Chapter 101: Chapter 101: The Love Story of the Embroidered Ball (11)

Xiao Xi had packed everything Su Li would need for the journey.

"Miss, are you really not taking me with you?" Xiao Xi asked, her face sullen, as she tried to hold back her tears.

Su Li pinched the girl’s plump cheeks with a chuckle. "Stop pretending..."

Su Li had grown more patient with the girl who had accompanied her through her tumultuous past life. Under her indulgence over the past few days, the young girl had become much livelier and now even dared to be sly with her.

"This time I am going to the Capital on official business, so it’s not convenient to take you with me. Next time, I will definitely bring you along, okay?"

Fortunately, Xiao Xi knew her limits, so seeing her Miss say so, she could only puff up her cheeks and give up, even if she was unhappy.

Su Li said, "Don’t pack too much for me, just a few pieces of personal clothing will do, as I have the silver notes with me..."

This trip was meant to be discreet, intending to keep it hidden from too many people.

"Miss, the one from Lanzhi Courtyard is causing trouble again," another maid said as she entered with breakfast and set the food onto the dining table before slowly speaking up.

Xiao Xi frowned, "Why is he causing trouble again? He does it several times a day, doesn’t he ever get tired of it?"

As Xiao Xi spoke, she sneakily observed Su Li’s expression. Seeing that her Miss truly showed no affection for the new groom, Xiao Xi spoke even more boldly.

"Our family provides him with good food and drink, saves him from begging and roaming about, and even his mother in the countryside is well taken care of. What else is there for him to be unsatisfied with?"

The maid who had just come in hesitated, wanting to speak but afraid to, and instead looked at Su Li.

Su Li: "What did he say this time?"

These days, with all the trouble, Su Li knew that Huang Zheng either wanted to see her or was making a fuss about going out.

Suddenly finding himself bestowed with riches, Huang Zheng had become rather arrogant, especially since he was nominally married to Miss Su of the Su Family.

Even though he was down and out, he was still a man and believed, from the bottom of his heart, that no matter how unapproachable Lady Su had been before, now that she was his wife, he did not care whether he was a son-in-law; she was his woman and had to be compliant and serve him to his liking. He might even show her some affection otherwise...

However, Su Li had never shown up, letting Huang Zheng’s dissatisfaction rise to a peak. If not for the suppressive guards, he would have loudly complained to the entire city by now.

No matter how unbearable Huang Zheng’s thoughts were, they meant nothing if he couldn’t leave; everything was in vain.

Huang Zheng hadn’t realized that the Su Li he thought he could manipulate was actually more indifferent toward him than his pets, merely providing him food and that was it.

But desires are hard to fill; having seen extreme luxury, a person already predisposed to laziness found it even harder to return to the right path.

And now, his absurd demands were becoming more outrageous each day.

"Miss, please, don’t get angry..."

Su Li: "Then tell me what exactly he said that makes you so worried I’ll be angry."

"He, he said he wants to assert his authority as a husband, asking Miss to come over... Your wedding night was never completed, and there’s also... he wants you to organize the household accounts and, and hand them over to him..."

"He says that the old master is getting on in years, and it’s inappropriate for him to tire himself; the household surely needs a man to take charge."

Su Li: "He really dares to dream..."

Su Li leisurely enjoyed her breakfast. The hot food comforted her cold stomach and spread warmth throughout her body. This warmth made her more tolerant of Huang Zheng’s offensive remarks.

After finishing the breakfast in front of her, wiping the corner of her mouth, and cleaning her hands, she turned to Xiao Xi, who was waiting by her side, fuming with indignation. "Instruct them to no longer prepare meals for Lanzhi Courtyard as per previous standards. I reckon his stomach can’t be in good condition, considering he used to alternate between starving and feasting. Prepare simpler meals suitable for a common household, to help him nurse his stomach."

Huang Zheng, accustomed to feasting on extravagant dishes, found it unbearable to suddenly return to plain meals.

Even though plain meals were what he longed for during his begging days, he now found them tasteless as wax and erupted in anger, shouting, "Even dogs wouldn’t eat this. How dare you serve this to me?"

He overturned the simple meal on the table.

Upon hearing this, Su Li didn’t even lift her eyes from her book, she simply said indifferently, "If he doesn’t want to eat, he must not be hungry. Then don’t bother sending any food."

Let him go hungry, Su Li thought. She had seen dog trainers use this method on disobedient dogs.

Starve... Starve until he submits, then give him a piece of meat to keep him compliant.

Su Li had estimated that he could defiantly endure a few days, but to her surprise, it only took half a day before she received news that Huang Zheng had capitulated.

Such weak resolve, she thought. She had many more methods to subdue him that she hadn’t even used yet, which was rather unsatisfying.

Su Li: "Since that’s the case, just handle it as you see fit."

He wasn’t worth any more of her attention. After all, she was heading to the Capital soon, all she needed was to keep him restrained from causing harm.

Xiao Xi, grinning widely, said, "Alright, Miss, don’t worry. I will take care of him and make sure he doesn’t tarnish your reputation."

What Su Li didn’t realize as she left Chaoshan with Mr. Wen was how thoroughly Xiao Xi would implement her instructions.

In Lanzhi Courtyard, if Huang Zheng displayed even a slight disobedience, he would be denied food. If he behaved, he would receive a palm-sized piece of meat with his meal.

Day in and day out, Huang Zheng did nothing but eat and sleep. Although each meal consisted only of ordinary coarse-grained buns, his lack of activity and exercise soon made him swell up like an inflated balloon.

Though he grew plumper, his physical condition worsened compared to when he wandered outside, to the point where he would be out of breath just by walking a few steps in the courtyard, having to rest by leaning on a chair.

Huang Zheng was completely ruined by the Su Family. If he were released now, even if Su Li did nothing to him, he likely wouldn’t survive.

------------

Mr. Wen’s attendant lifted the carriage window and looked back at the carriage following them. Through the thick curtains, he couldn’t make out the conditions of the person inside, but he inspected for a long while before turning back.

The attendant, surprised, asked Mr. Wen, "Sir, are we really letting Miss Su follow us?"

Mr. Wen stroked his beard, replying indifferently, "It is the young master’s wish."

Attendant: "Ah, but Miss Su is just a woman..."

"Be careful with your words. Don’t guess the young master’s thoughts carelessly, or I can’t guarantee your safety."

Hearing this, the attendant was startled and quickly bowed his head, "I overstepped my bounds."
