68: Chapter 68 Tomb

68 -68 Tomb

A night without words.

After a night’s rest, everyone had recovered their spirits.

Despite a minor incident last night, with the destination right ahead, there was absolutely no way to stop and turn back at this point.

Perhaps it was because all the mummies were killed in last night’s attack, today we encountered no mummies on our way, and arrived smoothly at the tomb of the Ancient Fallen Empire.

A massive pyramid, estimated to be two hundred meters in height, even taller than the largest pyramid on Earth, and along with many tomb buildings, it composed a super-large tomb complex.

Not to mention the mummies animated due to curses along the way, according to Tassera’s judgement, those curses all originated from the tomb in front of us.

Just by looking at the scale of the tomb, such a grand tomb definitely contains at least one…

impossible to assess, but Leon was sure it was not something we could covet lightly.

“What are you looking at?” Tassera said, “We’re about to go in.”

“Let’s go, let’s go.” Everyone was impatient.

The Barbarian charged into one of the tomb buildings first, pushed aside the sand filling the room, found a bracelet, gave it a gentle bite, then took it out without any tooth marks, indicating the bracelet wasn’t made of gold, not quite satisfying, but still pocketed it.

With the Barbarian taking the lead, everyone else sprang into action, even the Brass Dragon joined the treasure-hunting group with great enthusiasm, no longer in the mood for chatting.

Compared to the others who were filled with excitement about the gold and silver treasures buried within the tomb, Tassera’s attention was on the inscriptions on the walls of the tomb buildings, which Leon couldn’t understand.

Tassera noticed that Leon was captivated by the statues carved on each of the pillars of the tomb building.

Compared to Leon’s layman’s enthusiasm, she knew much more.

“In the Ancient Fallen Empire, apart from the Three Pillars of Gods, there are these animal gods.”

“Sis, cat, the goddess with a lioness head and a human body, protector of the household.”

“Ku, ant, god of construction.”

“Kai, crocodile, god of storms and strength, always surrounded by dark energy.”

“Nei, jackal, god of death, also the judge of the Netherworld, justly sentencing the dead, sending the good to Reed Field, while the wicked fall into the Abyss where their souls burn and are consumed.”

Tassera recounted them familiarly.

Leon didn’t speak, for he’d long known this world was based on the D&D universe.

He knew that those setting books could serve as references to a certain extent, like the Red Dragon still being the tyrant of the mountains, the Blue Dragon known for its wrinkled ears and massive horn, and the Brass Dragon’s love for conversation, but that’s all, suddenly there appeared a whole lot of unknown gods.

A scream suddenly rose.

Leon and Tassera exchanged glances and ran towards the direction of the scream, where they saw a giant scorpion had grasped the bard with its pincers.

It was a giant scorpion Leon had never seen in any setting book, made of stone, metal, varnished wood, and bone, especially its tail which was tipped with a giant’s skull and metal barbs.

“Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion!” The dreadful creature did not scare Tassera; the Blue Dragon’s face was full of excitement.

As a Colorful Dragon of Order Evil, Tassera was indifferent to the bard grasped by the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion, but the others would not stand idly by.

Without waiting for Leon to act, the Barbarian roared and charged into Frenzy State, the Halfling Wanderer looked for opportunities, the Black Contract Mage pulled out an oil lamp for some unknown purpose, but in the end, it was the Brass Dragon who acted fastest, already swinging his sword to chop off one of the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion’s legs.

Leon didn’t want to charge too far forward, fearing that one careless move would result in the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion revealing his true form with a flick of its tail.

He drew his half-sword, deciding not to make a move without a good opportunity.

Tassera originally planned to stand by and watch, but seeing Leon pull out his weapon, she finally decided to take action, firing a Magic Arrow.

A crackling cyan beam of energy shot toward the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion, forming a continuous arc of electricity between them.

Together, they quickly took down the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion, but the poor bard was severely injured and on the brink of death until they bandaged the wounds and poured several Healing Potions down his throat, finally restoring his normal complexion.

“We must act together,” Brass Dragon said gravely.

“Just now, Fermo was running around alone and accidentally got attacked by the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion hiding beneath the sand.”

“You guys can go together; I want to move with my brother,” Tassera grabbed Leon’s hand.

“Your goal is the gold and silver treasures; ours is knowledge.

We’re not companions on the same path.”

Blue Dragon, unconcerned with everyone else’s grim expressions, pulled Leon along and left.

Of course, the Ancient Tomb Giant Scorpion was not the end.

Many Ancient Tomb Guards began to crawl out of the sand; some were dried corpses and skeletons wearing armor.

Time passed, uncounted.

“We’re being watched,” Tassera suddenly said.

“We probably need to leave now; if we don’t go, terrifying monsters will appear.”

No sooner had Blue Dragon spoken than a deafening roar rang out.

Leon and Tassera ran out of the tomb structure to find that Brass Dragon had returned to Dragon Form and was colliding head-on with a huge creature with the body of a lion and the head of a man—the Male-faced Sphinx.

“I’ll hold it off, you all run,” Brass Dragon shouted.

Leon noticed that the Male-faced Sphinx didn’t seem to care too much about the Brass Dragon and kept watching him and Tassera.

That was a creature with a Challenge Level comparable to that of an adult Red Dragon.

He decisively activated Gathering Form and Scattering Energy to flee and looked up to see Blue Dragon had already taken a lead with Mysterious Steps.

Running and running, they finally left the tomb far behind and could stop.

Panting against a large rock, Leon thought that the endurance in human form was truly mediocre.

At the same time, he felt a sense of relief; indeed, there were many places beyond his ability to meddle in, but as long as one didn’t act recklessly and was willing to flee from danger, it was generally safe.

“That was a fallen Male-faced Sphinx guarding that tomb,” Tassera looked at the pyramid with regret etched on her face.

“We must not get close to it again.”

“A Male-faced Sphinx…” Leon laughed.

“Alright, even if we both return to Dragon Form and attack together, it’s probably not easy to defeat.”

“The main problem is we don’t know if there are other monsters.” Tassera looked at the storm above the tomb that was becoming increasingly frenetic; Brass Dragon was being tossed around chaotically.

“I suspect there might be a Demigod Mummy inside that tomb…

if not a Demigod Mummy, something of a similar caliber.”

Leon shrugged.

Seeing Brass Dragon stumbling out of the storm, he was glad that he hadn’t recklessly entered the tomb in Dragon Form.

“What do we do now?” Leon asked.

“After all the trouble of coming here, do we just go back like this…

isn’t that a bit anticlimactic?”

“What else?” Tassera retorted.

“I don’t mind,” Leon said.

“Anyway, you promised that as long as I come out with you, you’d help me make the Stone Magic Statue…

Ah, Brass Dragon is flying over.”

Wounded all over, Brass Dragon flew over.

Seeing Leon and Tassera, he panted heavily and rumbled, “Yes, I’m Eggon, the same Eggon you know…

that was a transformation; this is my true form…

that corrupted Sphinx is about to catch up; let me take you away.”

“Sphinxes are tasked with guarding tombs or temples; they won’t leave their guarded place to give chase,” Tassera, well-informed, stated.

Brass Dragon clearly hesitated for a moment, then insisted, “That Sphinx is different…

look at my injuries.

Would I still deceive you?”

“There’s no time to explain; we need to leave…

don’t resist,” Brass Dragon said, stretching out his claws to try and grab Tassera.

His plan was simple: to first capture the troublesome female Mage.

Leon watched Brass Dragon, roughly understanding what the Brass Dragon intended to do—to bring them back to its lair for a chat.

Could it be that this adventure wasn’t about the Ancient Fallen Empire’s tombs, but this Brass Dragon was the real highlight?
