Chapter 77: Chapter 77

Keelion pulled over in front of the building, and Alexis was quick to get down. She suppressed the giddy smile that emerged on her face and hurried into the building, making her way towards her mother’s apartment.

Keelion, who was following behind her, furrowed his brows. Where were the men he had stationed at the front of the building?—the security? They were nowhere to be found, but he didn’t think they were slacking off. They were working for him, he was sure they wouldn’t dare do something that stu—

A sudden scream from Alexis erupted out of the blue, prompting him to quickly rush off down the marble hallway and make his way towards the door that led into the apartment.

He moved inside and came to a stop with only three steps taken. He slowly lowered his head, stilling at the pool of blood on the floor, one which had trickled so far that it had gone beneath his shoes.

His eyes flickered rapidly and he took a moment to register the situation before raising his head towards the chair where Eleni was bound. Her body was hunched and lifeless, the blood coming from her.

She was...dead...

Alexis stared blankly at her mother’s corpse with pure horror in her eyes. She slowly turned and looked at Keelion who glanced at her.

A chuckle bubbled out of her. "I don’t...understand."

"Alexis—"

"Is this a joke? A prank or something like that?" she asked, hoping for a positive answer from him. "I’m sure it is. My mother wouldn’t hurt me, you know. She’s probably messing with me because we haven’t seen each other in a while."

Her lips cracked into a smile and she turned, staggering towards her mother, the red liquid under her feet, sticky. She fell to the floor on her knees in front of her and shakily lifted her hands, cupping her mother’s cheek.

She’d turned cold. She was cold—too cold.

"Mom..."

No response.

"Mom...say something to me, please..."

Silence.

"Please.... Y-you said you wanted to see me. W-we were supposed to see. W-why aren’t you saying anything to me now? Are you angry with me? Is that why? I’m sorry that I—"

"Alexis." Keelion approached her and grabbed her by the arm to pull her off the bloody floor, but she smacked his hand away, turning her head to glare at him.

"Don’t touch me!" she snapped at him. "Can’t you see? Can’t you see she’s not saying anything to me?"

"Alexis, get up. Just come with me."

"NO," she affirmed, eyes dangerously blown wide at him. "Don’t try to make me leave, Keelion. Leave me alone. I’m not getting out of here until my mother speaks to me."

Keelion stared at her and shifted his gaze to her mother’s lifeless body. A pang of pain—something familiar he hadn’t felt in a long time hit his chest and he quickly turned his back on them, shoulders rising and falling in heavy breathing.

His gaze was lowered—he didn’t dare lift it, because the second he did, his eyes rose to the ceiling of the room against his will, the image of his own mother who’d taken her own life hanging before his eyes.

Nausea rose to his throat and he stormed out of the room, bending by the wall outside the hallway as if to vomit everything he had in him at that moment.

She was killed.

Someone killed her.

From the second he saw her corpse, he knew it was murder and whoever killed her had a grudge against her. He or she didn’t just kill her, but they stabbed her several times and even tortured her. The bruises on her face...

Sudden sounds of someone slapping herself, made him lift his head and he quickly rushed back into the room, only to halt at the sight of Alexis who was slapping herself against the cheek over and over again.

"Alexis!" He hurried towards her and grabbed both her hands, yanking her roughly to her feet. "What the fuck do you think you’re doing?"

She shakily looked at him with horror-stricken eyes. "My mom...my mom is not dead, is she...Keelion?"

"Alexis, you need to leave with—"

"It’s just a dream, right? You’ll wake me up from it, right?" The tears in her eyes broke, spilling down her face. "Y-you don’t understand. She’s everything I have. She’s all I have. Keelion, she can’t leave me. W-what am I going to do? I don’t...I don’t..."

Her breathing grew rapid, shallow gasps fleeing her mouth. Her chest rose and fell too quickly as if she couldn’t get enough air and Keelion, who was holding onto her, looked panicked, because he wasn’t sure what was happening to her.

"Alexis, Alexis, breathe. Look at me, breathe. Alexis, breathe!" He wasn’t sure she could hear him, because her lips trembled, her body going numb all of a sudden in his grip.

Tightness clenched Alexis’s chest and her eyes darted around, wide and unfocused welling with more tears that broke and spilled down her cheek.

She was suffocating. Hyperventilating.

Keelion watched her grab her own throat.

Her vision had gone bad, and so did her head that felt light. Panic grew tighter in his chest, but before he could get her under control, she collapsed, passing out backward.

She almost fell with a heavy thud, but he caught hold of her, immediately lifting her into his arms. Shit! Shit! Shit!

"Alexis? Alexis, can you hear me?" He looked at her face. She didn’t respond. She was breathing, but she was unconscious.

He quickly left the room and made his way out of the building towards the car. He sat her down in the passenger front seat and plucked his phone out of the pocket of his slacks.

[Sir?] It was Augustus’s voice.

"Come to the apartment, right now. Hospital, get her mother to the hospital. Don’t waste any time!"

It was clear Augustus was confused on the other side of the call, but he obeyed regardless.

Keelion ended the call and shut the door of the car. He rushed back into the building, into the apartment, and towards Eleni. Then he proceeded to untie the rope binding her.

He caught her body before it could fall and lifted her into his arms. Then he properly laid her down on the couch. His fingers gently and caringly pushed her hair off her face.

It hadn’t even been long since he spoke with her, and just like his own mother, she was...gone in the blink of an eye. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Who...killed her?
