The Gigolo System in the Academy of Magic-Chapter 24: The Truth?
Chapter 24 - The Truth?
To find the eavesdropper in a few minutes...
"At least a level 6 mage."
James was tense but he didn't show any surprise on his face and kept walking through the crowd. His Abyss Walker bloodline meant that he had great stealth abilities, so he tried to lower his presence as much as possible.
He didn't know whether the products of the system could be tracked by a powerful mage or not but his hands had already found his communicator and sent out a message.
A level 6 mage...it's impossible to sneak in from the outside. Ainsworth's defensive capabilities were no joke, the runic restrictions had been placed by the principal himself, and with a level 9 mage - the vice principal- watching over the academy, high level mages should not be able to enter undetected.
So someone from the faculty? A professor?
Actually James had always suspected as much, otherwise he wouldn't have been placing a trace crystal in his dorm every night. He wasn't afraid of an outside assassin but someone from the inside. A professor would have a lot less restrictions in the academy and they would not be closely monitored by the magic defense system.
But the Everhearts, could they really have someone at the school? He found it a little unbelievable.
The reason he felt this way has to do with the complicated history of the school. Even though the Thirteen Houses were the de facto leaders of the human realm, they weren't uncontested. They came into that position after a series of bloody conflicts.
For the rest of the noble families, the Thirteen Houses were both an object of admiration and fear. Don't look at how everyone in class always follows Ryan or Lydia and obeys their every word, what they are thinking in their hearts may be very different.
The Everheart and Clearwater Houses, along with the rest of the thirteen, are too powerful. The other families need to have a united front to fight against them, this is where Ainsworth came in.
The principal of the school always had a bad relationship with the Thirteen Houses, so the academy gradually became a beacon of unity between the lesser noble families. This is why it is surprising that the Everhearts could get a professor on their side.
James walked along the streets casually looking at the shop fronts but on the inside his thoughts were racing.
He died after going to a training camp in the northern regions and then a few days later there was a delegation of demons coming to the school. How could it be such a coincidence?
James was always curious what motive Ryan Everheart would have to kill him, after all why take the risk? But if during the last training camp he stumbled onto something he wasn't supposed to...
It's possible they silenced him.
After walking around for a while, he went inside an old bookshop. It was filled with antique tomes and occasionally people could be seen wandering the shelves.
James glanced at a red haired woman who was perusing a book at the corner of the shop. When he saw her flipping through the pages while shaking her head, his heart, which had been tense for the last few minutes, finally relaxed.
He stayed in the shop for a while and then left with a calm expression on his face. He didn't return to his dormitories tonight but instead headed straight for the teacher's residences.
After he had been at Selena's house for a few minutes, the beautiful red haired woman also came home.
"There is no one following you. I'm sure of it, unless they are a level 8 mage or above."
Hearing this James let go off the last of his worries. The two people went to the living room and James explained to Selena what happened today.
Even though her favorability was still at [79], they had become a lot closer, especially after what happened yesterday night, so James was comfortable telling her all of his thoughts.
"What did the vice-principal say this afternoon?" James remembered Selena had participated in an emergency meeting.
"He just warned us that the demon students might cause trouble tomorrow, so we should be careful and not ruin the academy's reputation."
"...But the Everhearts, I heard they are opposed to the peace treaty between humans and demons, it's only because the majority of the 13 Houses agreed that it got the go ahead."
Selena had previously asked her family to find out information about the Everhearts but it has only been a few days so they couldn't get much. But this news was fairly well known among noble circles. Selena explained further:
"The council is not united. There are three major alliances and the Everhearts are in the anti-demon camp, they tend to be warmongers compared to the neutral faction and the peace faction who both tend to advocate diplomacy first."
James had a thoughtful look on his face upon hearing this.
"Then do you think the Everhearts are planning to do something with the demon delegation? To ruin the chance of a peace treaty?"
"It's possible." Selena nodded, but then she shook her head, "But can they do? Even if they have a professor helping them in the school, as long as the vice-principal is here nothing major can happen!"
A level 9 mage was a completely different entity. Even though the vice-principal seemed normal to the students, that's because he was restraining himself. If he really wanted to, he could probably completely destroy a living fortress like Ainsworth Academy in a few minutes.
A level 9 mage can already establish rules.
In their territory if they say the enemy can't walk, they can't walk. If they say they can't breathe, they can't breathe. That's how fearsome the level of control a high level mage can execute.
James also understood this but he couldn't help but think further, "What about the training camp next week? It will be away from the school so the vice-principal won't be there to protect everyone."
