Reborn as Mr.CEO's Fat Wife-Chapter 825: Could it be that Your Husband is Lawyer Jones?
Chapter 825: Chapter 825: Could it be that Your Husband is Lawyer Jones?
The atmosphere in the elevator was awkward.
Catherine Ford tried her best to minimize her presence and heard another female colleague lightly exclaim with some envy, "Anna, did you buy a car?"
"Ah, you found out. It’s just my dad, he thinks I’m too tired commuting to work, so he bought me a car for running errands." Though she said this, her expression was very pleased.
"Who are you kidding? Your dad loves you so much, come on, what did he buy? I must hitch a ride sometime." the female colleague pressed.
"Just an Audi A6, only about six hundred thousand. My dad said once I’m used to it, he’ll get a better one." She finished with a hint of regret.
Her colleague couldn’t help exclaiming, "Six hundred thousand and that’s considered cheap? We really don’t understand the world of the rich."
Catherine thought to herself, exactly.
The two were still muttering about something, and as the elevator doors opened and Catherine was about to leave, the female designer called Anna suddenly glanced at her, looking down from above and said, "You’re from the logistics department, right? Go upstairs and help me carry something."
"Sorry, I’m not responsible for that." Catherine smiled, turned around, and left.
"Are logistics staff so arrogant now? Always making excuses for everything, do they think they are lords?" Anna complained bitterly, obviously displeased with Catherine.
The female colleague next to her sympathized for a while, then found it odd, "Anna, why bother arguing with those types of people?"
"It’s just bad luck that I have to share a name with her, and she looks so poor. Did you just notice, she even wore the same style of shoes I did." Towards the end, Anna seemed deeply offended.
"Aren’t those shoes of yours worth over ten thousand? I saw her before, she seems to come from an average family background, those shoes she wore must be fake."
"That’s what I think too." Anna replied scornfully, and then the two left the elevator and entered the design department.
Catherine didn’t know about these conversations; she had just entered the office and was barely seated when her director called her over. With the year-end approaching, every department was busy, especially the logistics department.
"Catherine, there’s only a month to the company’s annual party, do you have any thoughts?" Manager Howell looked at Catherine seriously.
"Margaret, won’t it be the same as last year?" Catherine, who had been following Margaret Howell since she started at the company, directly asked when she heard this.
"Every year it’s the same old stuff, the higher-ups are dissatisfied, this year they want our logistics department to come up with something new. You’re young and should understand the young crowd better, I’m planning to put you in charge of this event." Margaret looked at Catherine earnestly.
Catherine was taken aback, "Margaret, I can’t do it, I’m just a logistics officer."
"Don’t be so defeatist; you haven’t even tried yet. You’ve also organized quite a few events over these past years under me. How would you know if you don’t try? Besides, do you really plan to stay in this position forever, didn’t you want to switch to finance?" Margaret chided Catherine, continuing in a heartfelt tone.
Catherine’s eyes lit up, "Margaret..."
"Don’t get too excited, I didn’t promise anything. Transferring from logistics to finance isn’t easy, but if you do well this time, since Rex will retire within the year, you could aim for his position." Margaret changed the topic and looked at Catherine with a smile.
Catherine had heard about Rex’s impending retirement, but didn’t expect Margaret to be so straightforward about it today. Purchasing was the most lucrative position in logistics, and many were vying for it. With her age and experience just average, aiming for it seemed far-fetched, but with Margaret implicating so much, she naturally didn’t dare to slack off and nodded, "Margaret, I’ll do my best."
"Hmm, go on then, make a plan as soon as possible, you’ll need cooperation from other departments, everyone will be busy." Margaret waved her away.
Out of Manager Howell’s office, Catherine got busy right away.
The annual party is a major event for the company, with logistics being the busiest, from large tasks like venue decoration, managing department performances, and security, to smaller details like tables and meals, all needing to be arranged and coordinated by the logistics department.
In the past, each department would perform, then there would be a raffle by the boss, but this year they wanted a fresh idea, and Catherine sat at her desk, staring at the computer and pulling her hair out.
A colleague nearby couldn’t stand to watch, "Catherine, if you keep pulling your hair out, you’ll go bald!"
Catherine then realized she had been pulling on her hair and laughed somewhat embarrassedly, "I’m just overwhelmed, the annual party is so bothersome."
"It’s literally killing me, and now they want creativity, I think it’s just the higher-ups making things difficult for us in logistics." Colleague Lewis Tsukkomi.
"What kind of creativity should we have for this year’s party?" Catherine didn’t respond directly, but rested her chin on her hands and worried.
The newly hired Grace Clarke leaned over, "Catherine, why don’t you collect some ideas on the company forum, see what everyone thinks."
Colleague Lewis agreed, "Grace has a good idea."
Catherine also nodded, "Okay, I’ll give it a try."
No sooner said than done, Catherine quickly posted on the company forum to gather opinions. When she finished her afternoon work, she found that there were hundreds of replies, and the proposal with the most likes was surprisingly a masquerade ball.
But calling it a masquerade ball isn’t quite right, as a mixer is more accurate.
Clearly, everyone wanted to use this great opportunity of the annual party to let the young singles from various departments mingle with each other, perhaps even sparking some romances.
Unlike other companies, LG, focusing on film and video game development, does not have strict rules about office romance like state-owned enterprises and banks. With most departments staffed by young people, this dance proposal was widely supported.
Catherine thought it was a good idea too, and sent the proposal to Margaret, who then reported it to the senior management. By the time she was about to leave work in the evening, she got a response agreeing to it.
And it brought another piece of good news. The neighboring law firm heard about their annual party proposal, and decided to have all their employees attend as well.
Once the news broke out, all of LG’s departments were buzzing, especially among the female colleagues.
Working in the same building and being LG’s legal advisor, Benjamin Jones was undoubtedly famous. Moreover, being single, he was nearly every unmarried girl’s object of affection in the company. With all employees from the neighboring law firm attending LG’s masquerade ball, did that mean Benjamin Jones would also attend?
Everyone was excited, and from then on, everyone discussed it non-stop, all looking forward to the company’s annual party for the first time.
Compared to other parts, the logistics department wasn’t as excited, as having the neighboring law firm participate meant a lot more work for them.
Catherine was among those most burdened, busy all day at the company and still thinking of ways to cook dinner for Benjamin Jones when returning home at night.
Fortunately, Benjamin is really easy to take care of.
After a week, Catherine found that whatever she made, the guy would eat, and although not finishing the plates completely, he ate almost all of it every time. This inexplicably gave her a sense of achievement; despite being tired every day, she was happy.
On Friday, she finally finalized the planning and procedures for the annual meeting and handed them over to Margaret, preparing to leave work. Suddenly, she thought of something, took out her phone and hesitated before sending a message to the man nicknamed C, "Lawyer Jones, I’m getting off work early tonight. Is there anything special you’d like to eat tonight?"
After sending it, she didn’t wait and immediately packed her things and left the logistics department. Coincidentally, as soon as she entered the elevator, she saw Anna Ford. The moment Anna saw her, her face showed disdain. Sensing the situation, Catherine decided not to enter, but Grace Clarke who followed behind her pulled her in saying, "Catherine, what are you spacing out for? You can still enter."
Catherine gave an awkward smile, stood aside, pretending to be an invisible person, but Grace, unaware of the weird atmosphere, enthusiastically discussed the annual meeting with Catherine. Catherine could only occasionally respond. At this point, other colleagues from different departments joined their conversation, and one female colleague even excitedly asked, "Is Lawyer Jones really going to attend the dance? Oh my, if I could get paired with Lawyer Jones that day, that would be great!"
"I wish, I wish." Grace chimed in, and even nudged Catherine, "Catherine, you’re responsible for distributing the masks, could you give me a heads up on what mask Lawyer Jones will wear?"
"Really? Tell me too, tell me too," another female colleague exclaimed.
Catherine helplessly said, "Lawyer Jones is quite busy, it’s not confirmed whether he’ll attend or not, and also, there will be a high rate of mask duplicates, so even if I tell you, you might not encounter Lawyer Jones."
"Then the chances would still be better. I’ll add you on Facebook," insisted the female colleague, and then other male colleagues from various departments also took the opportunity to ask for Catherine’s Facebook. Suddenly everyone was surrounding Catherine, while the usually sought-after Anna Ford was being ignored.
Anna, unaccustomed to such treatment, immediately turned sour in her expression and abruptly said, "Aren’t you taking advantage of your power for personal interests?"
The others were stunned, not expecting such a minor issue to be taken so seriously.
Especially Catherine, who felt extremely embarrassed but was at a loss for words. It was Grace who couldn’t stand by, "Aren’t you taking things too far with that accusation? Everyone’s just gossiping, you don’t need to make it sound so serious, making it seem like you have something against Lawyer Jones."
Grace knew Anna well; every time they went to the design department, Anna was the one who had the most to say, almost like treating the logistics team as servants.
Moreover, she had heard that Anna was determined to win over Lawyer Jones, waiting each day in the parking lot to ’accidentally’ meet Lawyer Jones.
"I like Lawyer Jones, but I have the means to do so, what about you?" Anna came from a well-off family, looked good, and was capable at her job, she indeed had reasons to be proud. But after she said this, the female colleague beside her also looked uncomfortable, and the male colleagues were embarrassed.
The whole elevator became weirdly silent because of Anna’s words, and amidst this silence, Catherine’s phone suddenly rang loudly. She nervously picked it up with a laugh but accidentally put it on speaker, only to hear the man on the other end speaking in a deep, melodious voice like a cello, "I have an engagement later, I’ll be home late, you and Alice eat first, no need to save dinner for me."
It was incredibly silent; almost everyone’s breathing could be heard.
Catherine’s mouth agape, looked around at everyone, while everyone was staring at her. From the other end of the phone, Benjamin, waiting for a response from Catherine, asked, "Hmm?"
Seductive enough to melt someone.
"Okay." Finally regaining her senses, Catherine quickly hung up the phone and then turned to everyone with an embarrassed smile.
Grace finally found her voice, "Catherine, your husband’s voice sounds so much like Lawyer Jones, my ears are getting pregnant, look I even got goosebumps!"
"Me too, me too!" Another female colleague from a different department agreed.
One of the male colleagues furrowed his brow, "Could that possibly be Lawyer Jones’ voice?"
Catherine Ford, holding her phone, clenched her hand tightly and shook her head, "How could it be, it just sounds a bit similar, haha."
What Benjamin Jones just said was too misleading; she couldn’t explain it and could only play dumb.
Fortunately, Grace Clarke nodded, "Right, how could Catherine’s husband be Lawyer Jones, and since when has Lawyer Jones’ voice been so gentle?"
Benjamin Jones is the legal advisor for LG and had conducted legal training for everyone in the company before, so everyone was somewhat familiar with his voice.
Although Catherine couldn’t figure out where Benjamin’s voice was gentle just now, she still nodded in agreement.
The others looked at Catherine; although she was fair and beautiful, her demeanor was too meek, exuding a cheapness. Coming from a village with an average family background, how could someone like her catch Lawyer Jones’ eye?
So, after a moment of surprise, everyone found their prior thoughts amusing.
Just then, the elevator dinged upon arrival, Catherine sighed quietly in relief, quickly pulling Grace Clarke out of the elevator. Only Anna Ford stood behind them, looking straight at Catherine’s back. Others might not recognize Benjamin’s voice, but for someone she was pursuing by all means, how could she not recognize his voice, especially since Benjamin was at an engagement today, and that engagement was with her dad.
This was too much of a coincidence!
Anna Ford, with a trace of anger in her eyes, stepped out of the elevator and dialed a number on her phone, "Look up if Lawyer Jones is married for me, will you?"
She quickly received a response, Anna exhaled a breath of relief, but if he’s not married, what is the relationship between that destitute ghost and Lawyer Jones? Or was she mistaken?
Somehow, Anna started thinking about the pair of shoes she and Catherine had that were the same style, last Monday...
Catherine, walking ahead, was oblivious to how much Anna had thought. She was already struggling to handle Grace Clarke’s interrogation.
"Are you not going to tell us, who is your man? His voice is so nice, why don’t you bring him out to meet us sometime?" As they left the company, Grace Clarke could no longer keep her voice down, startling Catherine who hurriedly covered her mouth.
But this made Grace more triumphant, "Oh come on, it’s just a man! I’m not stealing him, unless your husband really is Lawyer Jones?"
Saying that, Grace Clarke widened her eyes, her expression clearly saying, ’tell me I’ve guessed right.’
Catherine was about to explain when a familiar car drove past her, its window wide open. The man inside, sitting upright in his seat, glanced at her briefly.
Bang!
In an instant, Catherine’s face turned red to her ears, almost sure the man had heard her; embarrassed, she wished she could hide in a mouse hole. Grace Clarke, who evidently also saw, stared as Benjamin’s car drove past, then sighed admiringly, "So handsome!"
Then, looking up and seeing Catherine’s flushed cheeks, she was somewhat taken aback, "You can’t be serious? I was just kidding. Lawyer Jones is like flowers on a high ridge, not suited for us mere mortals."
Catherine gave a sheepish smile, her mind racing with how she should explain!
