Chapter 31: Chapter 31

Keelion parked the car in front of a building and Alexis, who was seated on the passenger side, peeked up at it.

"Is...this the place?"

"Yes," Keelion said slowly. "Get down."

She retook a glance. Wasn’t it a bit too luxurious? This looked like something they’d pay a huge amount of money to even lodge for a day.

Ten thousand Weils? Thirty?

"Girl, get down from the car!"

Sereia, who was seated on her lap, snapped her out of her thoughts.

Alexis reached for the seatbelt and unbuckled it. She opened the door and stepped down, slamming it shut. Then she walked over to Keelion, following behind him as he approached the glass door.

The security at the front door bowed.

"Alpha."

Keelion stepped inside with her, took the elevator to the second floor, and all the while, all she could think about was how too expensive this place was. Not even her father, despite how rich he was, could own an apartment building this expensive-looking.

How did the occupants pay for rent? Probably—

"What are you thinking so hard about?" Keelion’s sudden grip came around her curls, pulling, but not too hard, still enough to make her wince. "I can see smoke rising out of the center of your head."

She glanced at him, but before she could respond, the doors chimed open and he stepped out first. She moved behind him past a few other doors before they stopped in front of a particular one.

"Go on, knock. Your mother is in there."

There was reluctance. Was her mother really here? If she knocked, would she really see her mom?

"She’s definitely in there, kid, I can smell her scent," Sereia said to her, softly.

Alexis nodded and left three light knocks on the door.

A few seconds and the lock turned, the door opening slightly.

"Mom?" Alexis stepped into the frame.

Eleni stared at her for a few seconds, almost as if she thought she was dreaming before her eyes fluttered. She reached out her hand touching her cheek to make sure it was real and then her lips bloomed into a bright smile.

"Alexis."

"Mom."

"Come, come, come inside." She shifted aside, letting her in. But Alexis glanced behind her, only to find that Keelion was no longer there. He was gone as if he hadn’t come with her in the first place.

"Where did he...go?" She stepped into the apartment and shut the door behind her. Then followed her mother to the living room.

"How did you get here?" Eleni asked.

She responded, "Keelion brought me."

"Keelion? The alpha?"

As soon as she nodded, Eleni widely smiled.

"What a gentleman."

"Huh?"

"He’s a gentleman." She was serious with her words. "I thought since he was the alpha, he’d be...you know. But he’s such a gentleman. Did he leave?"

"I think so."

"Well, that’s a shame. I just finished making breakfast. Are you hungry?"

Alexis couldn’t even answer. She just sat staring at her mother who was smiling a lot at her.

"Mom..." she whispered on a jagged breath, eyes slowly watering, then dumps of feelings melting into a puddle within her. "I missed you... I missed you so much."

Eleni smiled wider at her, and she broke down even more, standing up to run into her arms.

"I thought...I thought things would never work out. I was so scared." Even when Keelion had told her, her mother was perfectly fine, she hadn’t completely believed it, still very much worried.

But walking in here right now, seeing her mother all fine and okay, radiant even more than she had been when they lived with her father. She didn’t look stressed out anymore, if anything she appeared rather happy, and the relief that had washed over her was too overwhelming for her to even comprehend.

It’d been almost a month since they last saw each other.

So she cried hard and wrapped her arms around her mother like she didn’t want to ever let go. "I love you. I love you so much," she croaked, crumbling to pieces.

"Calm down, honey, I’m here, I’m right here." Eleni’s hand lifted, wrapping around her in a warm hug. "I told you, even if the whole world abandons you, I will never leave you. I’ll always be with you, I’ll make sure you’re fine because even if they say otherwise, you have every right to exist just like everyone else does."

"Shhh...it’s okay, my baby," she whispered, stroking her curls and her face. She tried to pull back, but Alexis wouldn’t let her, holding her like she could disappear if she let go.

Eleni let out a soft sigh. "It’s okay... It’s really okay."

After a few more minutes of hysterical crying, Alexis was finally seated on a floor pillow, a table in between her and her mother. There were delicacies on the table, scrambled eggs, bacon, and more.

"Are you living okay over there?" EIeni asked.

She chewed on the piece of scrambled egg in her mouth, while nodding. "I do. It’s not too bad."

"I can see that. You’ve added a little weight." freewebnøvel.com

"I have?" She widened her eyes.

EIeni half smiled. "Hm...not very noticeably, but I can see it. So it’s a good thing. You’re eating well."

"I am. Keelion lets me eat with him."

"He does?" Eleni asked. But then her smile grew. "He really is taking good care of you. I’m glad... I’m really glad. You’re in safe hands, I was so worried."

Alexis blinked at her. "Are you going to cry now?"

"And continue from where you stopped?"

They both chuckled, before Eleni shifted closer to her, scooping up a full spoon of rice to feed her. "Don’t ever starve, no matter what, okay? I need you to be healthy, always."

Alexis nodded. "I know."

"Will you promise me that?"

She glanced at her. "Mom, I’m not a kid. Of course, I promise. I can take care of myself."

"Are you sure? You’ve always been with me and—"

"Mom, relax. I won’t make you worry." She stood to her feet and spread her arms. "Look at me, I look perfectly fine, don’t I? I even have more confidence now."

"I suppose you do. Still—"

"Ouch." Alexis winced at the slight sting under her feet. She’d forgotten and as soon as she sat back down, her mother moved closer to her. "What’s going on? Does your feet hurt?"

She shook her head. "It’s not that. I did a lot of work I’m not usually used to, so my feet hurt. That’s all. I’m not hurt, I promise."

"Are you sure? Alexis please..."

Alexis nodded, sighing. "I am."

"Let me see."

She groaned. "Mom, come on, that isn’t necessary. I’m seriously fine. If I’m hurt, you know I would let you know. You always treat me like a kid, I’m twenty-two."

"It doesn’t matter, you’re my kid." EIeni clicked her tongue at her and picked up a fresh spoon of salad, shoving it into her mouth. "There you go, eat more."

Alexis chewed, nodding her head. "I really won’t make you worry. I mean it."

Eleni paused to look at her.

She mumbled. "I know you won’t. I just...want you to take care of yourself. I’m scared sometimes because I don’t know when things could possibly go wrong. You’re all I have and I don’t want to lose you."

"Mom..." Alexis slowed down her chewing. "Nothing will go wrong. Everything is fine, they will always be. There is no need to be scared, okay...? I’ll come back to you eventually safe and sound, so don’t worry, alright?"

When Eleni wouldn’t give her a definite response, she smiled and threw an arm over her shoulder. "Let’s eat together, yeah?"

"It’s fine, eat, Alexis. I—"

"Please." She picked up a toasted sandwich and brought it to her mouth. "Ahhh, you eat some too."

"No, no it’s—"

"Say ahhhhh."

"Alexis."

"Just have some. If you’re not eating, then I’m not."

"Fine..." Eleni finally relented and opened her mouth, taking a bite. Alexis beamed, and let out a soft sigh as she slowly dropped her head against her shoulder, wrapping her arms around her.

"I’ll spend the night with you today. But I’ll leave in the morning."

"Is that so..." The devastation in Eleni’s voice could be heard.

She caressed her hand. "I’ll visit again, just like today. A-and I’ll also get a cell phone so that we could call, okay?"

"How would you do that?"

"I’ll figure out a way!" She patted her chest.
