Chapter 29 -29: Cooking on a small stove?

Fan Tianyu glanced over, “What are we waiting for, I’m going to wash and cut one to taste right now.”

One apple was divided among several people, so everyone just got a piece to taste. Could it be too much, or what? Fan Tianyu said this and grabbed an apple from the bag, hurried to the kitchen, and after a flurry of rubbing and slicing, brought it out. Mei Yinan doubted the apple was properly washed due to the speed, “Did you wash it?”

Fan Tianyu didn’t quite understand the question, “Of course, isn’t it wet on top?”

“You washed an apple that quickly, do you think it’s clean?”

Fan Tianyu didn’t mind, “A bit of dirt never killed anyone, eating an apple isn’t that big of a deal.”

The apple slices were ready, divided per person. Everybody stuffed the pieces into their mouths, and wow, the taste instantly wowed everyone’s taste buds.

Fan Tianyu exclaimed excitedly, “My gosh, this apple is so delicious.”

Fan Tianhua also chimed in, “Yeah, it tastes so good, I’ve never eaten an apple this delicious before.”

Even Uncle Fan Hongwei nodded in agreement, “Ten yuan each is worth it.”

The value was undeniable, but expensive nonetheless. It was the kids who didn’t understand the value of money who had bought them. If it were him, he would never have made the purchase.

Mei Yinan thought the apple tasted very yummy and also somewhat familiar, “Where did you buy this apple?”

“Just at the Vegetable Market up front. I heard grandpa mention that the vegetables there are fresh and cheaper than here. That’s why these past few days I’ve been going there to buy our veggies, right behind the small grocery store there.”

There was nothing wrong with disclosing this since she wasn’t planning to set up a stall there anytime soon, so even if they did go, they wouldn’t find anyone.

Speaking of the Vegetable Market up front, Uncle seemed to be aware of some news, “I’ve been hearing from colleagues in the Office lately about a new vendor at the market nearby. I heard their vegetables are expensive but taste exceptionally good, each day they’re sold out quickly. They don’t just sell vegetables, but also apples, seemingly similar to the one you have. I’ve been too busy to check it out, but as today is my day off, I was actually planning to go and take a look.”

Mei Mengzhen felt a bit guilty upon hearing this, “Yes, that’s the one, right behind the alley, outside the small grocery store. They sell their vegetables individually, five or ten yuan each, but they’re quite large.”

Understanding the implication, Mei Yinan got the point, “Have you been eating their vegetables these past few days?”

Mei Mengzhen explained, “Yes, their vegetables are quite large. The price difference isn’t much compared to others. At other stalls, two tomatoes cost about 3-4 yuan, but at their stall, one tomato is 5 yuan, yet it’s as big as two from others, so the price is fairly equivalent, not expensive.”

Having said that, Mei Mengzhen playfully winked at her brother. Mei Mengchen also pursed his lips, barely holding back a smile, his eyes gleaming with mischief.

She really had done her research on this matter, and her detailed explanation was mainly to prevent being accused by Auntie of spending money carelessly.

Though Auntie felt the pinch, she had been buying groceries for half her life. She knew the cost of different vegetables. She did the math and indeed, the prices were comparable; if they seemed expensive, it wasn’t by much, which is why people were still willing to buy from them.

The apple discussion winding down, Mei Mengzhen’s gaze drifted toward the kitchen. When she had arrived, Auntie mentioned that she was boiling noodles, and it had been quite a while since she came in, “Auntie, are the noodles ready?”

Auntie was suddenly startled, “Oh dear, I forgot about the noodles still boiling in the pot.”

Auntie moved quickly to the kitchen, but it was too late, the noodles were overcooked. While serving the noodles, she complained that Fan Tianyu shouldn’t have washed and eaten an apple at this time, causing breakfast to end up like this.

Fan Tianyu felt wronged, but what could he do? Any objection might result in Auntie picking up a kitchen utensil on the spot.

Listening to Auntie’s nagging, everyone shut their mouths tightly until the noodles were served, and then they began to speak again.

However, the noodles were overcooked. If the noodles were on Auntie’s children, they might still bear with it and eat, but for Mei Mengchen, it was a bit too much to endure.

Eating delicious food from Mei Mengzhen’s space every day and then comparing it to the outside food, the difference was significant. Moreover, regularly decent food, now mushy like this, even a sharp-minded three-year-old would find it hard to bear, and his displeasure was clearly written all over his face.

Mei Mengchen grimaced as he pushed noodles into his mouth, but anybody could tell from his facial expression that the noodles were awful.

While seated next to him, Fan Tianyu barely kept his laughter in check because Mei Yinan had also noticed Chenchen’s little expression but was trying so hard to be polite and not to mention it.

Mei Yinan could restrain herself, but Fan Tianyu couldn’t. He noticed not only Mei Mengchen’s little expressions but also his mother’s.

Seizing the moment, Fan Tianyu looked at Mei Mengchen and asked, “Chenchen, are the noodles tasty?”

As he spoke, everyone’s chopsticks paused, and they looked at him with ambiguous glances.

Was he just looking for trouble? Whether the noodles were tasty or not, it was clear they were awful.

At that moment, Fan Tianyu still hadn’t realized anything amiss, but as sensitive as Chenchen, he sensed something was off with the atmosphere at the table. After thinking for a moment, he said, “The noodles taste good, they’re just mushy.”

Mei Mengchen’s verdict was neither good nor bad, stating the fact which wasn’t too unpleasant to accept.

Fan Tianyu was somewhat incredulous. Such a young child was so articulate. He blurted out, “How is that possible?” He then wondered whether they were eating the same bowl of noodles. Did his mother give his little cousin some special treatment?

Just then, Auntie’s chopsticks landed accurately on Fan Tianyu’s head, “If you don’t want to eat, then don’t. If you don’t finish lunch, you’re not eating dinner either. If it wasn’t for you, would the noodles be overcooked?”

“How could this be my fault, what did I do? I just cut an apple,” Fan Tianyu defended himself, disbelief in his voice.

But Auntie wasn’t listening, already full of anger and now finding a target to unload on, “If not you, then who? A perfectly good breakfast of noodles and you have to eat an apple. Knowing I was cooking, couldn’t you have eaten the apple after the meal?”

Well, Auntie got to vent, but Fan Tianyu was left stewing in his frustration. Not only that, because he had offended Auntie, he was now assigned the task of washing dishes in the morning.

After Uncle and Auntie left to buy groceries, the siblings shifted from the dining table to the couch, watching Fan Tianyu washing dishes in the kitchen.

Fan Tianhua, who had just finished wiping the table, joined her on the couch, starting a casual chat.

In the family, Mei Mengzhen got along quite well with the children from both Auntie’s and second aunt’s homes.

Fan Tianhua mocked his brother washing dishes, “Not one bit of tact, thinking he can offend Mom with impunity? It’s good that she blew up now, or else he’d have a tough time at lunch.”
