Rebirth: I Am Not the Movie Queen This Time-Chapter 33 Popular
Chapter 33: Chapter 33 Popular
That day, after An Lian taught Wan Chu’er three martial arts movements, he let her practice her strength by continuously kicking her legs in his small courtyard.
Forward kicks, side kicks, backward kicks... Wan Chu’er clenched her teeth and kept kicking for an hour before stopping, sweating profusely.
An Lian opened the can of food and handed her a spoon, telling her to eat.
Wan Chu’er pursed her lips, wasn’t it said that one shouldn’t eat right after intense exercise?
She chuckled softly, then firmly refused An Lian and left with her coat, stealthily placing the red envelope on the windowsill before leaving.
An Lian looked at the open can, somewhat helplessly. With the lid off, there was no way to return it. Thinking of Bai Zhixi mending shoes in the bitterly cold wind, he just couldn’t swallow it.
How many pairs of shoes would Bai Zhixi need to mend for the cost of these two cans, he thought. And decided that on Monday, when Wan Chu’er was at school, he would visit Bai Zhixi at the Wan Family.
Having been previously berated by Wan Chu’er, An Lian had developed a slight psychological shadow, and subconsciously wanted to avoid meeting Wan Chu’er when seeing Bai Zhixi, even though Wan Chu’er had changed a lot and was even learning martial arts from him.
When Wan Chu’er got home, Bai Zhixi had already prepared everything.
Thirty pounds of pickled vegetables packed into two-pound plastic bags, all the bags then placed in a clean plastic bucket.
Bai Zhixi said, "Carrying with a bucket is more convenient and looks clean and hygienic."
Wan Chu’er nodded and went straight to pick up the bucket—it was too heavy to let Bai Zhixi carry after all.
"Hey, let me, let me, you’re still a child, how can you carry it?" Bai Zhixi hastened to stop her.
Wan Chu’er dodged Bai Zhixi, lifting the bucket and turning in a circle, then with a "thud", she slammed the bucket back down.
Too heavy, she couldn’t lift it!
Bai Zhixi couldn’t help but laugh, "Told you, you’re still a child, not fully grown, where would you get the strength to carry this."
But Wan Chu’er didn’t want Bai Zhixi to carry it all by herself. After looking around, she found a stick as thick as her wrist, and the mother-daughter duo carried the bucket out together.
The bucket always tipped more towards Bai Zhixi’s side. As a mother pities her daughter, Wan Chu’er smiled and let her be.
Someday, she would shelter Bai Zhixi under her own wings.
This time, they still went to Wu Family Noodle House first.
Wu Family Noodle House was preparing for their opening, and the lady boss was wiping down tables and chairs. Upon seeing Wan Chu’er and her mother, she immediately put down the cleaning cloth.
She greeted them with a smile, "Oh, you’ve finally come. I’ve been waiting for several days. If you didn’t show up, I was about to post a missing person notice."
Hearing this, Bai Zhixi and Wan Chu’er exchanged a glance, joy apparent in both their eyes.
Bai Zhixi asked with a smile, "Boss, how are the pickles selling?"
"The few pounds of pickles sold out in just three days, and these past couple of days without pickles, the regular customers have been complaining a lot," the lady boss chattered, "Who would have thought your pickles would be so popular? Everyone says that noodles and pickled cucumbers are the perfect match."
Their noodle house had seen an increase in customers these days, many asking for pickled cucumbers right away, but sadly, they had sold out long ago, making the lady boss anxious.
Noodles and pickles are even better together during meals.
Wan Chu’er thought of this slogan and couldn’t help but smile.
The lady boss saw it and asked curiously, "Young lady, what are you laughing at?"
"I didn’t expect the lady boss would notice my laugh," said Wan Chu’er honestly. "It reminded me of a promotional phrase: ’At meal times, noodles and pickles are a perfect match, oh!’"
"That’s a good one!" Boss Wu, who had heard the commotion from the kitchen, came out just in time to hear Wan Chu’er’s remark and couldn’t help but praise her.
The more he thought about it, the more he felt the phrase was simple yet provocative.
Wan Chu’er’s eyes twinkled as she smiled and said, "Boss, why not write this phrase down and put it up in a prominent spot in your restaurant?"
Boss Wu nodded eagerly, "Good idea, I’ll write it now." He was about to rummage through his drawers for a brush and ink.
Seeing this, the lady boss sighed in resignation and said, "You, always in such a hurry. Miss Bai is waiting still, they might have to go to other restaurants. Don’t keep them waiting, hurry up and get the pickles."
"Oh, oh," Boss Wu chuckled and slapped his thigh, apologizing, "Sorry about that. I just got carried away with writing."
Wan Chu’er smiled and replied, "I understand, I understand."
This made Boss Wu burst out laughing, finding the young girl amusing. What could she understand? She was certainly good at making conversation though.
Wu Family Noodle House ordered six jin of pickles this time and agreed to have Bai Zhixi deliver another six jin in five days. They settled the payment on the spot.
Suppressing her excitement, Bai Zhixi left Wu Family Noodle House and couldn’t help saying to Wan Chu’er, "I never expected our pickled cucumbers to be so popular. Now I can finally relax."
Initially, she had just tried her hand at making them, never anticipating such popularity.
Wan Chu’er said, "You should have confidence in your pickles. In my heart, the pickles mom makes are the best in the world."
Bai Zhixi’s face beamed with a smile, saying, "This is something Grandma taught me. At first, I didn’t want to learn, but I’m glad I did, otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to make them for Chuchu."
In her heart, making money was not as important as her daughter loving to eat.
Wan Chu’er couldn’t help but curl the corners of her mouth, feeling a warmth in her heart.
They visited other restaurants one by one. Most had sold out of their pickles and happily purchased a few more jin from them.
But there were some restaurants that still had pickles left.
For those unsold pickles, Wan Chu’er took the initiative to take them back and refunded their money.
She calmly told those restaurant owners, "It seems the customers don’t really like the pickles, so we won’t trouble you any further."
Restaurants that hadn’t sold out of pickles originally didn’t order much, just two to three jin. And they hadn’t sold out in a week’s time.
Wan Chu’er figured either these restaurants didn’t do good business and had few customers, or they resisted recommending the pickles to their patrons.
If they didn’t want to earn money, then she didn’t need to waste her effort on them.
On the road, Bai Zhixi regretted saying, "Chuchu, even though those restaurants haven’t sold all their pickles, if they want another jin or two of fresh ones, we should supply them. A jin or two is still money; we could earn one yuan."
Wan Chu’er shook her head and patiently explained, "These restaurants are not sincerely interested in cooperating on the pickle venture. We are not short of restaurants wanting our pickles, and we have many partnerships already. There’s no need to waste time and effort dealing with them, or they might think they can push us around."
Now that her daughter had a solid plan, Bai Zhixi thought it made sense and followed her advice.
They quickly sold out the thirty jin of pickles they brought and had to make two more trips home. In total, they sold a hundred jin of pickles that day and took back ten jin.
Wan Chu’er threw the returned pickles directly into a roadside garbage bin, which made Bai Zhixi sigh with pity, but she felt even more convinced that not cooperating with those restaurants was the right decision.
This time, County Hotel ordered ten jin of various pickles on the spot and asked Bai Zhixi to deliver every three days.
