Chapter 81: Eighty, view the room

Aunt Chen nodded in agreement and then thought aloud, "Over at Black Clothes Alley, there seems to be a house for sale. That house was built at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and I heard it was previously owned by a merchant. However, a few years ago during the crackdown, the house was confiscated, and now an old man lives there. Last time I visited Zhihe’s Home, I heard from Zhihe that this elderly man wants to sell the house, but the price certainly won’t be cheap." Although it pained her heart to think of Luo Shu and her siblings moving out, Luo Shu’s thought process was correct; after all, the three siblings had grown up, and living together was definitely inconvenient.

"Really? Then I’ll go have a look with you," Luo Shu said excitedly. Money was naturally not a concern for her, as not only did she have cash, but she also had several boxes of gold bars in her space, so buying a house was definitely not an issue.

"Great! Let’s go then," Aunt Chen said with a smile and a nod. She was going to pass by that place on her way to Zhihe’s Home anyway, and looking didn’t necessarily mean buying. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"Sister, I would like to go too, is that alright?" Luo Shan asked eagerly from the side.

"What are we waiting for? Let’s go!" Luo Shu said, smiling as she took Luo Shan by the hand and walked out with Aunt Chen.

Black Clothes Alley wasn’t far from Aunt Chen’s house, with just two streets separating them, requiring at most a twenty-minute walk.

"That’s the house there," Aunt Chen pointed to a house with vermilion gates ahead.

Luo Shu looked up and saw a very high courtyard wall, but it was still possible to see the house inside the yard from outside. The house was a Ming and Qing style two-story wooden building, with black wooden doors and windows that were beautifully carved, thick but exquisitely elegant. Even without seeing the full scope of the courtyard, she was already very fond of it.

"Let’s go inside and have a look," Luo Shu walked up and knocked gently on the vermilion gates.

After a short while, an elderly man with graying temples and a slightly bent waist came forward to open the door. Seeing the three visitors, he looked slightly surprised, "Who are you looking for?"

"Hello! I heard that you are planning to sell this house, is that so?" Luo Shu asked with a smile.

"Are you interested in buying?" The elderly man sized up Luo Shu’s face with his gaze. Although his eyes had become somewhat cloudy with age, they still carried a shard of sharpness.

"May I take a look inside first?" Luo Shu inquired. There seemed to be nothing extraordinary about this old man at first glance, but the aura emanating from him, coupled with the sharp glint within his eyes, revealed that he was no ordinary person. He must have once endured a baptism of blood.

The old man nodded slightly and stepped aside to make way.

Luo Shu thanked him with a smile and stepped into the courtyard.

The courtyard was spacious, combining the elegance and subtlety of Gusu Gardens and the grandeur and steadiness of Jinchen Courtyard.

To one side, a row of wooden frames was filled with a variety of potted plants—vibrantly green cacti, strong and stately podocarpus trees, graceful ink orchids, and some green plants whose names were unknown. Though it was already winter, the potted plants were still full of life, showing that the owner took great care of them.

Underneath a huge parasol tree in the courtyard, there was a stone table and four stone chairs. At that moment, there was a chessboard on the table, and several chess pieces were scattered across it haphazardly. Although it looked disorganized at first glance, there was a hidden complexity within the arrangement.

Luo Shu withdrew her gaze with satisfaction and smiled at the elderly man, "Sir, may I ask what your asking price is?" She felt the house suited her very well. Even if they had one room per sibling in the future, there were still extra rooms.

"Five thousand," the old man said calmly.

"That expensive?!" Aunt Chen exclaimed. Five thousand was an astronomical sum for her.

"Is there any chance the price could be lower?" Luo Shu asked with a smile. Five thousand wasn’t expensive, but naturally, it was best if she could get it for less.

"No!" The elder flatly refused.

With a slight smirk, Luo Shu stepped leisurely to the stone table under the phoenix tree, glancing at the chessboard, "If I solve this game of chess, would you sell it to me for less?"

The old man’s brow furrowed slightly, a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes, "We’ll talk about it once you’ve solved it." He had studied this particular game for several years and had always been unable to solve it. This young lady was truly boastful.

Luo Shu smiled confidently and reached out to pick up a chess piece from the board, moving it quickly. In her previous life, her grandfather was extremely fond of playing chess and would always drag her to play with him. Over time, her skills in chess naturally improved.

This chess arrangement, her grandfather had solved it for her once. She remembered that it had taken her nearly a month to solve this game back then.

The elder watched as Luo Shu moved the pieces, his surprise growing more and more pronounced.

When Luo Shu placed a black piece in the upper left corner, the once dead game suddenly sprang back to life.

She looked up at the old man, "Sir, please take a look!"

The elder glanced at the board and burst into hearty laughter, "Indeed, the new waves of the Nine Heavens River push the old ones forward! Young friend, might I have your name?" The chess game that he had studied for so many years had been so easily solved by someone else. He truly didn’t know whether to rejoice or sigh.

"Luo Shu," Luo Shu replied with a smile.

"The Luo surname?" The elder pondered for a moment and then revealed a knowing smile, "If you want this house, then let’s make it three thousand."

A hint of surprise flashed in Luo Shu’s eyes as she thanked him, "Then thank you very much, sir! But it’ll be a couple of days before I can give you the money." She did have money on her, but she needed an excuse to take it out.

"That’s alright! Whenever you have it, just bring it over," the old man said with a smile. He wasn’t short of money; he was selling the house because he was heading to a place he had long yearned for. Once he left, he would never come back in this lifetime. Thus, he wanted to sell the house to someone he found agreeable.

After saying goodbye to the elder, Luo Shu had Qian Wei, who was hiding in the shadows, take Luo Shan back, while she headed to the city center with Fu Yi.

"Fu Yi, do you know where the black market in Cloud City is?" Luo Shu asked as she looked at Fu Yi. She was certain Fu Yi knew about the black market.

"What are you going there for?" Fu Yi asked coldly.

"Of course, I’m going to sell something. I don’t have the money to buy a house," Luo Shu said matter-of-factly.

"That place is dangerous and not suitable for you," Fu Yi said in a cold voice. She was really naive, thinking the black market was like a vegetable market.

"Aren’t you with me? I trust you will protect me. Let’s go!" Luo Shu said with a smile, patting Fu Yi on the shoulder and striding forward.

Fu Yi frowned, his face stern as he followed. He decided he needed to let Luo Shu experience just how terrifying the black market was, to see if she would dare go to such a place again in the future.
