Chapter 74: Archery Class (1)

The late afternoon sun bathed the Academy’s courtyard as Adrian walked to the Weapon Training building.

The bell for the next class period had rung a few minutes ago, signaling the end of Forge Mastering and the start of Archery Fundamentals.

Taking quick steps up the stairs, Adrian soon located the class.

The room stretched out before him, an expansive room with a row of targets lined up at the far end, each backed by tightly packed straw bales.

The floor was covered in soft, padded mats, and the walls were adorned with racks of bows and quivers.

At the center of the room stood a tall man who could be described as handsome, with sharp cheekbones, a strong jaw, and dark hair pulled back into a neat ponytail.

His green eyes shone with focus as he held a sleek recurve bow, an arrow nocked and drawn, aimed at a target some fifty yards away.

The string twanged as he released it and the arrow danced in the air for some moments, acting like it was going to return, before changing direction and striking bullseye with a sharp thunk, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent room.

’Adrian was impressed by the show of skill from the man as the arrow had defied all laws of Physics. But it wasn’t something new to him in a world of magic like this.

Setting his bag on the floor, Adrian came to notice with surprise that except for him and the Instructor, the room was completely empty.

It wasn’t like he expected the class to be filled, but he knew of a girl called Lyra who was an archer, but she wasn’t there.

Before he could wonder if she had skipped or was also running late, the door swung open behind him and Lyra rushed in in heavy and uneven breaths.

Her slightly disheveled hair and the sweat on her face made it more obvious that she wasn’t okay with being late.

"Sorry for being late, Instructor! I had a class right before this, and I wasted some time on the class work."

The instructor lowered his bow and turned to face her with a calm, understanding nod.

"There’s no issue. There are no breaks between the class, so I don’t expect you to be here the moment the bell goes. Just settle in."

He gestured to the mats and Lyra went to sit on it, so did Adrian.

Lyra’s eyes flicked to Adrian, and a brief flash of recognition crossed her face. She gave a quick nod but said nothing, her attention returning to the instructor. freewёbnoνel.com

"I guess it’s just the two of you today. I’m Instructor Sam, and I’ll be guiding you through Archery Fundamentals. Let’s start with introductions, shall we?"

"Lyra," she said promptly, standing a little straighter.

"Adrian."

Sam’s eyes lingered on Adrian’s bag, which bulged slightly. "That your bow in there?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Adrian shook his head. "No, sir. It’s my weapon. It’s a gun."

Sam’s brow furrowed slightly at the unfamiliar term, but he didn’t press further. "A gun, you say? Does it shoot?"

Adrian nodded. "Yes, sir."

Sam gave a thoughtful nod, then addressed both of them.

"Alright, Lyra, Adrian. I know you’re here to master the bow and perhaps to learn powerful martial skills to go with them. But there’s something you need to understand. Master Von may have mentioned this, but weapon mastery is a serious commitment. At the Academy, you can only train in martial techniques from one school at a time."

Seeing their confused expressions, he clarified. "A school is a discipline centered on a specific weapon or combat style.

Archery, Swordsmanship, Spearmanship, and the rest of them — these are weapon schools. Then there’s the Body School, which focuses on unarmed combat. It’s rare for Knights to take that path, but it’s still powerful in its own way.

Choosing to learn Archery techniques means you can’t train in another school’s techniques simultaneously. So, are you both ready to commit to the Archery School?"

Lyra nodded immediately. "Yes, Instructor. I’m ready."

Adrian, however, hesitated. His gun wasn’t a bow, and he couldn’t see how archery-specific martial techniques would enhance its already formidable capabilities.

The weapon’s power was tied to his growing knowledge of technology and mana integration, and he knew it would only grow stronger as he advanced.

Committing to the Archery School felt like a mismatch when his true potential might lie elsewhere; perhaps in the Body School, where he could enhance his physical abilities to complement his ownership of the Power Suit. He raised his hand.

"Adrian?"

"Is it possible to attend the class just to improve my shooting skills without learning the martial techniques?" Adrian asked. "I’m not sure the Archery School is the right fit for me."

Sam nodded with an approving expression.

"Of course. The Academy spreads classes across the timetable for a reason; you’re free to attend any you like to build your skills. If you’re not ready to commit to a school, you can still train here to sharpen your aim or learn the basics. No problem with that."

Adrian smiled in relief. "Okay, thank you, sir."

"So, you’re leaning toward another school?"

"Yes," Adrian replied. "I think the Body School might suit me better."

"Fair choice. I’ll teach you both equally, regardless of your path. For now, let’s assess your current skills. Lyra, since you’re committed to the Archery School, we’ll start with you. Both of you, grab a bow and a quiver of arrows from the rack."

Lyra moved quickly to the rack, selecting a recurve bow and a quiver of arrows with the ease of someone who’d done this before.

Adrian followed, picking up a bow that felt awkward in his hands compared to the familiar weight of his gun.

He slung the quiver over his shoulder, the arrows clinking softly as he returned to the mat. Sam positioned them at the edge of the range, about twenty yards from the nearest target.

"Lyra, you first," Sam instructed. "Take three shots at the target. I want to see your raw form."
