Chapter 42 -42 Pain and Repayment

After finishing speaking, she hung up the phone. Just those few sentences cost three copper coins—quite the sting.

Luo Qiao knew those two were fine, and after the call she didn’t return to the health clinic. She believed Zhang Xiao’s father would arrive shortly anyway, and she was aware that there was a military unit stationed not far from there.

Zhang Xiao’s father could very well be an officer, given that he personally answered the call. The office must have had a telephone, and it was unlikely that an operator would be on the line.

The little detour meant she got home late. After taking some ready-made food out of her space, Luo Qiao boiled a pot of water while eating, in the courtyard kitchen.

When she had finished her meal, the water was ready. Taking a short rest, she filled a bamboo container with water before finally heading out to work.

Now that her schooling issue was resolved, Luo Qiao felt exceptionally happy, so she went to work that afternoon with a spring in her step.

Since she hadn’t worked in the morning, Luo Qiao went to the team leader to get assigned work. Li Erya, who cut grass, had twisted her ankle the day before, and now they were short of people for this task, so the team leader asked Luo Qiao to join the grass-cutting in the afternoon.

The team leader casually inquired, “Did you get your matter taken care of?”

Luo Qiao answered with a smile, “Yes, I won’t need to attend classes for the next few months. I just have to go in for exams, and my homeroom teacher will have a classmate notify me in advance.”

The team leader replied with a laugh, “That’s good to hear. You can make something of yourself by studying.”

The team leader thought to himself that whether she could get into high school was another matter. At least with a junior high diploma, she’d have some security for the future. Nodding his head and smiling, he left.

Luo Qiao arrived at the animal husbandry yard, collected a sickle and a carry-basket, and then joined Auntie Zhang from her team to head up the mountain.

Auntie Zhang said, “We need to cut three baskets of grass this afternoon to get three work points. Each basket must be packed tightly. Someone always checks when we return.”

They walked uphill for a good while until Auntie Zhang finally pointed out, “We’ll cut in that dip over there—the grass is lush. It’s just a bit of a walk.”

Racing up and down with Auntie Zhang all afternoon, Luo Qiao managed to earn those three work points—it certainly wasn’t easy.

They finished work earlier than those in the fields because once the task was done, they could leave. Back home, Luo Qiao washed up, then lay on the kang bed a while before getting ready to cook.

While cutting grass on the mountain, she had also picked some wild chives. She started by shredding potatoes and mixing them with some flour, sprinkling pepper powder and salt, and stirring well before steaming them in a pot.

She purposely made a little extra, considering the day’s successes with school needed some recognition for Lu Yichen who had helped.

After prepping the wild chives and chopping them finely, she sliced some garlic and made a mashed garlic mix, along with chili sauce.

When the time was right, she took out the cooked dish, heated some oil, and after frying the Sichuan peppercorns, wild chives, and garlic slices to release the aroma, she tossed in the steamed mixture to stir-fry, filling the air with its delicious scent.

Once it was cooked, Luo Qiao served it into a porcelain bowl, placed mashed garlic and chili sauce to one side of the bowl, and then hastened to Lu Yichen’s home.

Lu Yichen had been called away that day to help another team transport sand and stone. He had just come home and finished washing up, preparing to take a break before cooking.

Standing at the gate, Luo Qiao called out, “Brother Lu, are you home?”

Hearing it was Luo Qiao, Lu Yichen replied, “Come in.”

Seeing Luo Qiao with the porcelain bowl, he asked, “What’s this? Did you get your school stuff sorted, and now you’ve come to thank me again?”

Luo Qiao replied playfully, “Yes, Big Brother Lu, you guessed right away! I passed the test and was placed into Class A. I also arranged with the school not to attend daily classes, just to go in for exams.”

Lu Yichen laughed, “Impressive. It seems your grades are good.”
