Chapter 29: Selene is alive...

Xavier POV

"So, you’re just going to let her go?" Lucius said as he came to stand beside me.

I just stood and watched the cars escorting Lycan Noah, my uncle, and Olivia to the airport. I was angry. Angry at myself, at Olivia for leading me on, and then at my uncle Noah. I didn’t know if I deserved to be this angry, but something didn’t sit well with me.

One moment, I was passionately loving Olivia, and the next, she was my uncle’s fiancée.

"What do you mean?" I asked, turning to face Lucius, who had a dark expression on his face.

"Olivia," he said sullenly, "Are you going to let her go, just like that? All that loving and sparks I saw flying was nothing?"

"Seems so," I shrugged. "She belongs to him now and the girls." I sounded sad.

"Isn’t it weird that the father of her kids is very much present in her life and she’s jumping in bed with another man? Does it make sense?" Lucius scoffed.

"I don’t know, Lucius," I sighed and started walking towards the pack house. "I have a lot going on right now. Our pack is a mess; I got into a huge fight with Belinda yesterday and she’s practically insisting I marry her,".

"Well, are you going to?" Lucius was hot on my trail.

"I don’t know," I said, increasing my pace.

"You don’t know?" Lucius scoffed. "Don’t even think about it, Xavier Steele. You cannot marry the same woman that caused the death of your wife. Why are you even speaking to her in the first place? I thought we agreed that you’d let her leave for good?"

"Too many questions, Lucius," I busied myself with tidying my desk for want of doing something. I didn’t think I could argue with Lucius today.

"Well, you could begin by answering one at a time. Belinda is not even an option, Xavier. You can be with any woman except Belinda. You had a shot with Olivia but you ruined it the first chance you got,".

"I ruined it?" my eyes widened in surprise as I raised my head to stare at him. "What are you talking about?"

"Didn’t you notice both of you have so much in common? She drinks mugwort shot every single second. Her children love you and you choose to ignore all those signs?"

"She doesn’t belong to me, Lucius!" I said through gritted teeth, "Do you expect me to fight my uncle and claim her or something?"

"The night you fucked her, you would have marked her. Is it that hard to figure?" Lucius’s eyes glowered with anger.

He always got agitated whenever anything related to Selene came up, starting from the time we lost her until now. What was more surprising was how he was ready to suddenly accept Olivia, a woman who I’d known for only a week.

"You’re so inconsistent, Lucius," I sighed "One minute, you’re breathing down my neck about women I should be with and shouldn’t be with and the next, you’re scolding me for not being with a woman I’ve only just met,".

"I just want you to open your eyes and see for yourself what is right in front of you,".

Anger surged through me and in a flurry, I swept the documents on my desk to the floor. My chest was heaving as I crossed the room to where Lucius stood, his gaze unwavering.

"I’m sick and tired of you nagging me every single time. From the time Selene was here until now, I’ve not had rest. Can you just let me be?"

"And you think I enjoy doing this?" Lucius challenged, staring back at me without flinching "If you know the number of times that I’ve wanted to quit but I stayed back because I am bound to you no matter what and my loyalty lies with you,". fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"Then leave," I fired back. "I only just got my life back and you’ve not let me have one moment of peace. I’m tired of it all. I’m tired of having the same fucking dreams for more than a year and not being able to see her face. I’m scared that one day, my body will no longer take these Mugwort shots and I’ll burn away. I have worries, Lucius and I’m sorry if I don’t lay them on the table every day,".

"You should at least make an effort," he said quietly. "If you had listened to me all the years I tried to warn you, perhaps we wouldn’t have gone through half of what we’re going through. By the way, there’s an invitation to the Alpha summit that I dropped on your desk... This is the first time in three years that you’ve been invited. Don’t mess it up,".

With that, he turned on his heels and retreated out of the room.

I hurled the flowered jar on my desk on the wall opposite me as my chest burned with anger. As the jar hit the wall and exploded into different shreds, my eyes caught something glowing that had fallen out of the jar.

I squinted my eyes as I stared at the direction of the shine. Picking my way through the mess in the room I created, I stopped when I got to it. Lowering my frame, I picked up the shining object.

It turned out to be a paper of some sort. The lightest paper I’ve ever seen or held. Surprised and trying to make sense of what I was seeing, I raised it to the sky, wondering why it looked so familiar.

My eyes caught another thick document lying on the ground next to the pile of broken pieces of vase. I stooped to pick it too. When I held it in my hand, it was a copy of a divorce agreement.

Lucius had told me that before she left, she had served me divorce papers. So, this must be it.

My heart raced as I flipped through the document until the last page that had what seemed to be Selene’s signature. Beside it, the other side was blank because I had refused to sign the documents, too.

I looked from the divorce agreement to the lighter paper that still glowed. I turned it several times, trying to understand why it was empty but still shining. Picking my way to the table, I placed it on the table, then reached for the warm light lamp on the table and turned it on.

As soon as I did, a surprised gasp escaped my lips as I watched as words slowly began to etch by themselves on the paper. As the words slowly began to etch themselves on the paper, a surprised gasp escaped my lips and my heart nearly stopped when bright red words popped up.

"I, Selene Thorne Steele Luna of the Greyhound Pack—daughter of Alpha Thorne of the Golden Moon Pack and wife to Xavier Steele—Alpha of the Greyhound Pack... reject you, Alpha Xavier Steele as mate and husband. May your mark, a symbol of our bond, seize to be potent from this day and onwards".

This was a sandpaper. It was used for several kinds of rituals. So, this was why she had been able to leave. She had done the couple’s separation spells. That explains a lot of things now.

As I wondered at it, my eyes fell on the red, thick-covered journal sitting on my desk. I had never seen it before. Grabbing my seat closer to the desk, I propped on it and reached for the journal.

Inscribed on the front of it was Selene, all capitalized. Immediately, the room blurred and something flashed through my mind’s eyes. I saw myself giving this to long, slender arms. Then the vision faded away.

I opened my eyes as I stared at the journal. Was this a gift from me to Selene, or what? What was it doing on my desk? Lucius had assured me that there was nothing of Selene’s that was in the house. So, where did this come from?

I turned it around, contemplating if I should open it or not, and wondered why I had given her this.

"Perhaps you could remember if you read a little," a still voice suddenly said.

I jerked with surprise as my eyes turned around the room, looking for who was with me.

"Who’s there?" I asked, running my eyes all over the room.

"It’s me," the voice said again.

"You! Who?" I asked, staring all over the room.

I heard a deep sigh as the voice spoke up. "Go to the mirror," it commanded.

Curious, I dragged myself to the half-length mirror at the corner of my office and stood in front of it. In less than a minute, I stood. The mirror darkened and a Big Grey Wolf appeared in front of it.

It was Colton, my wolf, but he looked different.

"Colton?" I stared at it.

"Yes, it is me," he breathed. "Why do you look like you don’t know who I am?" he asked.

"I’m looking at the black stripes running down both eyes and your chest and is it me or do you look bigger? Anyone would have mistaken you for a Lycan. What happened to you, Colton? You left without saying a word,".

"One question at a time, Xavier," he sighed "Our mate got taken from us suddenly, it’s only normal I take a sabbatical but these past days of being around her, had helped us and somehow, her energy woke me up,".

I was taken aback. My mate was dead. Did the sabbatical make him forget?

"Colton," I said tentatively, "Selene died. Perhaps her wolf came to you?"

"No," he shook his head. "She came here. She was with you a few days ago. There’s absolutely no way we could get her energy if she wasn’t with you physically,".

I was confused now.

"What are talking about, Colton?" I arched my brow at him. "Selene is dead, except you’re talking about Olivia. She’s the only woman that I’ve been with since last week and now, she belongs to someone else,".

A soft sigh escaped from Colton. It was as if he was tired of talking.

"The journal... check it," he said quietly.

I stared at the journal in my hand, hesitating before opening the heavy cover.

Today is the happiest day of my life. I finally met my mate

And we’re to wed tomorrow. Hopeful that we can heal each other.

Was the first thing that greeted me when I opened it. It was the date of our wedding, alongside a picture of me pinned at the bottom part of it.

"Go to the last three pages," Colton said quietly.

I flipped through it until I got to the part he had suggested.

Can’t believe I’m back to Greyhound after almost three years.

But not as Selene Steele because she’s long gone... but as Olivia.

I froze as the book clattered to the ground. Selene... is alive.
