is lying in his bedroom and a doctor-"

Beatrice didn’t stay to listen when she preferred to see for herself what type of wound Rafael had. If it looked bad, she was going to have a doctor spend the night to keep an eye on him.

Annalise couldn’t believe that Rafael had managed to be wounded, but then again, she did warn him to be careful going into a fight without his armour. She followed River and Beatrice inside with some distance between them as she wasn’t sure she would be able to join them to see Rafael’s state.

Annalise walked slower to increase the distance between them and by the time she reached the second floor, the door of Rafael’s room was already open and she could hear Beatrice on the verge of crying, but she sounded happy.

Annalise stopped right before the two doors, wondering if she could go inside, but after some thought, she decided to go into her bedroom. River and Beatrice would want some time alone with their son.

Annalise opened her bedroom door and went inside, ignoring that her mind wanted her to go into Rafael’s room. She closed her door behind her so she wouldn’t turn around and march right into his room to hit him for getting hurt.

Annalise was about to move away from her door when a knock on the other side of her door startled her. She turned around and opened the door to find Beatrice standing before her. River was right behind her, coming out of Rafael’s room. She thought the two of them would stay with Rafael for a long time so why were they here?

"That boy is fine other than the fact he is already sending us out of his room to have dinner. He said something about me crying too much over something small. I’m only going to annoy him if I stay by his side, so would you mind staying with him to make sure he is fine like he says he is?" Beatrice requested.

Truthfully, Beatrice noticed how Rafael looked to the door when they walked in, waiting for someone else to join them, but then she heard a door closed and assumed Annalise was not going to join them. Rafael was stubborn when it came to her checking his wound so she would leave him in the hands of Annalise.

Her time being the one to mostly take care of Rafael was quickly coming to an end with Annalise around. She trusted that Annalise would keep her son in bed so he could recover quickly. Now that she saw Rafael, Beatrice finally felt like she could eat.

"I will take care of him," Annalise answered. She was glad Beatrice came to her so wouldn’t have to wait any longer to see Rafael.

Beatrice smiled, grateful for Annalise being with them. She held River’s hand for them to leave together and finally have a proper thought about what happened today.

He was still stuck on the danger she was in today so she wanted to talk with him in private to let him know that it wasn’t his fault someone slipped by and got close to her. He was simply too preoccupied with getting rid of other people trying to hurt them.

Annalise walked over to Rafael’s bedroom, not waiting for Beatrice and River to be out of sight. Judging from how Beatrice acted, he couldn’t be seriously injured, but the second she stepped foot into his bedroom, she felt nervous.

Annalise found Rafael lying on his bed without a shirt and his right shoulder bandaged up. Before going toward the bed, she locked the door to give them some privacy.

"Why do you look angry with me?" Rafael asked upon seeing her expression as she neared the bed. He didn’t think Annalise would be greeting him with tears like his mother, but he didn’t expect to be glared at.

"Because I am angry with you. As talented as you are, you are lying here with a wound on your shoulder," Annalise replied, sitting at the bottom of the bed to be out of reach of his hands. "A man I care for should not be losing fights. Now I can’t find it in my heart to fantasise about you beating up others with your sword."

Rafael wanted to hear more about these fantasies Annalise had. He was sure it had something to do with the days she would sit and watch him train with the knights. "I am sorry to have disappointed you, but if you tell me about what happens in these fantasies-"

"You will make it come to life? As fun as that would be, it doesn’t sound so enticing now when you are sitting here bandaged up. I feel the need to hit you," Annalise said.

"You hit a wounded man?" Rafael asked, already knowing that she would.

"Yes, because it is a man who did not listen to me," Annalise said, standing to move up the bed to sit closer to Rafael. "Are you truly fine or are you trying to save face after someone landed a hit on you? You used to boast about not getting hit, but now I know that is a lie."

"The wound isn’t as serious as everyone speaks of it. I was attacked by three men at once and couldn’t avoid the attack in time. Fortunately, the sword didn’t go deep into my flesh, but it left a wound that needed to be wrapped. I’ve had worse wounds than this," Rafael answered.

"So," Annalise said, leaning forward to poke him on his shoulder near the bandages. She did not get a reaction from him showing that he was in pain. "If I were to do something to you now, it would not hurt?"
