So what you’re saying is, if we’re only in the vegetable business for one year, we really will just do it for one year and no more.
If this business makes money like this, making a quick buck for just one year wouldn’t be too bad.
“So are you running this vegetable business alone or are you partners with someone?” Mei Yinan asked, since from the conversation earlier, it seemed that Mei Mengzhen would still need to be involved in some way. “If it’s a partnership, Zhenzhen, you’re a high school senior. Do you have the time? Making money is important, but your studies are the most crucial right now. Priorities must be clear.”
Fan Tianyu could tell by Mei Yinan’s tone that there was room for negotiation, “That’s fine, I won’t make Zhenzhen do much; just let her order the stock for me each day, do the bookkeeping, things like that which are really simple. It only takes a few minutes to contact the supplier. Your son understands that Zhenzhen’s focus should be on her schoolwork in her senior year; he wouldn’t be so unreliable.”
Mei Mengzhen nodded, “I’m basically handling logistics. I’ll help out more during the holidays.” Although there weren’t many breaks for a senior high school student, she could always make some time.
Fan Tianyu continued, “I’ve rented a garage nearby and just had somebody clean it up since selling vegetables requires cleanliness. Once the contact here is settled, we can start delivering. I can sell as soon as I get the vegetables. Zhenzhen and I are different, she needs to look after Chenchen so she has to find help, but I don’t need anyone; I can handle it by myself.”
Fan Hongwei felt that there was more to this than meets the eye. Actually, it would’ve been fine to just keep this whole affair quiet, though mentioning it wasn’t much of an issue either. However, there was no need for such formality, which made him realize Fan Tianyu hadn’t reached the main point yet, “What’s the purpose of telling us this, then?”
Fan Hongwei scratched his head, grinning sheepishly, “I’m hoping to make more trips, you see, but I can’t carry much if I only use a trailer from home to the front of the vegetable market. So, I’m thinking of buying a van, nothing too expensive; a Wuling or a Jinbei will do, just to haul goods. But I’m short on cash right now, so I was wondering if I could borrow some from you. Three months, I will definitely pay it back in three months.”
If they were asking for money, the husband and wife could have unleashed another round of anger, but since it was a loan, there was no need. Mei Yinan said, “Borrowing money isn’t out of the question, but write an IOU.”
“Come on, Mom, I’m your own son; do we really need to go through all that?”
“We do, it’s necessary. If you can’t pay it back in three months, interest will increase each month until it’s paid. Otherwise, no loan,” Mei Yinan’s condition was rather harsh. Upon remembering the little money that could be made by selling vegetables by hand, Fan Tianyu clenched his teeth, resolved to go through with it, “I’ll borrow it. When can you give me the money? Today would be best. I’ll go buy the van right now, and then I can start working the day after tomorrow.”
Fan Hongwei glanced at the time, “What’s this about transferring money? What if you don’t have enough for the purchase? Go straight to buy the van. Just write the IOU for the amount you end up borrowing. Why wait for tomorrow? We can go right now. I have to work tomorrow anyway.”
Fan Tianyu didn’t expect his father to be so proactive, “Sure, that’s fine by me.”
Mei Yinan purse lips, “What’s all this ‘sure’ about? I’m in the middle of making dumplings here.”
Mei Mengzhen said, “Chenchen and I can handle the dumpling making. We still have the whole afternoon.” There would certainly be enough dumplings for several people to eat in the evening.
The three of them looked at Mei Mengzhen and her brother at the same time. Indeed, not so many people were needed for buying a van.
Mei Mengzhen also felt that the family of three probably wanted to have a private chat, so she volunteered to take on the task of making dumplings.
Fan Tianyu immediately caught on and stood up enthusiastically, “Okay, Mom, let’s go.”
Mei Yinan still didn’t look too pleased but got dragged out of the house by Fan Tianyu nonetheless.
Mei Mengchen watched the three leaving and then turned to Mei Mengzhen, “Sister, is Auntie Mengzhen upset about selling vegetables?”
“Auntie Mengzhen being upset doesn’t change anything. If Brother Tianyu decides to do it, she can’t stop him,” Mei Mengzhen stated the truth. The garage had already been rented, and money had been made before; she really didn’t believe Fan Tianyu would give up such a money-making opportunity. Nevertheless, Chenchen’s reaction to Mei Yinan confused her a bit. Although the boy wasn’t particularly fond of Mei Yinan, he had never been this cold to her before, “What’s wrong, Chenchen? It seems like you’re not happy to see Auntie Mengzhen.”
Mei Mengchen pouted, exhaling heavily through his flaring nostrils as if he indeed was quite upset about something.
“What happened, who made my Chenchen unhappy?”
Only then did Mei Mengchen speak, “Auntie Mengzhen, Auntie Mengzhen talked bad about Sister, and Chenchen is unhappy.”
“Hmm, when did this happen, and how did you come to know about it?” Mei Mengzhen was somewhat surprised. It was strange that such things would be discussed in front of Chenchen.
“It was that day when Auntie Mengzhen and Brother Tianyu took Chenchen to school. They said Chenchen’s clothes were too small and Sister wouldn’t buy new ones for him. Brother Tianyu even got angry and scolded Auntie Mengzhen when he heard that.”
Mei Mengchen had a sharp memory, remembering it very clearly despite some time having passed.
“Silly boy, Auntie Mengzhen was using her own way to express concern for you, they’re kind to you, and here you are being upset with them.” Just as she had previously mentioned, Mei Yinan occasionally made similar remarks in front of her. Since she had never gone too far, Mengzhen hadn’t given it much thought. She actually found it manageable since, in her past life, she had been greatly helped by Auntie Mengzhen. In the previous year of her high school, she had lived with her aunt for an entire year. This fact held true in this life too. Therefore, she didn’t take these small issues to heart, although she was somewhat surprised that Brother Tianyu actually stood up for her.
Chenchen certainly wasn’t cheered up by the explanation, “But Auntie Mengzhen doesn’t like Sister, and Sister is so good to me.”
“There’s nothing to be upset about. If Auntie Mengzhen treats Chenchen well, Sister would be happy. All Sister wants is for Chenchen to grow up safe and sound, so I don’t care about these things. But it’s true that Auntie Mengzhen cares for Chenchen, and you shouldn’t dislike Auntie Mengzhen just because of Sister.”
“I don’t dislike her, I’m just upset.”
“What’s there to be upset about? And you’re pretty patient, huh? Auntie Mengzhen only took you to school on the first day of term, right? It’s been three weeks since school started, and we chat every day, yet you haven’t mentioned a single word about it. How did you hold it in for so long?”
Mei Mengchen replied matter-of-factly, “I didn’t want Sister to be upset by hearing about it. It’s okay for Chenchen to be upset alone; I don’t want Sister to be, too.”
Mei Mengzhen hugged her brother close and kissed his forehead, “My Chenchen is so considerate, holding it in because you’re worried it would make Sister unhappy. But keeping things to yourself can be harmful, you know. If something bothers you in the future, will you tell Sister, okay?”
Chenchen felt conflicted; he already shared happy moments with her every day. Did he really have to share the troubling ones too? He just wanted to share the happy moments. Nevertheless, seeing the expectant look in his sister’s eyes, Chenchen couldn’t say no, “Okay, I’ll tell Sister everything from now on.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere.
After bringing his parents home, Fan Tianyu grabbed his card and headed for the bus station. Neither of his parents’ workplaces was far away — Fan Hongwei could get to his by bicycle, and Mei Yinan could simply walk, which is why the Fan Family had never needed a car before.
The three of them got off the bus and went straight into the car dealership.
This whole area was filled with car dealerships, but they focused mainly on vans and small trucks, which was exactly what Fan Tianyu was looking for. The prices wouldn’t be too high, which he wouldn’t mind. Even if the vehicle ended up getting beaten up, it wouldn’t be a big deal. It was perfectly suitable for selling vegetables.
