Chapter 32 - The Might's Engine

[You have received a new quest.]

[Conjure your Strength Core.]

[Reward: 20 000 EXP]

Rael stood in his personal virtual‑reality training room.

The chamber no longer resembled a prison cell.

It had expanded and now held simple furnishings.

Near the centre, where Rael's avatar always appeared, several desks with chairs supported transparent system windows.

Those panes stored data on Rael's abilities, recordings of his spars with Alexandra and her pupils, and notes on the Command Genesis Strength Core.

Opposite the desks lay an arena for simulations Rael could afford with his limited EXP.

In one corner, a small steel lion with a white mane lounged on a sofa, digitally reading manga.

Shiran had followed the usual path of an eastern‑media fan.

He began with anime, moved to manga, and would surely reach light novels next.

He watched anime only with Rael, so the little lion spilled spoilers during weekly episodes.

Rael did not mind.

He stole a quick glance at Shiran, then settled cross‑legged on the floor.

He had studied Command Genesis with Dominica and decided the system was vast.

Command Genesis let users shape cores from their own magical power and implant them like engines.

Some cores required outside tech or alien genes, yet the Strength Core relied only on talent.

Because of that, I'll forge my Strength Core from the Gauntlet of the Maker and the Maker's Core schemas.

Aware of his divine talent, Rael refused to waste opportunity.

The Strength Core would enhance his innate abilities, not replace them.

He closed his eyes.

Every ability was a strand of code woven through DNA.

Rael had deciphered the code of his innate abilities.

Now he needed a medium, the Strength Core, to link those strands and amplify them.

Magical power surged into his right arm, where the Gauntlet of the Maker rested and the door to the Maker's Core lay.

Lightning cracked over his hand, turning it into the gauntlet.

Heat pooled there as the Maker's Core awakened.

Rael overlaid the Command Genesis schema.

Pressure mounted.

His steel hand glowed red as if heated in a forge, while purple sparks snapped around it.

He braced against the floor, breathing hard yet keeping his eyes shut.

He felt an invisible wall.

Magical power is flooding in. Strength gathers in my hand. The schema works, yet what stops me?

He was blessed with talent, a system, and a new life he loved.

He wanted strength to honour the man he respected.

Then he realised the truth.

He was not following Milford's path.

Their values were close, but Rael had branched onto his own road.

I learned from Milford, but I am not him. I am a creator. The Strength Core is only inspiration. I must mold it into something unique. Create my own engine!

Silence struck the room.

All excess magical power vanished from Rael's arm.

Dominica and Shiran stared wide‑eyed.

An engine‑like roar burst from Rael and echoed like a beast's howl.

Steel crawled from his gauntlet up his body, encasing him before the silver melted into his skin.

Purple streaks shot outward, webbing across the room.

Rael coughed blood and clutched his chest.

"Lord Rael!" Shiran cried.

"Do not move!" Dominica shouted, freezing the lion. "Touch a strand and you will perish."

Shiran froze.

Dominica seldom raised her voice, and the lethal web surrounded him.

Rael's sweat‑drenched lips curved into a grin.

He whispered, "The Might's Engine... success."

He collapsed.

The engine faded and the strands vanished.

Dominica staggered over, still unsteady on human legs, and lifted him onto the sofa.

Shiran bounded to her side. "What happened to Lord Rael?"

"Lord Rael forged his own version of the Strength Core. When active it boosts him and his innate abilities so much that his body can endure only briefly," Dominica said while awarding the quest EXP.

"Can he endure longer with me?" Shiran asked.

"Yes."

"Epic! I can help Lord Rael more!"

In the real world, Sister Sophia faced a young orphan.

Recruiting new soldiers had grown difficult.

The child trembled through her pitch.

He mustered his courage. "I'll think about it!"

Then he bolted from her office.

Sister Sophia's face twisted.

"I'll think about it... Ever since Rael said that, they all parrot it and hide in the junkyard."

[Only those different from the rest will thrive.]

A memory flashed of a raven mask and a man's voice.

"He is different," she muttered, biting her lip. "He is the difference I must erase. Now."

She summoned Rael's friend and ordered him to fetch Rael.

Rael delayed the meeting for days until Sister Sophia stormed the dorm and, before terrified children, forced him to follow her.

"Come to my room, Rael," she said with a bright smile.

Rael hopped from his bunk and fell in step.

Once they left, the other children burst into tears.

As Rael studied Sophia's back, he used his ability to view her status.

Fewer entries were hidden now.

Why can't I see your race?

[Race: ???]

Are you really not human, Sister Sophia?
