Chapter 63 - 63: Pipes and Privacy

Morning light poured through the windows of the town hall. The table was packed again—Elira, Zira, Garin, Dorgrim, and Borin sat around, waiting for Caelen to speak.

He stood at the front, rubbing the back of his neck.

"So... I've got another idea," he said.

Zira raised an eyebrow. "Another invention?"

"Yes. This one's important." Caelen leaned forward. "I want to build toilets. For everyone."

The room went quiet.

Elira blinked. "Toi...lets?"

"Wait—like, those things you sit on?" Garin asked.

Caelen nodded. "Yes. No more going in the bushes, no more digging holes behind your house. We'll build real bathrooms. One for every home. And we'll connect them all with a pipe system that takes the waste far away from the village."

Dorgrim scratched his beard. "Sounds fancy. But why now?"

Caelen sighed. "Because I can't take it anymore. We all share one bathroom near the farm, and I don't know who keeps missing the hole, but I've had enough."

Zira tried to hold in her laugh and failed. "You're serious about this?"

"I'm very serious," Caelen said. "We're building toilets."

Borin nodded. "I'm in. I miss having privacy."

Elira raised a hand. "I'll help dig."

Garin grinned. "This might be the weirdest village project yet. Let's do it."

The digging started that afternoon.

Caelen summoned three golems. Two helped dig trenches behind every house. The third helped Dorgrim collect iron from the mines. Caelen used his Transmute skill to melt and shape the iron into long, hollow pipes. He connected them piece by piece, forming a long chain underground.

It took hours.

Some houses needed to be shifted slightly. Others had no space, so small bathrooms had to be added to the sides. Caelen made simple stone toilet seats, shaped for comfort, and taught Garin how to clean them with soap and hot water.

Zira followed the trench lines, helping Caelen place and seal each pipe.

"I didn't think I'd be laying poop pipes today," she said, brushing her hands off.

Caelen smiled. "You didn't think I'd invent the phone either, and yet... here we are."

"True."

They shared a look. Zira's eyes lingered on him for a moment before she turned away.

By evening, most of the pipes were done.

Caelen had created a system that sloped downward, leading all the waste out to a far-off pit near the forest edge. He used stone to line the pit and planted trees nearby to help with the smell.

Each house now had a private bathroom. Even the dwarves' forge had one in the back.

Borin tested it first.

He sat down on the stone seat, came back out a minute later, and gave a thumbs up. "Best seat in the village."

Dorgrim stepped in next. "My turn. Don't judge."

Caelen watched the system work with a strange sense of pride. It wasn't exciting like a sword or as magical as earth shaping—but it felt real.

It felt human.

Elira walked over, brushing dirt off her dress. "This... was a good idea. I haven't had my own toilet in years."

Garin nodded. "We're truly living like nobles now."

Caelen grinned. "Just wait until I invent showers."

Zira groaned. "Oh no. Not more water inventions."

"Too late," Caelen said with a wink.

Later that night, the village was quiet again.

A soft breeze moved through the clean paths between homes. The trench lines had been filled, the pipes hidden underground. The work was done.

Caelen sat alone behind his house, watching steam rise from his tea.

He looked at his hands. Just weeks ago, he was alone, scared, trying to survive. Now he was making plumbing systems and phones.

He heard soft footsteps.

Zira walked over and sat beside him without a word.

She looked at the stars, then at him. "You know... you've changed this village."

Caelen shrugged. "Just trying to make it better."

"You did," she said, voice low. "Bit by bit. You gave us comfort. Safety. Food. Hope."

He didn't say anything. He just sipped his tea.

Zira added, "And now... our own bathrooms."

He chuckled. "Hey, that's important."

"It is."

They sat in silence for a while.

Then Zira leaned her shoulder against his, just slightly.

"Thank you," she said softly. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

He didn't move. "You're welcome."
