Chapter 27 - The Important Question

We won... we really won against the Commander!

[Aye!]

[My deepest congratulations, Lord Rael.]

Haha! You too, Dominica! Shiran, good job following my plan. Perfect execution.

[Epic!]

But I think we should have expected some kind of allies in this trial, right?

Rael's plan was simple.

He split from Shiran to blindside Alexandra.

She never saw that coming.

Shiran darted among the crumbling pillars and scratched every point Dominica had calculated.

Their link kept the little lion exact.

Rael trusted his partner completely.

While Shiran worked, Rael slipped onto the floor the instant Alexandra looked away from the doors.

The hostages were frozen with fear.

Some could not move at all.

Everyone had to cooperate, yet time was short.

Rael linked his magnetic streaks to their hands and guided them forward.

His gentle pull forced them to move for their own safety.

Controlling them felt far from heroic, yet it was the only way.

He then stepped onto the battlefield, exposing his face to Alexandra.

He had to act fast, and he did.

He yanked Shiran with the gauntlet and the lion hit like a rocket.

Next he reversed the pull and hurled himself at Alexandra with even greater force.

He rooted himself, Shiran, and Alexandra to the floor long enough for the hostages to flee.

Alexandra still played the villain with relish.

She blasted through several floors and raced to intercept the soldiers.

Those soldiers, Rael's unexpected allies, became his true win condition.

[Given Alexandra von Karmesinthal's behavior and her opening attack on Lord Rael, missing her win condition is no fault of Lord Rael. Overlooking such a condition is natural. I believe Lord Rael should focus on the sensation of controlling others. This was his first use of that ability, and understanding it is crucial.]

[Aye!]

Yeah... I know. It felt strange, like an extension of my own body. Their arms just moved with my will, and that let them grasp their situation. Really strange.

Holding that power felt like holding their lives, and that weight worried him.

All tricks were fair against enemies, yet he feared the mark this power could leave on him.

The arena faded to a white cube that held only Rael and Alexandra.

She told him to follow her to her office at once.

Rael clenched his fists. "Understood, Ma'am!"

The trial had been fun, challenging, and full of action.

His EXP was low and his options thin, yet he wanted more tests.

He could also rerun the simulation in his own training room once he earned more EXP.

I should have gotten a huge EXP quest for this trial, right?

[Lord Rael gained something more valuable than experience points in this trial. Too many upgrades at once often backfire. Since Lord Rael has some abilities yet to be used against the Commander, an EXP quest will not be issued anytime soon.]

Fair enough, and thanks for unlocking the reverse pull when I spent five thousand EXP.

[Speed mattered more than honorifics.]

Love to hear that.

[...I am honored.]

Back in the office, Alexandra dropped into her chair and propped her boots on the desk.

She waved away several calls and Rael chuckled.

Alexandra faced him and he straightened.

"Taking risks is my second nature," she said.

[Sounds like an excuse.]

[Ayo, really, why?]

Quiet.

"I am taking you under my wing," she said. "I see no sign you are from Future Eden or sent by my rivals. Invading another virtual reality unnoticed is a risk even I might avoid. So tell me, do you want the strength to beat the devil from your orphanage, or will you chase a military career?"

Rael met her eyes. "I..."
