Lady Chen briskly approached, and in a fit of anger snatched away the velvet flower.
“Still find it too ugly and rustic, take it, it’s not for you!”
Pei Qin shrugged her shoulders indifferently.
Si Ya’s small face darkened with regret.
The velvet flower was such a lovely shade of red, even if she didn’t wear it, she could have shared it with San Ya!
Pei Wenbo also came over, trying to snatch the osmanthus candy from Pei Wendong’s hands.
Pei Wendong instinctively clenched his hand but didn’t dare to resist; in the blink of an eye, Pei Wenbo had taken both pieces away.
Looking at his empty hand, Pei Wendong pursed his lips, didn’t say anything, and his eyes welled up with injustice.
He wanted to eat the osmanthus candy!
Pei Houli’s face darkened when he saw this.
“Er Lang!
Give back the osmanthus candy!”
“I won’t!
Why should I give it to them!” Pei Wenbo stubbornly clung to the osmanthus candy, glowering with rage at Pei Qin and Pei Wendong.
“She hit me!
And they even stole my pigeon meat!”
Lady Chen also chimed in, “The day before yesterday I was just digging out corn, and she grabbed the collar of my clothes and slammed me hard to the ground!
Yesterday was even worse, she kicked my head and knocked me over, and then stepped viciously on my face while cursing and beating me, a senior member of this family!” Mentioning this, Lady Chen felt like shredding Pei Qin to pieces.
Pei Houli looked at Pei Qin with incredulity.
San Ya wanted to explain, “Our eldest sister, she only…”
But Pei Qin couldn’t be bothered to explain to Pei Houli and instead turned to go help Lady Fang in the kitchen.
Since Pei Houli had come back, she had stayed in the kitchen without coming out.
Lady Fang bowed her head, her hands deftly plucking and washing vegetables.
She chopped up the cabbage and came over to start the fire.
“I’ll take care of the fire,” Pei Qin said as she moved a small stool to sit in front of the stove door.
Lady Fang continued to busily stir-fry the vegetables.
Outside, Pei Houli’s voice could be heard urging Pei Wenbo to return the osmanthus candy to Pei Wendong.
Pei Wenbo started to cry and wail, and from the main room, Old Pei said something, not clearly heard, that silenced Pei Wenbo.
The meal was ready, and San Ya and Si Ya were both busy carrying it to the main room.
Pei Qin, with the basket she’d used to wash vegetables, took down a pile of freshly steamed cornbread and scooped a large bowl of stir-fried cabbage and tofu as well.
“You’ve each already had several pieces of cornbread, why do you need so much!?” Lady Zhu said as she came over, reaching out to take some cornbread away.
Pei Qin reached out with her chopsticks intending to smack her hand.
“You really have a short memory!
You’ve forgotten what I said so quickly!
After working all afternoon, come mealtime you’re even worse off than those who didn’t lift a finger all day…”
“Just picking two sacks of corn, you want to eat so much!?
You’re not pigs, what do you need to hoard so much cornbread for!?” Lady Zhu withdrew her hand, glaring furiously at Pei Qin.
“Is two pieces of cornbread per person too much?” Pei Qin raised an eyebrow.
Old Pei called for Lady Zhu from the main room.
Lady Zhu, with a dark, menacing expression, gave Pei Qin a fierce glare before going back into the main room.
Shortly after, Pei Houli came with three pork buns, calling out to Pei Qin.
“Da Ya, come quickly!
These buns are filled with meat!
They’re all made with pure white flour!”
Pei Qin didn’t respond but looked toward Si Ya.
She didn’t care for the pork buns, but the young apprentices sure did.
Si Ya quickly got up and took the pork buns.

Pei Houli explained to Lady Fang while watching her, “There were only seven buns in total.
Our parents took two, share these three among the children!”
Lady Fang thanked him quietly.
Pei Houli returned to the main room for the meal.
With the three pork buns, neither Pei Qin nor Lady Fang ate.
One was given to each; San Ya, Si Ya, and Pei Wendong.
None of them wanted to finish theirs in one sitting.
Si Ya and San Ya shared one, saving the other for Pei Wendong to eat the next day.
Right after finishing the meal, Si Ya hid the remaining pork bun in the room, along with two white buns.
Lady Fang quietly cleaned the pots, washed the dishes, and fed the pigs.
Pei Qin, who had been pounding corn all afternoon, wasn’t asked by Lady Fang to help, so she stepped out and passed under the windows of the main room, overhearing Pei Houli discussing something once again with Old Pei and Lady Zhu.
“San Lang only has one brother among all the girls, the family is still too meager…”
