Chapter 250: Late night talk (3)

"The women make it complicated," Rafael answered.

"Well, then you should stop picking complicated women. Rafael, what happened to the food you offered me? There were also supposed to be drinks here but I don’t see any. Did you lie just to get in bed with you?" Annalise asked, wanting the food that was promised to her.

She hadn’t eaten since long before the ball and it wasn’t a lot because she thought she would get to eat again.

Why wasn’t there any food at the ball? If there was, why hadn’t she seen it so she could have eaten something? What did everyone eat to be able to get through the boring ball without looking for food?

"You want me to get out of this bed to search for food and drinks at this hour?" Rafael asked, needing to be clear that was what she wanted.

"I thought being a commander would make you smart. That is clearly the reason I brought it up. I am hungry. I ate a little before the ball because your mother spoke of fears of not fitting in the dress. You did promise me so you should keep your promise," said Annalise, ending her words with a smile to convince him.

Rafael sighed as he sat up to get the food and drinks he promised her. It was late so the servants must have gone home already and if there were any to stay here, they were already in their beds so he had to gather everything himself.

"Do not sneak out while I am away," Rafael said as he walked to the door. He wouldn’t put it past her to use this as a distraction so she could run back to her bedroom.

Annalise switched positions to watch him leave. "And miss the food coming my way? Never! I will be waiting here for you and as a maid, I must warn you that you shouldn’t keep a lady waiting too long."

Rafael shook his head and left the room before Annalise could enjoy another second of this.

When the door closed, Annalise laid flat on the bed, now able to think clearly thanks to Rafael being out of the room. She didn’t get any answers about the signs around the orphanage because she didn’t ask the right questions about Nicolas Callahan.

It wasn’t every day she would hear a knight or guard not speak poorly about her people. What led Nicolas to have a good opinion about her people? To say that they were defending their land. Most people didn’t like to admit that it was their land. They always said her people were fighting over land that belonged to the king.

Annalise thought about the woman Nicolas loved. Where did she suddenly go that she was never seen again? Knights travelled all over the kingdom to protect it. If Nicolas didn’t see her, there was a chance that River would, and then Rafael. The only place they could not step foot was the land near the border.

There were many stories of her people leaving the border out of curiosity and then falling in love with people here. Sometimes they were never seen again and sometimes they returned. Those who returned feared being caught, missing home or lost their family.

"If she was from the border, grandmother might know of her. But no one would want to speak of falling in love with a knight. I wouldn’t," Annalise muttered, feeling like she was getting nowhere.

She almost wanted to sneak back to the orphanage and ask about the signs because they concerned her people. What if one of her people living here were to see those signs and think that someone from the border was there to help? It could be a trap.

"But why an orphanage?" Annalise wondered.

She was not going to get anywhere with what she wanted to know unless she spoke to the woman at the orphanage and from their short conversation, she doubted Thelma would want to answer her questions.

If she asked Rafael more questions about Nicolas, the woman, signs, or the border, she would have to explain why she was so curious. The best thing to do was tell her father about an orphanage having their markings and finding out what he knew. Anyone who had something to do with it or came across it at one point would come forward.

Annalise couldn’t think about the orphanage for long when she was dealing with her current feelings for Rafael and having to enjoy their little time together. It was still unbelievable that she was here in his room with her wearing nothing but his shirt.

If she had indulged herself in her desires earlier, she would have gotten the chance to spend more time experiencing being together with Rafael. She might have also ended up with full armour.

Annalise closed her eyes, regretting that she made a deal with Thomas to go home. She felt guilty that she wished something would hold up Thomas in Lockwood so she would spend more time with Rafael.

Annalise tapped her head with her hands and opened her eyes, getting rid of all thoughts about having to leave so she could enjoy the moment. She had Rafael Callahan running to get food for her. It was not the time to think about anything other than him.

Annalise sat up from the bed and went to the window so she could look out of it to have something to do while she waited for her food. She hoped this was a good lesson for Rafael to not lie about promising food. Other than weapons, food was something she wouldn’t joke around about.

Annalise sat on the window sill and looked down at the road in front of the home. Knights were walking around talking to each other while keeping watch for danger.

"Would that man plan to hurt them now that they are away from all the other knights?" Annalise asked herself, thinking about Travis. She doubted it was only Siena here. Someone had to be here watching over Siena.

The Callahans couldn’t properly enjoy their trip since they were on the lookout for danger coming from Travis.

Hearing about their family problems Annalise felt more grateful for her family. There wasn’t a crazy uncle or aunt trying to get her to do what they wanted. No relatives were trying to kill her father to take his spot. Why was it hard to be a good family for other people? To ignore each other if you couldn’t bring yourself to act as a good family? When the bedroom door opened, Annalise got up to help Rafael since he was to be bringing food and drinks.

She was surprised to see him come in with a large tray of pastries. Annalise was expecting him to speak of it being too late for her to eat a lot.

"You brought a piece of cake," she said, taking up the plate with the cake and letting him pass so she could shut the door and lock it for him. "You are working really hard for another confession. Did anyone see you?"

"My father was in the kitchen getting water for my mother," Rafael replied.

He didn’t share any words with his father. There was only a look like his father was going to forget what he saw. Rafael knew his father was aware this food was for Annalise since he wasn’t a person to eat late in the night. Even as a child he ate dinner and asked for nothing later aside from water.

Rafael placed the tray on the ground since it was too risky to put it on the bed with the glass of juice and water he brought her. "You are to eat and then we will go to sleep," he said.

"Yes, commander!" Annalise teasingly replied. She sat down on the floor to enjoy the food she desperately needed before her angry side would come out. "I cannot eat all of this alone so sit with me and help me. If you ask nicely, I might feed you a piece of my cake."
