The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1164: Whatever Happens
Chapter 1164: Whatever Happens
Millenium Tower, an hour ago.
A red carpet stretched from the rotating door to the grand, luxurious main hall. Walking inside and looking up at the large scintillating chandelier, the visitor thought he had entered a royal palace.
Behind the front desk sat a man and a woman, both young. There were very few people coming in and out of the building at this time, and the two receptionists stared down at their phones, openly slacking off.
The visitor entered the main hall, his average build clad in black clothes and his face obscured by a baseball cap and a mask. His footsteps reached the two receptionists. The young man shot to his feet, while the young woman stayed seated, her eyes still on her phone as she concentrated on swiping the screen.
Despite not looking up, though, she did say in a professional tone, “What can we help you with, sir?”
“The restroom.”
“Ah, just head left and turn right,” the male receptionist said politely.
“Thanks.”
The visitor crossed the main hall and walked along the hallway, but he turned left halfway and walked into a hidden corridor, where a private elevator was. He opened the door with his ID card.
Entering the elevator, he pressed the button for -6F.
Ding. The door opened. All doors unlocked for him.
He headed to the Rabbit Room first. Three minutes later, he emerged with a heavy briefcase made of polished black metal. He found his way to the Lamb Room.
Standing at the door, he adjusted his cap before entering.
The softly lit treatment room was filled with automatic hospital beds. Heavenly Dog and Xiao Xin slept on two of them, with IV drips in their arms and sensors attached to their torsos for their vitals.
The visitor grabbed a chair and sat between the two beds. Placing the heavy metal briefcase on his lap, he pressed a button. The metal case flickered with colorful bands of light before slowly opening, releasing cold air.
It turned out to be a small icebox containing chipped ice and fridged canned beer.
“Tsk, going so overboard for icing beer. As expected of the billionaire among the Twelve Zodiac Signs.”
He took out a can of beer while taking off his baseball cap and mask. Crimson Bee, now a regular human.
He opened the can and had a sip. “Hm, nice!”
Chuckling, he pressed the can to Xiao Xin’s face. “Cheers, bro.”

He started drinking alone. It took no time for him to finish three cans. His face became flushed, and he began to chatter.
“Old Xiao, there’s no one I envy more than you.”
“You’re a real visionary. Just knock yourself out, and whatever happens happens.”
“If humans are doomed, you’ll just die in your sleep, oblivious to everything. You won’t feel pain or tortured mentally. If humans win, you’ll wake up to a new world. What a bargain it’ll be.”
“In comparison, we have much to endure. We either keep fighting, or stay behind and hide.”
“Put aside those fighting on the frontline, it’s not easy to stay behind, either. Thinking about the coming doomsday, I can’t sleep or eat well. Every day drags like a year. I’d rather sleep through all of it like you.”
“Old Xiao, I told you about Zero Probabiliy. I don’t know what you think, but I don’t believe humans can win. Not a bit. Look at the previous rounds. Humans lost when they had such a great advantage. How could anyone believe that we can win in this round?”
“Our only advantage is that our Divine Scion is still alive. And yes, Divine Scion sounds awesome. Everyone trusts him. But what makes a Divine Scion great? Because of the word ‘divine’?”
“It’s said that human determination can triumph over heaven, but no, humans have never managed to do it. We only feel like we can win because heaven doesn’t care enough to intervene.”
“This isn’t me being pessimistic, Old Xiao. It’s the truth.”
“I know that whether I join the fight or not, I’ll die.”
“Then it’ll be better to fight and die a heroic death, yes? There won’t be an audience or anyone to remember me, but at least I’ll feel like a hero when I die.”
“Haha, but I backed down at the last minute. My hands wouldn’t stop trembling. I know death comes to us all the same, only at different times, but my body cannot overcome its fear of death.”
“Even if I force myself to join the fight, fear will make me a dead weight dragging everyone down. It’s better to give my Talents to those already determined to sacrifice themselves. Then perhaps it’ll contribute to increasing our odds a little.”
Crimson Bee stopped rattling to stare up at the ceiling, his eyes brimming with tears.
He crushed the empty can. “Dammit, but I still can’t accept it. I know humans can’t defeat heaven, but I still can’t give up.”
“Maybe we can never accept defeat as long as we live, but God doesn’t care. God doesn’t have a heart. Can that be our only advantage over God?”
“Haha.” Crimson Bee roughly wiped his tears. “I must be real drunk. What the hell did I just say...”
The door creaked open.
“Who?”
Crimson Bee cast away the can and drew a pistol from his waist, aiming it at the door. Although he was now a regular human, he still carried a weapon—it wasn’t so much to protect himself with, but to give himself a swift end if other elite monsters came after him.
“Don’t shoot! It’s me!” Quiet Book walked into the room.
“Quiet Book?” Crimson Bee said in surprise. “Why are you here?”
“I stay to take care of them.” Quiet Book smiled. “My family’s gone, and I have nowhere to go.”
Realizing it was a false alert, Crimson Bee put away his gun and bent down to pick up the empty can.
“Why did you come back?” Quiet Book walked to the beds and deftly checked the drips and the two unconscious men’s vitals.
Crimson Bee sat back down. “I just swung by to have a look.”
“Lies!” Wandering Tune showed up at the door, carrying a bag of food and drinks.
“Old Tune, what is this?” Crimson Bee said with surprise, a pleasant one.
“What do you think?” Wandering Tune laughed bitterly. “It’s going to be twelve soon. I couldn’t sleep, so I figured it would be better to hold a vigil here.”
“Same for us.” Chuckling, Ting Ting came in holding Wang Weiyan’s hands.
Wandering Tune called out to the door. “Come on in, everyone! Enemies haven’t infiltrated. It’s just Crimson Bee and Quiet Book.”
A whole pack of people swarmed in: Bumblebee, Small Luo, Veggie, Lying Wood, Muzitu, Rewind, Lin Fu, Canary, Major Fortune, Citrus, Cold Cicada, Jiang Hao, Tofu, John Doe, Sunny, and Donxote, in addition to Wandering Tune. All the now regular humans had come.
Crimson Bee didn’t know how to voice his complicated feelings when he looked at them.
“Haha, we all share the same sentiment, worrying over our companions on the battlefield.” Lying Wood adjusted his glasses. “So we organized everyone in the group chat to hold a vigil here.”
“We sent you a message, Brother Bee, but you didn’t respond or take our calls.” Bumblebee looked much more healthy and spirited now. It seemed that he had enjoyed his time as a regular human.
Crimson Bee took out his phone. “Fuck, it’s dead!”
Lin Fu looked around. “Where’s Dr. Jia? Joining the battle?”
“Of course not,” said the female receptionist at the main hall, joining the conversation naturally. Her colleague was with her at the door. “He’s in his lab, saying he needs to use the precious time to do research.”
