Chapter 204: Go scot-free...

Selene POV

I stared at my phone long after the call with Xavier ended wondering if he understood that I was asking for help. He was the only one who had some power now to help me or maybe sway his mother.

Just like me, Xavier was an important part of Nora. I’ve seen her go berserk with him being ill for a few seconds. With him, she drops her ironclad heart, so maybe his presence at Moon Whisper could be a good thing for me. I have yet to hear from Reid no see him since last night after he came to our dungeon.

There was no news regarding Noah and Kragen was still quiet on me. For the first time, I felt truly alone with no one to run to. All I wanted to do at this point was cry my eyes out and lay sprawled on the ground until help came but I have to keep the girls alive... I have to stay alive. I couldn’t afford to die now... if my children could go through so much with me alive, I shuddered to think what they might pass through if I am no more.

I also knew my call was tapped, which was why I was being careful with asking for help also wishing that whoever was on the other side wouldn’t read too much meaning into it. I stroked my growing belly with a sad smile on my face. Was I destined to always have my children in tough situations?

My gaze fell on the girls sleeping peacefully, resting longer on Maeve... she had been so angry today... the angriest I’d seen her and I felt every emotion. It was as if her soul was bare and I could read and see inside of her. All her anger was directed towards me and Nora... me especially and I couldn’t help but wonder what I could have done to my child for her to harbor such anger towards me.

Also, I’ve never felt as connected as I was to them as I did last night. In that dungeon, I could feel their heartbeat... I could tell if they were alright or not. Everything was open and readable. When the Grand Lycan had come in to see us... he was telling the truth when he said, he had been preoccupied. I could feel his heartbeat and also see how worried he was about something.

Shaking my head, I tried to rid my mind of those thoughts. Right now, all I wanted to do was to save myself and my babies and I knew no one was going to become my advocate. Since yesterday, I understood what Nora meant by the people will never align with a woman. All the guards, the women who had my support before had deserted me. It was sad and painful but what could I do?

There was a knock on the door. Even without me perceiving the scent or seeing the person, I knew instantly that it was Brooke. "Come in!" I said gruffly, pulling myself into a presentable condition before the door opened wide and she sauntered in. "To what do I owe this pleasant surprise?" I said sarcastically.

"You’re still the same as before," she hissed dropping on the sofa in the room. "One would think a few hours in the dungeon would work on your attitude but you’re still the same as before, very disappointing,".

"Did you come here to gloat?" I asked quietly staring at her "Or did you come as Nora’s messenger? Wait a sec!" I folded my arms across my chest "I heard there’s a talk of you becoming a new Luna in my stead, right?"

"Well, seems you’ve put your ears to good use for the first time in forever. You’re not wrong..." she smiled coyly. "The pack elders and officials have decided one of their kind should become Luna instead of a weak, emotionally unstable alpha-blooded werewolf. Of course, we appreciate everything you’ve done for us and the pack but it’s time to bow out gracefully,".

"Well!" I laughed "I am not leaving, Brooke. Go back and tell your task masters that it’ll take more than just throwing me into the dungeon or denying me access to my mate to scare me. I’ve died and be born again. Nothing really scares me and bold of you to think that they really want you?" I clucked my tongue giving her a pitying look. "They just need a figurehead... one who will do what she’s told without thinking and who else can play the role better than you,".

"Don’t you dare!" her eyes reddened with anger "At least, I won’t be kicked out like a common slave today,".

"That is IF!" I chuckled rising to my feet as I crossed the room to get a drink for myself. "IF is the word, Brooke... would they be able to chase me away? The documents I was meant to sign... do you think they’re valid? Just because Noah is incapable of being the king now doesn’t mean that law and order should not be upheld. Drink?" I asked her.

"I’m fine," she murmured with confusion on her brows.

"You know!" I sauntered back to my former position, "I was going to leave quietly...just go and probably go back to Xavier since my girls were with him or something but as usual, I was given just another reason to fight back. When you become a mother, I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean. No one messes with my children and go scot free. I will move the universe to make sure anyone who puts them in sad situation is punished but..." I took a sip from my water "You would relate if you were truly pregnant,".

Fear crept into her eyes for a second but she rose to her feet, with a dry chuckle "That’s old news, Selene... try something else. No one will believe you at this point,".

"Oh! They will," I laughed "Anyways, you should leave while you still can because I’ll make sure you’re punished severely. The odds may flip anytime soon, Brooke and you might be on the losing end. You and I know you’re not pregnant...so... save yourself and leave but if I see you in the judging hall, I will expose you. The world will see you for who you truly are and is that really what you want?"

She stared at me for a few minutes and then laughed "For a second, you had me there but I just remembered you don’t have a Noah and no one else is on your side, So, good luck," she said and sauntered out of my room, giving me a wink. She wasn’t entirely wrong, except... she was.
