Chapter 225: Kill for you (1)

"Isn’t it nice for the two of us to be alone together? I’m sorry to take you away from playing with the children, but we must get the things we need for the ball early so we don’t bother the men later. Thank you," Beatrice thanked Logan after he offered his hand to help her out of the carriage.

"You’re welcome. And next," Logan said, smiling at Annalise who was ready to get out of the carriage without any help. "Don’t avoid my hand, Annalise. I want to look like a gentleman here."

Annalise used Logan’s hand to step down out of the carriage. "If you want to be a gentleman, please save me if she wants me to try on a dress," she whispered.

Trying on dresses was not fun for her and she didn’t need a dress since one was already prepared for the ball.

"She is excited to have someone to shop with after staying inside because of the danger in town. If you don’t mind, please help her enjoy the moment. She is like a mother to me so I like seeing her happy. What’s that, Annalise? You can’t wait to try on a dress?" Logan asked out loud to get Beatrice’s attention.

"You!" Annalise exclaimed, trying to get ahold of Logan, but he slipped away from her like the slippery fish he was.

"Then we shouldn’t waste any time and go to this dressmaker I am familiar with," Beatrice said, returning to Annalise’s side to hold her hand. "Rafael has already prepared you a dress, but men have no idea what styles work best for us so it wouldn’t hurt to have a few extras to pick from."

Annalise looked around at the shops they walked by. The dress she wore could never compare to the ones on display and she knew the price would have her spending all the money she made.

Annalise tried not to think about the torture of trying on dresses and focused more on keeping Beatrice happy. Whatever was happening with her brother seemed to be spoiling her happiness so for a few hours, Annalise didn’t mind being a doll for her.

"Is there any colour you think works well for you?" Beatrice asked, looking around at dresses to get an idea of what she wanted for Annalise.

"I don’t know. I just pick up any colour dress and wear it as long as it is for a good price. No?" Annalise asked, watching Beatrice shake her head.

"Even if you are looking for a good-priced dress you should still pick out what suits you. I’m sorry for making this about me, but when I left my family it was a little bit hard for me as a spoiled lady to get used to not just buying whatever I want. I loved dressing up so I learned how to keep my style while not spending much money. I have tips if you need them," said Beatrice.

"There are some shops where you can go to buy dresses that might have a little tear in them and fix them yourself. Sometimes there are young ladies who sell dresses they consider to be out of season. They will sell it for whatever you ask because they just want to get it off their hands. I can tell you who to avoid since some wouldn’t miss the chance to turn around and shame you."

"Thank you, but I think it would be a waste for me to buy pretty dresses since I only want them to work in. I have never been fond of dressing up and dresses get in the way of me moving around. There were a few things in my youth when I took my dress off to run around. My mother was not happy with it," Annalise said, remembering the look of horror on her mother’s face.

It was from then on that her mother had pants made to fit her so she could run around and not get frustrated.

"I imagine that you were a child to have your parents constantly worrying about you. Rafael was the opposite. He was a quiet child who didn’t go out to play with the other children. I feared he liked being alone too much so I sent him off to a school. He didn’t stay long. Would you believe that Rafael ran away on the first day at school and went to Lockwood?" Beatrice asked.

No one would believe her when she spoke about the fright Rafael gave her.

"Rafael did that? It is hard to believe that your son who likes to follow orders would run away from school. I didn’t know he was such a rebel. It is good to know," Annalise said, happy to have something to say to Rafael when he spoke about the troublesome child she must have been.

"Rafael has his moments of making me stressed. He is a good son most of the time, but then there are times when he does things to make me question if he is my son and if someone didn’t replace him with a boy who looks like him. Boys," Beatrice sighed.

She was dreading Annalise seeing that Rafael was taking Siena to the ball. All to make Annalise jealous. She had been looking forward to Rafael going to the ball with Annalise by his side, but now that dream was ruined.

What was Rafael planning to do if Annalise got really jealous and stormed out of the ball or if Annalise thought he was better suited with Siena because of what everyone was saying? This was the perfect time for Rafael to come to her for advice, but he didn’t and started this plan that would end in someone feeling sad. That someone would be Siena or Annalise.

Beatrice could only wait patiently since she didn’t like to meddle in Rafael’s relationships. As much as she would like to tell Annalise right now that Rafael was taking Siena to the ball, she didn’t want to get too involved and become more a part of this messy situation Rafael started.

"This is it," Beatrice said, leading Annalise and the knights inside the shop she knew would have everything Annalise needed for the night.

Annalise gulped, mentally preparing herself for what was to come. She looked behind her at where Logan stood with the other knights and wondered if it was too late to run for it. She could run from here all the way to where Thomas was in Lockwood. She could make it if she ran and never looked back.

It was too late for Annalise to try running away from the shop as Beatrice tugged on her hand to bring her inside with her.

’This is to make Beatrice happy,’ Annalise repeated in her head. This would be her parting gift to Beatrice since she was not going to be Rafael’s maid for much longer.

The moment Beatrice entered the shop, she was greeted by two young women ready to find a dress for her, and already showing her what was new.

Annalise tried her best to keep up with talking about colours and needing a fitting, but she was lost. All she wanted to do was find a chair to sit on to wait for Beatrice to be done searching for what she needed.
