Chapter 91: Chapter 91 Analysis

"Ah?!" Mai Qiqi was greatly shocked.

The school term had just begun, and this was one of the top universities in the country, yet a despicable act of theft had occurred in the dormitory; she could hardly believe it and asked incredulously:

"Are you sure? Look again, could you have remembered the place wrong?"

Wan Chu’er accepted Mai Qiqi’s kind suggestion and searched through the drawer again. All the other items were in a mess but were present, except for the Tiger Roar Jade.

She nodded again and said, "I am certain, and the placement of my things was not like this before. A jade pendant wrapped in paper is missing."

Mai Qiqi widened her eyes, glanced at Wan Chu’er’s messy drawer, then at her tidy upper bunk, feeling that things might indeed be true.

"Did a thief come into our dormitory? I don’t know if my things are missing; I’ll check as well," Mai Qiqi said.

At that moment, the dormitory door opened and Lin Yufei walked in, looking very shocked as she heard a couple of sentences at the door.

"Our dorm was burgled? Whose things are missing?"

Mai Qiqi told Lin Yufei about Wan Chu’er losing her belongings, then said, "You arrived just in time; check if you’ve lost anything too."

Lin Yufei and Mai Qiqi checked their possessions.

"My things seem untouched, and I don’t find anything missing," Lin Yufei said first, then sighed in relief.

"I didn’t touch my belongings either, and there was even two hundred yuan in my drawer, which hasn’t been lost," Mai Qiqi raised the Walkman from her bed and said.

Lin Yufei’s eyes widened in surprise and exclaimed, "You casually left two hundred yuan in the drawer!"

That really was careless, considering two hundred yuan wasn’t a small amount!

Mai Qiqi shrugged, looked towards Wan Chu’er, it seemed that only Wan Chu’er’s belongings had been tampered with, and a jade pendant was missing.

Lin Yufei withdrew her gaze from the unconcerned Mai Qiqi and thought to herself how wealthy Mai Qiqi’s family must be, then said,

"Remember, we all left together last Friday afternoon, and I didn’t come back during that time. Are there any signs of forced entry on our doors or windows?"

She first cleared herself of suspicion, although not believing that the pendant Wan Chu’er lost was particularly valuable.

Wan Chu’er shook her head, saying, "I just checked all the doors and windows, there are no signs of them being tampered with, the windows were properly closed, and it’s not easy to climb up to the fourth floor."

This also ruled out the possibility of an outside thief committing the crime.

Mai Qiqi calmly said, "I didn’t come back in between either."

Wan Chu’er also shook her head, "Neither did I."

The three exchanged glances, then simultaneously turned their eyes to Ma Tianjiao’s bed, all thinking of Ma Tianjiao.

Lin Yufei curled her lips, remarking, "Looks like it was Ma Tianjiao, she was the last to leave that day, she definitely had to come back to get something.

It’s true what they say, you never really know someone. She always boasts about how rich her family is, acting superior all the time, but turns out to be shallow, even taking things from a dorm mate. I need to keep an eye on my belongings in the future."

Wan Chu’er lowered her eyelids, she too suspected Ma Tianjiao.

The mess on the desk and in the drawer suggested someone had rifled through everything. Wan Chu’er’s pupils contracted, she walked towards Mai Qiqi’s bed, then crouched down, bending over to pull out something from beneath the bed.

"My sunscreen."

Wan Chu’er was holding her sunscreen, which Mai Qiqi and Lin Yufei both recognized, as Wan Chu’er had been using it during military training.

Mai Qiqi also looked around, and then found a pen on the ground, "Is this yours, Chuchu?"

It was the pen Jiang Kechu had given her, and Wan Chu’er nodded and took it.

Lin Yufei’s eyes shifted, and with a clap and a laugh, she said: "It must have been Ma Tianjiao lashing out at Wan Chu’er’s desk that day, sweeping everything off Wan Chu’er’s desk onto the floor, and then, seeing the opportunity, she took the most valuable jade from inside."

Although she didn’t see it herself, Lin Yufei had somehow deduced almost accurately.

"What are you going to do?" Mai Qiqi asked Wan Chu’er, concerned.

Before Wan Chu’er could say anything, Lin Yufei’s eyes lit up, interjecting: "Chuchu, beat up Ma Tianjiao, make her hand over the stuff, just like that day when you kicked the chair."

That kick from Wan Chu’er had been so cool, it left a deep impression on Lin Yufei.

Mai Qiqi couldn’t help but laugh, "Yu Fei, you really love stirring up trouble."

Wan Chu’er also smiled slightly, then said seriously: "I want to tell the counselor first, try to solve this internally through the counselor, and if that doesn’t work, then we’ll call the police."

"Ah? Call the police?" Lin Yufei exclaimed, eyes wide, "Is it that serious?"

Mai Qiqi thought for a moment, then asked: "Chuchu, is that jade pendant very important?"

She actually wanted to ask if the jade pendant was very valuable, but she hesitated to say it outloud, worried that maybe the jade pendant only had significant meaning, especially since Wan Chu’er’s lifestyle didn’t seem very affluent.

Wan Chu’er nodded and said, "That was a keepsake my mother left me."

Now nothing else needed to be said; a keepsake from one’s own mother was undoubtedly important, but Mai Qiqi and Lin Yufei were somewhat surprised, not having expected Wan Chu’er to have lost her mother.

Ma Tianjiao came back to the dorm very late, almost at nine o’clock at night.

She had a good time at her uncle’s, happily forgetting to return.

As soon as she opened the door, she noticed something off in the dorm. Apart from Wan Chu’er and the other two, the counselor was also there, all four of them looking at her with grave expressions, and there was a hint of disdain in Lin Yufei’s eyes.

Ma Tianjiao immediately remembered the jade pendant, and subconsciously raised the bag in her hand higher, pressing it against her chest where the jade pendant jabbed her.

"Hello counselor, why... why are you all looking at me like that?" Ma Tianjiao’s tone carried a hint of guilt.

The counselor, a young woman in her mid-twenties, nodded calmly and said, "Why are you coming back so late?"

Ma Tianjiao casually tossed her stuff onto the bed, replying, "It’s not late, it’s not even nine yet, our school doesn’t have a rule about what time we must arrive, right?"

Lin Yufei snorted sarcastically and looked at Wan Chu’er, who was quietly sitting on a chair, seemingly lost in thought.

"Counselor, did you come to our dorm for a reason?" Ma Tianjiao probed.

The counselor said, "Someone in your dorm reported missing items, I came to check on it."

Lin Yufei suddenly interjected, "I lost two hundred yuan, Mai Qiqi lost a necklace, Wan Chu’er lost a jade pendant, Ma Tianjiao, did you take them? After we left that day, only you came back to the dorm, and no one else was here during that time."

Mai Qiqi and Wan Chu’er instantly understood, Lin Yufei was trying to bluff Ma Tianjiao.
